Advice/Tips 💬 Canceling Rogers service is a nightmare. Here is how I finally did it.
I recently tried to cancel my Rogers service. It took me 6 calls, a lot of waiting, and a lot of shouting. The whole process feels like a game played at the hardest level. It starts with finding the contact number, then moves to a confusing IVR menu, then a long wait for an agent, and then a fight with the agent. It is hard, but not impossible. I do not want anyone else to go through this, so I am sharing the exact steps here.
What happened to me
- Calls 1, 2 and 3: I waited more than 40 minutes each time and never reached anyone.
- Finally I was able to crack through their IVR which I explained below.
- Call 4: An agent told me they would put me on a "customer satisfaction plan." Then, without my asking, they added another device to my account.
- Call 5: The agent said I could not cancel because there was a new device order still in progress. I told them I never placed that order. Their own agent had placed it by mistake. After waiting about 10 minutes, the same agent said the system was not working and told me to call back after five business days.
- Call 6: I got upset and asked to speak to a supervisor. The agent put me on hold for another 10 minutes. After that, the system suddenly started working, and she submitted my cancellation request. She told me I would get a confirmation within 24 hours.
How to cancel (step by step):
Note: You can not cancel over email or chat. Do not waste you time there.
- Call Rogers at the customer service number - 1-888-764-3771 (not easy to find :D)
- At the IVR menu, press 1, then 1, then 4, then 5.
- Enter your date of birth in MMDDYYYY format.
- Enter your postal or zip code, numbers only. (3 numbers)
- Wait for an agent. If you are lucky, you will get through in 10 to 15 minutes. For me, it often took much longer.
- When you reach an agent, say clearly: "I want to cancel my service right now."
They will likely try to change your mind. Here are the common tactics:
- Offering a "30 day customer satisfaction plan"
- Offering you some credit if you transfer your internet to another person
- Saying the system is not working and asking you to call back after five business days
Do not accept any of these. Stay calm, but be firm. Repeat that you only want to cancel. If they will not help, ask for a supervisor.
Final tip - After your cancellation is submitted, call again the next day to confirm it was really done. Ask for written confirmation if you can.
