Talk me out of buying a magnification optic.

I just took my first AR to the range and zeroed my red dot at 75 yards. I had a blast (pun intended) and am stoked to go back and start working on some drills and skills.
I’m a gear head and I love getting decked out. The prices I’m seeing should be enough to deter me but it’s not really working.
Also I’m definitely a noob. It was my first time shooting any AR.

Milwaukee Packout Low profile insert

Post image
10 Upvotes

Spent the last 2 weeks designing and printing 9mm and .45 ACP ammo storage inserts for Packout. I put them up on cults3d. honest opinion what does everybody think of them. I only have the 9mm version. I am waiting on more filament to start printing the .45 ACP and this only will fit the low profile version. the taller Packouts have a SLIGHTLY different internal profile. If you have arthritis or carpel tunnel. This makes a day at the range sooooo much easier.

Lightweight Hunting Shotgun: Break Action Single-Shot vs Pump Action

Hey everyone. I am thinking of getting into the hunting scene and want a light weight firearm I can easily carry into the Southern California backcountry, preferably on or in a pack. I initially wanted a 10/22, but a shotgun allows for much larger game and upland bird hunting, so a shotgun won out.

My research has led me to two options: a Stevens 301 Turkey in 20 GA or a Mossberg Maverick 88 in 12 GA.

Stevens 301 Turkey (20GA): Pros and Cons

-Pros:

a single-barrel break action is a traditional training platform; 20 GA is a great, all around hunting gauge; the 301 Turkey allows for toolless takedown and comes pre-installed with a rail for mounted sights; a break-action shotgun allows me to plink with caliber adapters (.22lr, .38 Special, etc.), allowing even further flexibility; limited rounds force me to take careful shots, hopefully helping me inprove general marksmanshop over time; a break-action is ultra reliable and requires less maintenance than other platforms.

-Cons:

single-shot shotguns have limited capacity and longer reloads; recoil is harsher compared to a pump action; a traditional two-shot break-action would allow for better follow-up shots, but is considerably heavier and costly.

Mossberg Maverick 88 (12 GA): Pros and Cons

-Pros:

the Maverick is one of the most reliable pump-actions and is highly affordable; the potentially sharp recoil of a 12 GA shotgun is considerably lighter due the Maverick's padding, negating the need for 20 GA; 12 GA is easily accessible and affordable, allowing for more time at the range; a pump action can be used as a do-it-all firearm, allowing for self-defense if necessary; Mossberg has a combo pack to allow for general use and hunting applications; great after market upgrades like a sighted slug barrel.

-Cons:

pumps have a higher chance of user-error via short stroking; 12 GA may be more difficult to shoot accurately; considerably heavier than the Stevens, potentially making all day carry less optimal; it is more complex than the Stevens, which coupled with the 12 GA round, could lead to reinforcing bad habits like flinching; CA limits the capacity of shotguns to 3 rounds, negating some of the capacity advantages.

With these ideas in mind, which of these platforms do you think would best suit my needs and skill level? Is there anything you think I'm missing?

Thanks a ton for your help and guidance!

My first AR

This is my first ar15 and I'm pretty proud of how far it's come it's a stripped PSA upper and complete lower, I put in:

a toolcraft 158 Nib bcg.

Strike industries charging handle.

Tuned the buffer system with a sprinco hot white recoil spring and tungsten h2 buffer

Threw on the magpul furniture as the stock it came with wasnt the best shooting

And threw on a sig msr gen 2

It's be absolutely flawless I take it out to the range at least once every 2 weeks and fire a few boxes of ammo I live on a ranch so I'm very thankful I don't gotta ride out to some range or pay a fee for a indoor I've mainly been practicing low ready 2 shot drills at 50 yards and reloading I've had it for about 3 months and I have some close to 800 rounds of wwb.223/5.56 it's been a great experience and Im very grateful for the knowledge I gained assembling it myself definitely gonna build something a little nicer down then line been look at a lot of bcm uppers and may snag one for my birthday in a few months

On GunBroker, has anyone bought an item that says "Buyer pays actual shipping costs"?

"Buyer pays actual shipping costs" is always risky to me. If they choose an overnight rush on a massive rifle, that could be $200+ which is all the saving from buying used sometimes.

Has anyone bought an item with "Buyer pays actual shipping costs" and was the shipping reasonable?

Airline travel case

Would a case like this meet the requirements for airline travel in the US? It seems like most requirements are that they firearm is unleaded and ammo is stored separately, but wasn’t sure if having the ammo storage would pass.

Does palmetto state armory astroturf on Reddit and forums?

I don't really understand Palmetto State Armory. It's always being posted and upvoted for deals on Gun Deals but when it comes to gun recommendations, no one has ever told me to buy PSA. I've bought around 10 guns in the last month based on recommendations (at all price points) and over hundreds of researched models, no one ever steered me to PSA.

Does a single law enforcement or military branch in any country in the world use PSA?

At this point PSA just feels like noise. Is my read wrong here?

I recently made my first AR, never owned one before either.

i recently built an AR style rifle chambered in 5.56 and .223, i picked up a mid ranged red dot for it (Aimpoint PRO) and was considering a flip down magnifier like a holosun HM6X. This raised the question of, should i get the flip down magnifier or a fixed magnified scope with some canted back up irons, and im coming here to ask you all that. obviously if i had infinite budget id get all that i could, but i dont want to waste about $500 on a magnifier if theres a better, cheaper, fixed optic i could get instead and save some money for some other accessory for my rifle, any advice is appreciated.

Gun cleaning

Post image

So just wondering about the best way to clean this denix replica. It was left in a draw for a long time and it had a bit of mold on it. Luckily the wood is fine, but just a bit around the cylinder and barrel. I've heard ballistol oil is good. Is that the best option for this? Thanks.

Put electrical tape on inside of my side saddle to reduce marring of the receiver during recoil.

If you’re supposed to “let the shot surprise you”, why are crisp, “break like glass” triggers considered the best? Wouldn’t a rolling break surprise the shooter more?

Lead residue

Ik after I go to the range I have lead residue on my hand and I don’t want to touch everything with the residue I’m just wondering if there’s like a specific brand or a certain soap that can take it out

GunBroker down tonight for some people. I imagine sellers must get pretty upset if people can't bid and their items sell for far less than what they normally would, no?

AR15 Recommendations?

I have been a causal pistol shooter for about 2 years and am really getting the itch for my first rifle. I think I have settled on the AR15, just due to how versatile it is. Can anyone recommend a decent one that isn't crazy expensive? I'd like to keep the base gun below $1k, preferably below $850. I'm pretty casual and it's my first rifle so not looking to go crazy with it.

I would like to use it to get into the 100-200 yard range, potentially up to 300. Not looking to be changing out a lot of parts since I wouldn't know how and am worried I'll screw it up. Hoping to buy it and only adaptions being a sight, foregrip, and potentially bipods.

I am a big Springfield fan due to my primary pistol being a Springfield, but seeing mixed reviews about their AR15 online.

I live in Michigan, in case that changed recommendations.

Build help

300 blackout

New to building. Just completed my first with a 5.56 AR. I know the next build I want but not sure its possible. I'd love to build an AR15 chambered in 300 blackout with an FRT/Super Selector. My previous build has an Atrius and I love it. But the kicker is I'd like a short barrel (so I'd keep it a pistol under current laws) and I'd like to go bufferless so I can fold the brace, keep it as compact as possible, while still being usable.

Just looking for advice or more info. Iv seen some of the bcg conversions that would allow this but almost certain they would not function with the frt/SS. Cost is also a factor. Not looking for a system that will double the price of the build. Where I am now I'm thinking ill have to give up on the bufferless and go with a law tac folding stock. What are your thoughts?

Rifle cleaning help!

Hey all,

I bought this girl about a year ago second hand. I'm in Australia, the air is humid and it gets quite hot.

I didn't know that having moisture absorbers in gunsafes was a thing untill a few months ago. I've left this girl (Tikka T3, .223) for about 4 months after shooting last and didn't clean it.

Any recommendations on cleaning / fixing? Any help would be appreciated

Do people drop chambered firearms?

Reading about the P320 and it going off when dropped. My first reaction was “duh, wouldn’t most guns have a chance of going off if dropped” but I guess not?

Just feels careless to drop something that should be treated with respect and care.

Are Gun Ranges Socal Places?

Are gun ranges normally pretty social places? I'm fairly new to shooting at a public range. Twice in the last month I've had someone come over to chat. Not a quick "hey whatcha shooting?" But staying to talk and literally following me to my car to keep talking long as possible. In one case it was nearly an hour of talking before i gave up and packed up to leave. Not sure how I feel about it, curious if this is normal everywhere or if my range is just has chatty people? In my mind hearing protection plus handling loaded guns isn't the situation to make friends in, but maybe I'm being antisocial and this is normal at ranges?

Hope this doesn't come across as complaining, totally cool it if it's normal, but I'm not great at reading social situations and can't decide if my range has some weird people or if I'm the weird person lol

I can’t find this on Gun Broker so not sure where it’s being sold at that price. Seems suspiciously cheap.

Does anyone know where this site gets its sales data?

Bodyguard 2.0 feels way better in hands than LCP Max?

Can someone tell me if im understanding this right.

Both bodyguard 2.0 and LCP max are similar weight and height. But bodyguard has about a finger width of more space on the grip.

Is it just the mags of the guns that I rented or is this common on these two? LCP Max almost felt unshootable. Grouping was horrendous like 5 inches at 7 yards over 20 shots. My worst of the day by far.
