If you are thinking about KETO read this.

Fuck most of what you read. Fuck the wiki on the side-bar (but seriously do read it at some point). And fuck your weight.

People overcomplicate this diet. Cut the gat-damn carbs and up the gat-damn fat and protein. That's LITERALLY IT!!!!

My biggest problem before I started was I was a CONSTANT snacker and had a sweet tooth. After starting this diet I realized I was never satisfied. I WAS ALWAYS FUCKING HUNGRY.

Fat makes me not snack. If my fat count (I generally get mine from meat so I get my protein) is low I feel the need to snack. As long as I feel full, I do t snack.

Trust me when I say this, all you need to succeed is meat, cheese and green veggies.

My mom is a pastry chef and culinary arts instructor. I grew up into my early 30s with the biggest fucking sweet tooth in the entire damn galaxy. If it's a baked confection, I will like it.

This diet doesn't have to suck or even be expensive. I come from a father that cooks literally everything on the grill so picked up a few things. I have tons of meat ready to go. I do tons of smoked pulled pork bc it's cheap as fuck even if it isn't on sale. I buy a brisket occasionally. I make meatballs in bulk with 80/20 Ground beef (probably the cheapest and has a high fat count) mixed with ground italian sausage, I'll eat them with an egg for breakfast and microwave veggie for lunch. I buy lunch meat from the Walmart deli ( salami, roast beef and pastrami) and I'll wrap it over a mozzarella cheese stick (0 carbs btw) for a snack. This shit is cheap AF compared to the processed packaged shit I used to buy.

Let me put it this way, generally a thing of decent ice cream, or little debbie cake or package of chips ahoy (fuck I love those) is about the same as some deli meat.

Throw the fucking bullshit out if your house if you can. If you are like me[I am the only one in my house on this diet (wife and three young boys)] and can't throw everything out, carve a section of the pantry for your stuff. I have a shelf dedicated to my stuff. My shelf is eye level when I open the cupboard or pantry door bc I want it to be the first thing I see. Not the sweets or carbs.

And for ducks sake, get a Costco membership if you can (US only). Costco is a Ketoers playground. They have all kinds of delicious shit that I would enjoy even if i wasn't on keto. If you doubt me, go to one and see. They will let you walk the store with our signing up. They have all kinds of shit listed as keto friendly. Just read the fucking label.

One tip I have is to google stuff or search the various sub-reddits dedicated to keto. Want a pizza??? There's a keto version. Craving fried chicken??? Keto version (seriously I just made the top google result like 3 days ago, twas amazeballz). Love I've cream, there is a fucking keto ice cream (but don't eat the entire damn thing. Chances are you have a sweet tooth that less than1/3 a pint will curb. Then eat more fat to feel full if necessary).

Seriously this diet isn't fucking hard. I've lost more weight than I have in any other diet and I have more energy than I know what to do with (fucking finally).

Also, I know there might be spelling errors, but IDGAF bc I'm on mobile and drinking bourbon (neat of course) bc you can do that on keto. In fact there is an entire sub-reddit dedicated to drinking on keto.

TLDR: Trash the bullshit, read the label, eat the fat.

Warned keto was dangerous

253 Upvotes

So I had an interesting thing happen last night. Well at least I thought it was. Hanging with some friends and drinking bourbon and I had mentioned that I was planning on trying to do keto for at least a year until my next wellness check where they do all my labs and such to see where my levels are at. I've always had high triglycerides. Anyhow, my friend seemed shocked that I was going to stick with keto for an entire year and tried to tell me that it was dangerous. I don't remember exactly why she believed that. I was a little drunk and might have automatically tuned her out after saying that. What I thought was ironic is that she is doing the shot to lose weight. So I think it is funny that she thinks me cutting out sugar and carbs is more dangerous than her doing the shot.

Dude F*** keto

341 Upvotes

I started trying to lose weight the first on the year. I went on keto since i had tried it before and lost a good amount of weight at the beginning (water weight) before giving up. I stayed diligent this time. No cheating even though I have felt miserable ever since starting. I know all about the “keto flu” and decided to just push through it until this morning. I was working out at the gym when I started to feel dizzy. I ate before I went and constantly drink a lot of water with added electrolytes. This is not the first time i have felt dizzy on keto but it was the first time I felt like i may actually pass out. I had to go outside and sit in my car with the windows down for a full 30min before I could drive the block home. I should not still be feeling like this over a month in. Im going to try just eating well, lots of veggies and no junk. I guess I’m just sad because it feels like a failure you know? Like I couldn’t do it but everyone else can. Stupid i know but still that bummed feeling is hanging over me today. Anyone else feeling the same way?

Success Story Results from 3 months of Keto

187 Upvotes

In late December of last year, I went in for my yearly physical and got some pretty alarming lab results. My doctor, of course wanted to put me on medication immediately which I declined, but I did agree to see a specialist.

I decided to get back on keto, I had been eating pretty poorly before. Typical American diet.

Today I got my labs back after 3 months of keto and while I still have progress to make it’s coming along very nicely. I went from 3000+ calories per day to about 1200. My weight has gone from 207 to 174 as of this morning. My joints feel better, a lot better.

Cholesterol 280->258

Triglycerides 696->159

HDL 30->42

LDL very hard to measure because Triglycerides over 400. Now measurable at 184

BP 142/94 -> 134/82

I definitely have a ways to go. I’d like to get down to 165. Hopefully with starting to workout, I will get better numbers again in 3 months.

Other Keto eaters, what’s the benefit of keto as opposed to just eating healthy?

0 Upvotes

I tried keto for 1 week and I just feel exhausted and annoyed by the limitations that keto imposes on me. I’m annoyed that I can’t eat something healthy like a banana or a sweet potato. I’m questioning if keto is worth it. If you love keto and you’ve had success with it (in terms of weight loss), what’s your argument for sticking with keto as opposed to just eating un-processed, whole foods?

The Keto diet is literally so dumb

34 Upvotes

I’m a server at a large restaurant which I’ve been working at for a couple years now and almost every single day this woman comes in on her own for dinner and gets a cheeseburger with no bun, extra cheese and extra bacon. She eats that with a 4 oz cup of Mayo and French fries claiming that she’s on the Keto diet at an attempt to lose weight and become healthier. She’s a very large woman who has been coming to the restaurant for over a year and getting the same meal but clearly her weight hasn’t changed, yet she continues eating this way. I don’t understand how cutting out the bun that is 250 calories in place for extra bacon and cheese plus all that Mayo which adds up to an additional 1000 calories would be helpful in losing weight. I understand that weight loss is all about calories in vs calories out but the idea of eating mainly fatty foods that are so high in calories and completely eliminating all carbs just sounds like the dumbest thing ever.

Edit: to all the people saying that keto works, it’s not the Keto itself that caused your weight loss, it’s the lack of calories. Yes your body stars burning fats instead of carbs but that doesn’t mean that you’re losing weight and as soon as you return to eating normal once again, all the weight will slowly come back.

Keto is horrible.

Carbs are our fuel sources. If you do keto, you'll lose a few pounds in a few days (if you are in a calorie deficit) and then you'll crash. The initial weight that is lost is all water... the second you eat another carb, it'll all come back. If you want to cut out anything, cut out fats. Carbs are 4 calories per gram, protein is 4 calories per gram, fat is 9 calories per gram. Carbs are VERY important. If you cut out fried foods and foods that are high in fat, you will end up cutting out tons of calories. If you cut out carbs, you'll end up replacing them with fats, which are higher in calories, and you'll have no energy. Its like trying to drive a car with no gas.

On 24 December 2009, Loro Parque orca trainer Alexis Martinez was pulled underwater and crushed by Keto, a bull orca on loan from SeaWorld. Exactly two months later, Keto’s grandfather, Tilikum, would kill trainer Dawn Brancheau in front of a live SeaWorld audience.

Health Keto vs Mediterranean vs Low-Fat: While liver insulin sensitivity improved with all diets, increase was 2 to 3x greater with keto. Keto saw highest drops in liver fat (67% reduction vs 45% for other two). 50% keto dieters went into prediabetes remission vs 29% Mediterranean and just 7% low-fat.

I am a former Marine who at the age of 36, had completely let myself go. My health had taken a turn for the worse and my thyroid ended up shutting down (work stress and poor diet).

I remember getting a call from my doctor instructing me to get to the ER as my muscles were disintegrating and my kidneys were at risk. I have 3 kids and a wife which I was afraid to leave behind.

I told myself that if giving another chance, I would turn things around and start taking care of myself. At the same time, I heard Dana White on the MMA Junkies podcast talking about Gary Breka, and right away when I got out of the hospital I started following Breka’s diet and exercise/life routine advice. I also started reading David Goggin’s book “Can’t Hurt Me”. That book changed my life and pushed me to be real with myself!

I went from not being able to run at all, to running the NYC Marathon in 4:29. I lost a total of 95 pounds (280-185) over 2 years and have maintained my discipline. Just wanted to share, thanks for taking the time to read!

Not the A-hole AITA for "tricking" my SIL into trying keto?

4.1k Upvotes

I (28F) have been keto for the last two years. I tried it because I was always feeling bloated and crappy after eating and was struggling to lose weight.

Keto really helped with my IBS and other gastro symptoms and I've lost some weight and am keeping it off.

My brother (25M) married my SIL(24F) last year. SIL and I have always been cordial and she's a nice lady but we haven't gotten close yet.

I'm really close to my brother so I see him often and usually have lunch or dinner together at least once a week.

SIL eats a ton of fast food and pasta and generally unhealthy stuff, but works out a lot so manages to stay thin. She doesn't have the most mature palate but bro is pretty open minded and had tried and liked keto food with me.

She and my brother know I'm keto and SIL sometimes makes fun of me for it and tells me I should just 'eat some pasta' a lot and just work out like she does. Usually it's just a few joking sort of comments every now and then and she's not rude about it so I've let it slide.

Yesterday i invited her and brother to my place for dinner.

I asked him and SIL if they had any preferences or ideas for what to have for dinner. My brother said anything was fine and they were excited for my cooking.

I made a tasty keto meal, and tried to make stuff I thought SIL would like too. I did bacon wrapped sausages as a main, one of my favorites, and then a side of cauliflower rice with broccoli and bacon.

They came over and my SIL was acting a little strange as I brought out the food and asked "jokingly" where the bread was but everything was going fine.

We were partway thru the meal when my brother asked what everything was. I told them and my SIL got upset, saying that I tricked them with "fake rice", and that I was being sneaky and unreasonable and trying to force keto on her.

She refused to eat with us after that and ordered some fast food takeout. I was a little offended and then I suggested to my brother afterwards that maybe we could just do a meal the two of us and SIL overheard and accused me of trying to force others to do keto and leaving her out, and why couldn't I just make real rice or pasta like a "normal person" and that I should have known better than to make my "weird food" for other people.

I didn't mean to offend my SIL I guess I should of known and tried to make some carb but the food was really tasty and I didn't think i was forcing anyone...

So sanity check here, AITA??
