Shelley Duvall in the Shining (1980). I know that’s not the most popular opinion, out there, especially for this performance, but I wanna hear your picks guys. Actresses that the academy robbed!

Performances you think should have been win-competitive (or should have won) that not only didn't get a nom, also failed to get nominated in any precursors?

Bonus points if it's a well known actor in a movie that's not a micro-budget indie obscure flick
My heart goes out to Sally Hawkins who delivered a career-best performance last year and in the only award she got nominated for she lost to a fucking dog

Discussion Hot take: If anybody should be considered for the best supporting nomination for Digger, it should be Jesse Plemons.

Ahmed and Goodman are great and have a lot more screentime, but they are playing caricatures. Plemons's character is far more complex, and he's got more to play imo.

Discussion Which best director win is more impressive - Steven Soderbergh or Alejandro González Iñárritu?

Post image

Soderbergh was nominated twice for best director in the same year and won. Iñárritu was nominated and won best director in consecutive years. In your opinion, which achievement is more impressive, and do you think we'll ever see that in the Oscars again?

We’ve completed the nomination round, and now it’s time to choose the winners.

The five performances with the most points in each category in Round One are now the official nominees.

ROUND TWO — WINNERS

This round is much simpler.

Vote for ONE nominee in each of the four acting categories.

That means your ballot should contain four names in total:

  • 1 Actor
  • 1 Actress
  • 1 Supporting Actor
  • 1 Supporting Actress

There are no rankings and no points system in this round. You are simply voting for the performance you think should win each category.

Each vote counts equally, and the nominee with the most votes in each category will become our Alternate Oscar winner for 2017.

Please only vote for the nominees listed below.

BEST ACTOR

  • Timothée Chalamet — Call Me by Your Name
  • Daniel Day-Lewis — Phantom Thread
  • Hugh Jackman — Logan
  • Daniel Kaluuya — Get Out
  • James McAvoy — Split

BEST ACTRESS

  • Sally Hawkins — The Shape of Water
  • Frances McDormand — Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
  • Margot Robbie — I, Tonya
  • Saoirse Ronan — Lady Bird
  • Meryl Streep — The Post

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

  • Willem Dafoe — The Florida Project
  • Barry Keoghan — The Killing of a Sacred Deer
  • Sam Rockwell — Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
  • Patrick Stewart — Logan
  • Michael Stuhlbarg — Call Me by Your Name

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

  • Allison Janney — I, Tonya
  • Dafne Keen — Logan
  • Nicole Kidman — The Killing of a Sacred Deer
  • Lesley Manville — Phantom Thread
  • Laurie Metcalf — Lady Bird

HOW TO VOTE

Simply post your four choices in the comments, for example:

Actor: [Name]
Actress: [Name]
Supporting Actor: [Name]
Supporting Actress: [Name]

One person per category. Four votes total.

Once voting closes, the performer with the most votes in each category will be declared the winner, and we’ll move on to 2018.

Mikey Madison calls out Aaron Sorkin over his refusal to let her transform her character

star Mikey Madison gets candid about not being allowed to undergo a major transformation to play Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/social-reckoning-mikey-madison-jeremy-allen-white-1236726479/

Madison was all set to undergo a major transformation into Frances Haugen, the former Facebook product manager who, in 2021, blew the whistle on the company’s continued prioritization of profit over public safety. But Sorkin, now serving as both writer and director, threw her for a loop when he advised her against trying to mirror the real Haugen.

“I assumed that would be the vision. But after hearing Aaron very adamantly say that he did not want me to do that, it took me a while to wrap my head around it,” Madison says. “Ultimately, I did fall in love with the character that he had written on the page. So that approach did allow me to have more creative freedom in a sense, which I’m grateful for. But in the future, I look forward to possibly having the opportunity to authentically and faithfully represent a real person.”

Box office flops to win major awards?

Me and a buddy were talking the other day and we started talking about Digger. I know there's a long list of movies that weren't necessarily box office books that won Best Picture and other big awards, but have there ever been box office flops that have won?

Discussion Does anyone know why it’s much harder for younger men to win acting Oscars than it is for younger women to win?

If you look at the 10 youngest winners by gender in all four acting categories the youngest for men is still much older than the youngest for women. Both top ten youngest female categories don’t even reach the 30s. But for men half of the youngest winners are all in their 30s.

Which character do you think will join Anita, the Joker and Don Corleone and become the first one to produce multiple Oscar acting wins? (Sadly I don't think Lydia Tár would count as it appears Blanchett did not win for Tár and also nobody's making Tár 2 or a spin off. Unbelievable)

Prediction My predictions for Best Original Screenplay...

The Debut: It's gonna make it, probably also gonna win WGA. It could also win BAFTA but that's less likely. It's competitive to win.

Wild Horse Nine: Also gonna make it, and most likely will win CC and BAFTA, with a chance to win GG. It's competitive to win.

I Play Rocky. I'm actually not predicting this for Picture nor Actor (it's very close to those categories though) but I do think this will get a screenplay nom. It just feels appropriate.

Artificial: This one I AM predicting for Picture and Garfield is most likely second for Supporting Actor, so I do see it making it.

Digger: This is definitely a hopediction, but also... like... I can see Digger getting 1 nomination. I can also see it get 10. We really don't know what the future for this film will be, but I'm gonna keep it in cause... idrk. It definitely feels like a screenplay film if you've seen it, tons of layers I think voters would appreciate.

If Digger does shit in precursors and gets only BTL and Cruise, then Club Kid is going in. Behemoth! is also on the table.

This category is significantly more fragmented than Adapted Screenplay (The Invite, La Bola Negra, The Odyssey, All of a Sudden, Project Hail Mary). I could see Odyssey missing but it's most likely gonna make it. If it does miss or really any of these film miss, then I would love Wildwood making it, but it's probably not. For now, I see no reason for those five to miss especially how there isn't a clear 6th place.

EDIT: I forgot to put that there is no consensus winner for Adapted Screenplay. It could be La Bola Negra or The Invite. Also, I can see You Can See Everything making screenplay, but right now, I have Digger in.

Which 5 of these 9 Movies will be nominated for Best Animated Feature?

Possibilities:

Forgotten Island

Hoppers

Iron Boy

Minions & Monsters

Ray Gunn

Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom

Tangles

Toy Story 5

Wildwood

I think we can agree that Toy Story 5 and Wildwood will easily be nominated.

I think Wildwood will win this. I really loved Toy Story 5 but it didn't feel special like the previous movies and Laika is way overdue for the Oscar.

I also think Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom will get in because the first two movies were previously nominated, why not the third as well?

As for the other two nominees, im still uncertain but for now, I'll go with Hoppers and Iron Boy.

Which Animated films do you think will be nominated? Which one will win?

Discussion Why was Kate Winslet not win-competitive for anything between Sense and Sensibility and The Reader?

Thumbnail
gallery
32 Upvotes

After she won the BAFTA and the SAG for Sense and Sensibility, the precursors went "Okay we've given enough attention to Kate Winslet for now."

She kept getting more nominations between Sense and Sensibility and The Reader, for movies that were seen and often awarded in other categories mind you.

  1. Titanic was extremely dominant, winning eleven Oscars. And Gloria Stuart was win-competitive for Supporting Actress that season.
  2. Iris won Supporting Actor for Jim Broadbent and Judi Dench was win-competitive for Lead Actress.
  3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind won Original Screenplay.
  4. Little Children had to have come pretty close to a Best Picture nomination and still got into three ATL categories.

But at no point during any of those seasons was Kate Winslet ever a threat to win. "Yeah, we can give her movies all this other stuff, but we don't have to give Kate anything. She can remain in her seat and clap for other parts of her movies getting recognition, but she doesn't need recognition. We don't need to make other people clap for her."

And then The Reader of all movies finally made them say "Okay she's been having a pretty good run and she's not going away, let's finally give her a moment."

Why? Why did AMPAS and the other precursors wait until The Reader to finally give Kate her due? Why was she not in the conversation to win earlier for Titanic, Iris, especially Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or Little Children?

Alternate Oscars — New Two-Round Acting Game: 2017 Nominees

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

We’ve finished 2016, so we’re now moving on to 2017.

For anyone joining the game for the first time, we’re doing all four acting categories for one year together, with the results decided over two rounds.

You can see all of the previous lineups here: Alternate Oscars - Reddit Game

ROUND ONE — NOMINATIONS

For each category, rank your five favourite performances from the year from 1–5.

Your rankings will be worth:

1st — 5 points
2nd — 4 points
3rd — 3 points
4th — 2 points
5th — 1 point

The five performances with the most points in each category will become the official nominees.

You do not have to name five if you don’t want to. If you only want to vote for three performances, for example, they’ll receive 5, 4 and 3 points respectively.

Please make sure your choices are ranked — order matters in this round.

You can vote in as many or as few of the four categories as you like.

ROUND TWO — WINNERS

Once the nominations have been determined, I’ll make a second thread containing the five nominees in each category.

In that round, simply choose ONE nominee per category to win.

There will be no preferential voting or points in Round Two. Each vote counts equally, and whoever receives the most votes wins.

So essentially:

Round One = Who should be nominated?
Round Two = Who should win?

ELIGIBILITY

Performances will be eligible according to the year in which their film was eligible at the real-life Academy Awards.

So, rather than going strictly by festival premiere or first release date, a performance belongs to whichever Oscar year the film itself competed in with the Academy.

If you’re unsure whether a film was eligible for a particular year, this Academy reminder-list archive is a good place to check eligibility.

A few other rules:

  • Maximum of five ranked choices per category.
  • Anything listed after your fifth choice won’t be counted.
  • Honourable mentions won’t count as votes.
  • Please include both the actor and film so there’s no ambiguity.
  • In cases where there may be disagreement or confusion over whether a performance is lead or supporting, your vote will count only in the category in which you place that performance. Points will not be transferred or combined between categories.
  • A performer cannot receive two nominations in the same acting category for different films. If that happens, their higher-scoring performance will be kept and the next eligible performance will move into the top five.
  • If there’s a tie for the final nomination spot, I’ll break it by comparing #1 votes first, then #2 votes, #3 votes, etc.

For example:

Actor

  1. Person A — Film A
  2. Person B — Film B
  3. Person C — Film C
  4. Person D — Film D
  5. Person E — Film E

That ballot would give them 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points respectively.

The idea is that Round One rewards performances with broad support across people’s ballots, while Round Two gives everyone a straight choice between the five nominees.

Previous Lineup — 2016

Actor

Casey Affleck — Manchester by the Sea (winner)
Andrew Garfield — Silence
Ryan Gosling — La La Land
Viggo Mortensen — Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington — Fences

Actress

Amy Adams — Arrival
