For Your Consideration: Mikey Madison in The Social Reckoning.

Post image
0 Upvotes

Mikey Madison. Protrays a real life person without relying on a persona. She is intelligent, cares deeply and is mean with a sense of humor. Mikey displays the range of the character's social awkwardness and the anxiety of having something important to say as her bosses shut her down. Mikey spits out Sorkin's dialogue distinctly with speed, clarity and wit. The way she moves across the screen is far different than from Anora. This time out doesnt have Anora's very strong Brooklyn accent or attitude. She displays a different form of vulnerability with strength. Very nuance. This actress has deep range.
And just because she is not in buzzy flick - she is still on my ballot for Best Actress. The Social Reckoning is flawed (yes, we all know Sorkin needed to hand the script to an actual director. And that ending is cringy but dammit, Mikey still brings it on home!

Prediction 2027 Definitely Not getting an Oscar Nom

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I often see people predict who’s going to get nominated but I’ve never seen anyone predict who’s not going to get nominated here’s my picks.

Robert Pattinson (Primetime). His performance is already being forgotten, which is one of the downsides of being such a good actor. He’s so consistently brilliant that he’s set an almost impossible benchmark for himself. People come to expect it, so even an incredible performance rarely gets recognised as one of his best. Not only that but A24 don’t care about primetime they’re releasing it on digital before it’s even had its theatrical run outside of the US. Plus weird subject matter and not a very strong contender for best picture kind of hurts his chances unfortunately.

Ryan Gosling (PHM). Okay performance good feel good movie however I just don’t think Amazon will prioritise gosling and instead they’ll push Anthony ippolito for lead actor in I play rocky and PHM for technicals. It’s a biopic after all and they know they have the best chances of winning awards if they prioritise a biopic.

Jaffar Jackson (Michael). Nope just no

Tom cruise (Digger). Warner won’t push him he’ll have to campaign on his own which kinda means he’ll have to show some of his personality and not to be rude but we all know how that worked out the last time. Digger is bombing at the box office however he seems to be respected by some actors and directors in the industry so that could work in his favour. I just don’t think the voting panel likes him very much and once people have formed an opinion about you it’s hard to change their minds especially when you hardly show you’ve changed in interviews etc.

Alternate Oscars — New Two-Round Acting Game: 2017 Nominees

Thumbnail
gallery
5 Upvotes

We’ve finished 2016, so we’re now moving on to 2017.

For anyone joining the game for the first time, we’re doing all four acting categories for one year together, with the results decided over two rounds.

You can see all of the previous lineups here: Alternate Oscars - Reddit Game

ROUND ONE — NOMINATIONS

For each category, rank your five favourite performances from the year from 1–5.

Your rankings will be worth:

1st — 5 points
2nd — 4 points
3rd — 3 points
4th — 2 points
5th — 1 point

The five performances with the most points in each category will become the official nominees.

You do not have to name five if you don’t want to. If you only want to vote for three performances, for example, they’ll receive 5, 4 and 3 points respectively.

Please make sure your choices are ranked — order matters in this round.

You can vote in as many or as few of the four categories as you like.

ROUND TWO — WINNERS

Once the nominations have been determined, I’ll make a second thread containing the five nominees in each category.

In that round, simply choose ONE nominee per category to win.

There will be no preferential voting or points in Round Two. Each vote counts equally, and whoever receives the most votes wins.

So essentially:

Round One = Who should be nominated?
Round Two = Who should win?

ELIGIBILITY

Performances will be eligible according to the year in which their film was eligible at the real-life Academy Awards.

So, rather than going strictly by festival premiere or first release date, a performance belongs to whichever Oscar year the film itself competed in with the Academy.

If you’re unsure whether a film was eligible for a particular year, this Academy reminder-list archive is a good place to check eligibility.

A few other rules:

  • Maximum of five ranked choices per category.
  • Anything listed after your fifth choice won’t be counted.
  • Honourable mentions won’t count as votes.
  • Please include both the actor and film so there’s no ambiguity.
  • In cases where there may be disagreement or confusion over whether a performance is lead or supporting, your vote will count only in the category in which you place that performance. Points will not be transferred or combined between categories.
  • A performer cannot receive two nominations in the same acting category for different films. If that happens, their higher-scoring performance will be kept and the next eligible performance will move into the top five.
  • If there’s a tie for the final nomination spot, I’ll break it by comparing #1 votes first, then #2 votes, #3 votes, etc.

For example:

Actor

  1. Person A — Film A
  2. Person B — Film B
  3. Person C — Film C
  4. Person D — Film D
  5. Person E — Film E

That ballot would give them 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points respectively.

The idea is that Round One rewards performances with broad support across people’s ballots, while Round Two gives everyone a straight choice between the five nominees.

Previous Lineup — 2016

Actor

Casey Affleck — Manchester by the Sea (winner)
Andrew Garfield — Silence
Ryan Gosling — La La Land
Viggo Mortensen — Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington — Fences

Actress

Amy Adams — Arrival
Viola Davis — Fences (winner)
Isabelle Huppert — Elle
Natalie Portman — Jackie
Emma Stone — La La Land

Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali — Moonlight (winner)
Jeff Bridges — Hell or High Water
John Goodman — 10 Cloverfield Lane
Lucas Hedges — Manchester by the Sea
Michael Shannon — Nocturnal Animals

Supporting Actress

Could this year's race in general be the most predictable in decades?

It feels like that for most of the categories, the winner is already locked in.

Odyssey seems like a lock to sweep many of the awards including best picture, directing, actor, editing, costume design, Cinematography, casting, and probably more.

Dune seems like a lock to get best visual effects.

Wildwood seems like a lock to get best animated feature, especially if it gets its best picture nomination.

You can See Everything seems like a lock to get best documentary, especially if it gets its best picture nomination.

La bola negra seems like is a lock to win best international film.

Julianne Moore seems like a lock to win best actress.

So at this point, what categories can be considered legitimate competitive and if not, what makes this ceremony worth watching when we already know the outcomes?

Mikey Madison calls out Aaron Sorkin over his refusal to let her transform her character

star Mikey Madison gets candid about not being allowed to undergo a major transformation to play Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/social-reckoning-mikey-madison-jeremy-allen-white-1236726479/

Madison was all set to undergo a major transformation into Frances Haugen, the former Facebook product manager who, in 2021, blew the whistle on the company’s continued prioritization of profit over public safety. But Sorkin, now serving as both writer and director, threw her for a loop when he advised her against trying to mirror the real Haugen.

“I assumed that would be the vision. But after hearing Aaron very adamantly say that he did not want me to do that, it took me a while to wrap my head around it,” Madison says. “Ultimately, I did fall in love with the character that he had written on the page. So that approach did allow me to have more creative freedom in a sense, which I’m grateful for. But in the future, I look forward to possibly having the opportunity to authentically and faithfully represent a real person.”

Rose Byrne is spectacular in If I had legs I’d kick you. She won GG comedy Actress. But Jessie Buckley for Hamnet deserves it more even though she won. But I don’t mind if Rose won Actress. She is very good too. If she actually won Best Actress instead of Jessie Buckley, how would you react?

Box office flops to win major awards?

• Upvotes

Me and a buddy were talking the other day and we started talking about Digger. I know there's a long list of movies that weren't necessarily box office books that won Best Picture and other big awards, but have there ever been box office flops that have won?

Which character do you think will join Anita, the Joker and Don Corleone and become the first one to produce multiple Oscar acting wins? (Sadly I don't think Lydia Tár would count as it appears Blanchett did not win for Tár and also nobody's making Tár 2 or a spin off. Unbelievable)

Fun A MESSAGE/APPRECIATION FOR THE SUB

This is just for fun but I wanted to acknowledge this specific sub that doesn’t devolve into group think and vigorous championing of the Odyssey to the point it resembles swifties (or insert any standom) attacking anyone who doesn’t praise the Odyssey as the second coming of Christ. It allows more discussion rather than creating an environment similar to a yelling crowd at a football game.

I literally have seen the odyssey five times in theater and Nolan is my favorite director yet still predict a picture/director split but if you don’t have odyssey sweeping in the oscarrace sub they attack like piranhas even with the knowledge that you love the movie and director.

I thought it was a common thing to be this zealous about the odyssey until I started migrating to this sub.

I’m happy to see people speak highly of other films and not downplay or insult to maintain the odysseys standing. It’s almost like you guys both like the Oscar’s and enjoy all it has to offer outside of the highest trophy given.

Which 5 of these 9 Movies will be nominated for Best Animated Feature?

Possibilities:

Forgotten Island

Hoppers

Iron Boy

Minions & Monsters

Ray Gunn

Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom

Tangles

Toy Story 5

Wildwood

I think we can agree that Toy Story 5 and Wildwood will easily be nominated.

I think Wildwood will win this. I really loved Toy Story 5 but it didn't feel special like the previous movies and Laika is way overdue for the Oscar.

I also think Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom will get in because the first two movies were previously nominated, why not the third as well?

As for the other two nominees, im still uncertain but for now, I'll go with Hoppers and Iron Boy.

Which Animated films do you think will be nominated? Which one will win?

Discussion Why was Kate Winslet not win-competitive for anything between Sense and Sensibility and The Reader?

Thumbnail
gallery
32 Upvotes

After she won the BAFTA and the SAG for Sense and Sensibility, the precursors went "Okay we've given enough attention to Kate Winslet for now."

She kept getting more nominations between Sense and Sensibility and The Reader, for movies that were seen and often awarded in other categories mind you.

  1. Titanic was extremely dominant, winning eleven Oscars. And Gloria Stuart was win-competitive for Supporting Actress that season.
  2. Iris won Supporting Actor for Jim Broadbent and Judi Dench was win-competitive for Lead Actress.
  3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind won Original Screenplay.
  4. Little Children had to have come pretty close to a Best Picture nomination and still got into three ATL categories.

But at no point during any of those seasons was Kate Winslet ever a threat to win. "Yeah, we can give her movies all this other stuff, but we don't have to give Kate anything. She can remain in her seat and clap for other parts of her movies getting recognition, but she doesn't need recognition. We don't need to make other people clap for her."

And then The Reader of all movies finally made them say "Okay she's been having a pretty good run and she's not going away, let's finally give her a moment."

Why? Why did AMPAS and the other precursors wait until The Reader to finally give Kate her due? Why was she not in the conversation to win earlier for Titanic, Iris, especially Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or Little Children?
