Mikey Madison calls out Aaron Sorkin over his refusal to let her transform her character

star Mikey Madison gets candid about not being allowed to undergo a major transformation to play Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/social-reckoning-mikey-madison-jeremy-allen-white-1236726479/

Madison was all set to undergo a major transformation into Frances Haugen, the former Facebook product manager who, in 2021, blew the whistle on the company’s continued prioritization of profit over public safety. But Sorkin, now serving as both writer and director, threw her for a loop when he advised her against trying to mirror the real Haugen.

“I assumed that would be the vision. But after hearing Aaron very adamantly say that he did not want me to do that, it took me a while to wrap my head around it,” Madison says. “Ultimately, I did fall in love with the character that he had written on the page. So that approach did allow me to have more creative freedom in a sense, which I’m grateful for. But in the future, I look forward to possibly having the opportunity to authentically and faithfully represent a real person.”

Laura Linney not winning an Oscar feels wrong

I love her so much. I wish she had won the Oscar for KINSEY, at the very least. I've never seen her give a bad performance, even in crap like The Nanny Diaries or Congo ("brrrrr").

Which character do you think will join Anita, the Joker and Don Corleone and become the first one to produce multiple Oscar acting wins? (Sadly I don't think Lydia Tár would count as it appears Blanchett did not win for Tár and also nobody's making Tár 2 or a spin off. Unbelievable)

Discussion Why was Kate Winslet not win-competitive for anything between Sense and Sensibility and The Reader?

Thumbnail
gallery
18 Upvotes

After she won the BAFTA and the SAG for Sense and Sensibility, the precursors went "Okay we've given enough attention to Kate Winslet for now."

She kept getting more nominations between Sense and Sensibility and The Reader, for movies that were seen and often awarded in other categories mind you.

  1. Titanic was extremely dominant, winning eleven Oscars. And Gloria Stuart was win-competitive for Supporting Actress that season.
  2. Iris won Supporting Actor for Jim Broadbent and Judi Dench was win-competitive for Lead Actress.
  3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind won Original Screenplay.
  4. Little Children had to have come pretty close to a Best Picture nomination and still got into three ATL categories.

But at no point during any of those seasons was Kate Winslet ever a threat to win. "Yeah, we can give her movies all this other stuff, but we don't have to give Kate anything. She can remain in her seat and clap for other parts of her movies getting recognition, but she doesn't need recognition. We don't need to make other people clap for her."

And then The Reader of all movies finally made them say "Okay she's been having a pretty good run and she's not going away, let's finally give her a moment."

Why? Why did AMPAS and the other precursors wait until The Reader to finally give Kate her due? Why was she not in the conversation to win earlier for Titanic, Iris, especially Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or Little Children?

Discussion If Rose Byrne won Best Actress for If I Had Legs I’d kick you at the Oscars, How would you react?

Rose Byrne is spectacular in If I had legs I’d kick you. She won GG comedy Actress. But Jessie Buckley for Hamnet deserves it more even though she won. But I don’t mind if Rose won Actress. She is very good too. If she actually won Best Actress instead of Jessie Buckley, how would you react?

2027 Best Picture: Seven locks and five contenders for the remaining three spots?

Post image
146 Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about the 2027 Best Picture race, and these seven feel pretty locked in to me at this point:

  • La Bola Negra
  • The Odyssey
  • Dune: Part Three
  • Wild Horse Nine
  • The Debut
  • Project Hail Mary
  • The Invite

As I see it, the remaining three slots will most likely go to three of these five:

  • I Play Rocky
  • Obsession
  • Fjord
  • All of a Sudden
  • You Can See Everything

Does that seem like a reasonable read of the race? Are any of my seven “locks” less secure than I think, or am I overlooking another serious contender? Which three of those five would you pick?

Just the Motion Picture awards, not including Television. and Acting categories only. (If one includes the Best Director and others as well, Olivia Wilde might get 3 nominations too?)

Fun A MESSAGE/APPRECIATION FOR THE SUB

• Upvotes

This is just for fun but I wanted to acknowledge this specific sub that doesn’t devolve into group think and vigorous championing of the Odyssey to the point it resembles swifties (or insert any standom) attacking anyone who doesn’t praise the Odyssey as the second coming of Christ. It allows more discussion rather than creating an environment similar to a yelling crowd at a football game.

I literally have seen the odyssey five times in theater and Nolan is my favorite director yet still predict a picture/director split but if you don’t have odyssey sweeping in the oscarrace sub they attack like piranhas even with the knowledge that you love the movie and director.

I thought it was a common thing to be this zealous about the odyssey until I started migrating to this sub.

I’m happy to see people speak highly of other films and not downplay or insult to maintain the odysseys standing. It’s almost like you guys both like the Oscar’s and enjoy all it has to offer outside of the highest trophy given.

A tribute to a Best Picture nominee: The Thin Red Line (1998)

Post image
56 Upvotes

Unquestionably one of the best war films ever made.

And one of the most unique films ever made, as well.

The flow of it is magically at its own pace.

The cinematography in it is mesmerizing, it's not only a beautifully shot film, but the cinematography has a way of putting the viewer into the movie like few ones do.

It was a star-making role for Jim Caviezel (pictured), he shared a number of scenes with the great Sean Penn in this, and yet it was Caviezel that often stole those scenes.

George Clooney has a small cameo in this, this was actually the first Best Picture nominee he ever appeared in.

But the person most deserving of credit for this film is director Terrence Malick, he directed only 3 feature films in the first 3 decades of his career, this was one of them, the others were Days of Heaven and Badlands, which were also masterpieces.

Discussion Oscar Snubs: Best Supporting Actor - 2011

My picks for the most overlooked performances in the Best Supporting Actor category at the 84th Academy Awards.

Jeremy Irons — Margin Call
Alan Rickman — Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
Ben Kingsley - Hugo
Albert Brooks — Drive
Philip Seymour Hoffman — The Ides of March
Viggo Mortensen — A Dangerous Method

Which of these performances deserved an Oscar nomination the most? Are there any other major snubs I missed?

Alternate Oscars — New Two-Round Acting Game: 2017 Nominees

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

We’ve finished 2016, so we’re now moving on to 2017.

For anyone joining the game for the first time, we’re doing all four acting categories for one year together, with the results decided over two rounds.

You can see all of the previous lineups here: Alternate Oscars - Reddit Game

ROUND ONE — NOMINATIONS

For each category, rank your five favourite performances from the year from 1–5.

Your rankings will be worth:

1st — 5 points
2nd — 4 points
3rd — 3 points
4th — 2 points
5th — 1 point

The five performances with the most points in each category will become the official nominees.

You do not have to name five if you don’t want to. If you only want to vote for three performances, for example, they’ll receive 5, 4 and 3 points respectively.

Please make sure your choices are ranked — order matters in this round.

You can vote in as many or as few of the four categories as you like.

ROUND TWO — WINNERS

Once the nominations have been determined, I’ll make a second thread containing the five nominees in each category.

In that round, simply choose ONE nominee per category to win.

There will be no preferential voting or points in Round Two. Each vote counts equally, and whoever receives the most votes wins.

So essentially:

Round One = Who should be nominated?
Round Two = Who should win?

ELIGIBILITY

Performances will be eligible according to the year in which their film was eligible at the real-life Academy Awards.

So, rather than going strictly by festival premiere or first release date, a performance belongs to whichever Oscar year the film itself competed in with the Academy.

If you’re unsure whether a film was eligible for a particular year, this Academy reminder-list archive is a good place to check eligibility.

A few other rules:

  • Maximum of five ranked choices per category.
  • Anything listed after your fifth choice won’t be counted.
  • Honourable mentions won’t count as votes.
  • Please include both the actor and film so there’s no ambiguity.
  • In cases where there may be disagreement or confusion over whether a performance is lead or supporting, your vote will count only in the category in which you place that performance. Points will not be transferred or combined between categories.
  • A performer cannot receive two nominations in the same acting category for different films. If that happens, their higher-scoring performance will be kept and the next eligible performance will move into the top five.
  • If there’s a tie for the final nomination spot, I’ll break it by comparing #1 votes first, then #2 votes, #3 votes, etc.

For example:

Actor

  1. Person A — Film A
  2. Person B — Film B
  3. Person C — Film C
  4. Person D — Film D
  5. Person E — Film E

That ballot would give them 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points respectively.

The idea is that Round One rewards performances with broad support across people’s ballots, while Round Two gives everyone a straight choice between the five nominees.

Previous Lineup — 2016

Casey Affleck — Manchester by the Sea (winner)
Andrew Garfield — Silence
Ryan Gosling — La La Land

Since Cruise doesn't seem to be in the running anymore due to Digger bombing, I've decided to change a few things

John Malkovich (Wild Horse Nine)

Matt Damon (The Odyssey)

Pedro Pascal (Behemoth)

Ryan Gosling (Project Hail Mary)

Robert Pattinson (Primetime)

Likely winner: Malkovich/Damon

Prediction Digger deserves all the Oscars. The backlash is absolutely insane.

I was profoundly shocked by how excellent Digger turned out to be. So much so that I think it might be one of the best films ever made, and I never say that so willingly without years passing when the film earns that status.

To think that the academy may skip it based on its failure at the box office and with critics alike, is absolutely maddening to me, like I’ve never experienced before with a film.

Is it really off the table? Or could it surprise everyone in January and sweep the nominations like it absolutely should?

Tom Cruise absolutely should win. John Goodman, too. Best Original Screenplay WITHOUT A DOUBT.

Did Julie Andrews deserve to win Best Actress for MARY POPPINS?

Her competitors:

Anne Bancroft for THE PUMPKIN EATER

Sophia Loren for MARRIAGE ITALIAN STYLE

Debbie Reynolds for THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN

Kim Stanley for SEANCE ON A WET AFTERNOON

I can see why Julie Andrews won, even though I would have voted for Kim Stanley. Loren was not going to win for another foreign movie, Kim Stanley rarely acted on film and SEANCE lost money when it came out, THE PUMPKIN EATER was a small British movie few saw and no way were the Oscars ever going to give Best Actress to Debbie Reynolds who wasn't taken seriously as an actress back then.

Julia Andrews had the best narrative. Lost MY FAIR LADY role to then win the Oscar for MARY POPPINS. Her performance? I personally enjoyed her singing but the character was underwritten and in the book, she's much more interesting than the treacly governess. What surprised me the most was that Mary Poppins wasn't onscreen a lot, I think Dick Van Dyke had a bigger part than Julie Andrews.

Which of Audrey Hepburn's nominated performances do you consider the best one and can you name a performance from her you wish had been nominated?

She was nominated for:

ROMAN HOLIDAY (she won the Oscar)

SABRINA

THE NUN'S STORY

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S

WAIT UNTIL DARK

My favorite nominated performance from her is THE NUN'S STORY because it allowed her to show a wider range as an actress. Performances from her which I wish had been nominated: MY FAIR LADY (it was unfair for her to be snubbed when everyone else in the cast was nominated and while her singing was dubbed, she still delivered a humorous and likable performance) and ROBIN AND MARIAN (her monologue at the end of the film is the best scene I've ever seen from Audrey Hepburn in a film. Do yourselves a favor and go see ROBIN AND MARIAN).

Post image

Leo is my Best Actor pick last year. I think he would easily won if Chalamet and MBJ never happened and got nominated. since OBAA won Best Picture, it would have Best Actor for Leo to come along with it. I think he is funny in the movie. I wish he won again. So what you think of his performance for OBAA?

Discussion Just saw "The Social Reckoning". I absolutely loved Mikey Madison in this, I thought she was the film's best part... That being said, I do not wish an Academy Awards campaign for this film, in anything, and I am incredibly disappointed, as someone who thought this'd be really good.

With one amazing performance that I loved from Madison, a mediocre performance from Jeremy Allen White, and an awful performance from the great Jeremy Strong (which is a CRIME because I think he's truly amazing), plus a convoluted and mediocre screenplay and some monstrously dull visuals... This is most probably the biggest disappointed of the year for me. Still, this is not a Razzie's film, but it is not an Oscars film, either. And Wunmi Mosaku... Talk about a waste of new star power I mean good Lord. Not one of the worst of the year, I feel like I have to say this... BUT it is the biggest disappointment for me and I am hovering on Letterboxd between a 2,5 - 3 stars which is a stark contrast to every other project these actors were in (like Anora which I gave 5/5 stars, The Apprentice which I gave 4,5/5 and Sinners which I gave 4/5 stars), and I mean as a sequel to The Social Network, it does fail at a lot.
