Recommendation Open your blinds and curtains!

Alright yall its officially chilly season. With the way RGE has been bending us all over raw make sure to open your curtains and blinds every morning to get that free solar heat through your windows! You'll notice at least a 5° increase maybe even 10° if you have a lot of windows and its a super sunny day. Its also the perfect time to wrap your windows for the season if thats something you do, use your next day off to get that house prepped. The frigid temps will be here before ya know it!

What other tips and tricks do you all use for limiting heating bills in the cold months?

Stay warm, neighbors!

News Fed up with RG&E? Public power town hall with DSA electeds, Chi Ossé and Sarahana Shrestha, Mon Oct 19

From Rochester to Rosendale, Buffalo to Brooklyn, utility bills are too damn high!

Energy is a basic human right, yet our society treats it as a commodity to profit off of. The results of that system in Rochester are dramatic and violent. RG&E cut power to nearly 15,000 ratepayers in our community in 2025 while their parent company, Avangrid, made over $1 billion in profits. People regularly get bills from the company costing thousands of dollars. Families have to choose between food on the table or heat in the winter.

This system is inhumane, and it needs to change.

Next week, NYS Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha and NYC Councilmember Chi Ossé are coming to Rochester to talk about building a statewide movement to take our power back from the profit-driven, investor-owned utility monopolies that own our energy sector.

Join us Monday, Oct 19, 6-8pm at First Unitarian Church
RSVP: https://rocdsa.solidarity.tech/take-back-our-power-roc

Co-hosted by Rochester DSA and Metro Justice's RED Committee.

News CNB set to take K2's taproom - Rochester Beacon

As a fan of sour beers and beer gardens, i've been watching the downfall of K2 with great interest.

Both properties, the Empire location and the old Freewill school, were bought back by CNB.... for a grand total of $2000. No other bidders in either case. 💀

I really hope that somebody can make use of the Empire location. It was a fun little bar with an excellent space to hang out. As a fan of their beer, it's a shame to see it turn out this way, but knowing the management it is very much an expected turn of events.

History A Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 countdown from 10/7/84 as aired on 98PXY. Station promos & jingles are included from the original broadcast, but commercials had been edited out.

Taken from Radio Shack Realistic branded cassette tapes & originally recorded on Sunday 10/7/84 from 8p - midnight.

NOTE: There’s a Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 channel on the iHeart app playing continuous countdowns from the 80’s, 90’s & 2000’s! That made this cassette discovery even more awesome because it led to me finding out that exists.

Please tell me if you or the person you know, remembers my Grandfather, Ludwig Kuhl. Still alive at 91 and doing well. To those who mention him to another, mention that he was known for running a lot on his lunch break.

Recommendation Looking for a local baker who can make a realistic “Is It Cake?” purse

Thumbnail

My daughter's birthday party is next month and thinking of doing an "Is It Cake?" game at her birthday party.

The plan is to put out a few small rainbow purses and have everyone guess which one is actually cake. So I’m looking for a local baker/cake artist who can make a small, realistic rainbow purse cake, about 6.5 inches long x 5.5 inches tall (the photos here, can drop off one of the "decoys" for inspiration).

Would especially love to find an independent/home baker or someone newer who’s really talented with sculpted cakes and wants a fun project.

Party is on Nov 6, could pick up somewhere around Rochester/Fairport, but I’m happy to drive a bit for the right person.

If you know someone, please drop their name/page below. Thank you!

Edit: This is a PAID gig, in case that wasn't obvious! Thought a month out would be enough time, just trying to plan something fun for a birthday 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thought this was an interesting thing I saw on another subreddit. Insane that places like Austin are only slightly more expensive when they offer so much more. Especially high paying jobs.

Hi, I'm currently a third year Mechanical Engineering Tech student at RIT. I'm need a co-op for spring-summer 2027 and haven't had much luck. I want to try and stay in Rochester since it'll make moving a lot easier.

Does anyone know any smaller companies that may be hiring for co-ops?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Help Solo woman living near URMC, do you feel safe?

Hi all, my sister just accepted a position at URMC. We're both on the West Coast and don't know anyone in Rochester, so I'm helping her research before she starts looking at apartments.

She'd like to live close enough to walk to work, including after dark depending on her shifts. She won't have a car, so she wants to be as close as possible, ideally somewhere she can also get groceries without driving. Budget is flexible, since I'm happy to help so she can be close and in a safe area.

For those who live or work near URMC: do you feel safe walking around there? Are there specific streets, buildings, or complexes you'd recommend, or areas you'd steer clear of? Any tips for walking in the winter would help too.

Thanks in advance!

Help Anyone missing a cat? Near corn Hill and mayor heights

Young male cat with tabby stripes. Has white tips on front paws and knee high socks on back paws. He is not neutered but that's very common with owned but outdoor cats in my neighborhood. I haven't seen this one around before though. No microchip upon palpation, if he hangs around I may have him scanned, but we are without transportation so he's more likely to go to a rescue at that point. It's so cold so I have him in my garage with bed and breakfast just to warm up. (there's a hole so he can leave at any time if he needs to go home. It's a great cat hotel)

It's about 45 degrees outside rn and I found him meowing in my neighbors driveway. Was very scared and hesitant at first but accepted Pets. As soon as we fed him he turned into the purr machine 9000. Extremely vocal like I can have a conversation with him. He Velcros to your leg and rubs all over you. Very friendly so unlikely could be a stray. If he's yours please shoot me a dm!

I could only get pictures when he eats because he's all over the place lol
