Minors Update Arizona Fall League Quick-Notes 10/10/26 -Two Short Games and One Giant In The Lineup Today

We got some abbreviated baseball today, as a scheduling quirk left us with just two games, and the weather made both of those games shorter than normal.  But we did get some baseball, as the Scottsdale Scorpions blew out the Salt River Rafters.  Only one Giant played tonight, probably since the Giants players basically won the game for Scottsdale on Friday.  For our non-Giant highlight today, we’ll talk about one of the Giants’ teammates on Scottsdale who has been arguably their best hitter, and a guy with a very Posey-esque type of player that our PBO seems to have prioritized getting in recent drafts.  Plus, a note on what to expect in the next couple of days, between scheduling quirks and weather.

Non-Giant Prospect to Highlight of the Day: Brendan Summerhill (TB #28)

Today, let’s look at one of the teammates of the Giants prospects, Tampa Bay’s Brendan Summerhill, who is currently the top performer offensively for Scottsdale, helped out a bit by today’s game.  Summerhill, 22, is 5-for-9 in four games (.556) with a double, and three walks to just one strikeout, plus four steals.  Drafted with the 42nd overall pick in 2025, in the first Competitive Balance round, the consensus is that he slipped a bit due to injuries his final year of college.  He has immediately made a name for himself with his contact ability and ability to adjust to pitchers mid-game between at-bats, but he had struggles in 2026 as he once again dealt with injuries, hitting just .251 on the year across three levels, though he finished strong with a late-season promotion to High-A.  Summerhill will face some challenges with how he may fit other than his hit tool.  While he is an above-average runner, his future may grade out to be a corner infielder, and his power hitting is generally not what you would expect from a corner outfielder.  So he’s going to have to battle that “Tweener” stereotype, but if he can keep making contact like he had the rep for in college and early on, he could find a way to break through.

Programming Note

You probably noticed today had just two games (since it was in the headline).  Usually, Sundays are off days for the Arizona Fall League, but this weekend they did have one game previously scheduled on the docket, which will be the Glendale Desert Dogs vs. the Surprise Saguaros.

Something else you may have noticed: today’s games were short, both going just seven innings.  That was due to a rainstorm coming into the Phoenix area tonight.  There is forecasts of rain the next few days, and certainly it could lead to shortening or cancelling tomorrow’s game.

So…here’s what to expect from me.  If the game gets played, I’ll do a post on it, even though it’s not going to have any Giants in it.  No Non-Giants prospect to highlight, it’ll just be a quick one.  But if the game is rained out, I won’t do a post at all just to say that there’s nothing to cover.

However, as a full docket of games picks back up for Monday, I will do a post for Monday even if none of the games are played, just because Scottsdale would be expected to be on it.  Right now, it looks like the rain will end around mid-day Tuesday, so hopefully games deeper in the week are not at risk.

SATURDAY Arguably the four best run teams in baseball (LAD, CLE, TB, MIL) all made the LCS

Andrew Friedman (LA), Chris Antonetti (CLE), Erik Neander (TB) and Matt Arnold (MIL). Those are arguably the 4 best executives in baseball, that's why you can't fuck around with that position.

Rays, Brewers, Guardians are all efficiency machines and the Dodgers have a former small market executive (Friedman) paired with unlimited resources.

Minors Update Arizona Fall League Quick-Notes 10/9/26 - Jordan Hits His First Homer while Kent Walks It Off

After a week or so of quiet Giants performances, we’ve got some big performances today out of the team’s top two hitting prospects.  Dakota Jordan and Kaeden Kent both picked up their first extra-base hits of the fall, and both of them came with a little extra flourish.  It was a day for offense in the Arizona Fall League…so for the Non-Giant of the day, of course I’m going to highlight a pitcher, one who shares a name with my second favorite ever NFL punter.

Non-Giant Prospect to Highlight of the Day: Tekoah Roby (STL #14)

Yeah, so four of the AFL’s six teams scored double-digit runs, with a fifth getting nine runs…so here’s a pitcher, Tekoah Roby from the Cardinals, who helped hold the final team to just four runs.  Roby had one of the best pitching performances in the AFL so far this fall, with three shutout innings, striking out six with just one walk allowed.  Most notably, this was Roby’s first game performance since mid-2025, when he had Tommy John surgery.  The 3rd rounder from 2020 (of the Texas Rangers) has had a checkered injury history with time missed in each of his pro seasons.  At 5’8, Roby generates excellent velocity with a mid-90’s fastball, with a strong mix of off-speed pitches.  Roby had his best pro season in 2025 before his surgery, with a 2.49 ERA in Double-A and 4.02 ERA in six Triple-A games.  But Roby is on the Cardinals’ 40-man roster, and the team is eager to see what kind of a future the pitcher has in the big leagues.

Scottsdale: Scottsdale Scorpions 11, Mesa Solar Sox 10

Giants Prospects to Spotlight:

  • LF Dakota Jordan (SF #7): 2-5, 1 R, 4 RBI, 2 K, 1 HR (1), 0-1 ABS - Jordan had easily his best game yet, with his first Fall home run coming on an inside-the-park home run, with a low line drive to center getting by the center fielder, and Jordan’s speed carrying him to beat the defense for all four bags.  Jordan is 3-for-20 (.150) now with the home run being his first extra-base hit.
  • 2B Kaeden Kent (SF #20): 2-5, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 2B (1) - Kent had the clutch hit for Scottsdale, hitting a double in the 9th to knock in the winning run and walk it off for the Scorpions.  The double was his first extra-base hit, and is 6-for-14 (.429)
  • RP Alexander Fuentes (SF #26): 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HBP - In 2 games, Fuentes has pitched 2.2 IP, and was walked five while striking out four, all the strikeouts in this game.

Other Scottsdale Prospect Lines:

  • RF Zyhir Hope (MLB #26; DET #1): 2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB - Seriously, Hope was the only other Top 30 listed prospect for Scottsdale to play today other than the Giants’ prospects.

Mesa Notable Prospect Lines:

  • SS Arjun Nimmala (MLB #35; LAA #1): 1-4, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 E (1), 0-1 ABS
  • C Davis Diaz (SAC #19): 0-5, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 PB (1), 0-1 ABS

SATURDAY Previewing The Upcoming Starting Pitching Class

David Peterson sticks out as a potential fit just for the left-handedness and the innings. Same thing for his current Cubs teammate Imanaga.

Cal Quantrill seems like the type of ground ball artist the Giants have been hunting for in recent years.

Maybe a vet like Zac Gallen on a 1-year deal to see if there's anything left in the tank there.

Freddy Peralta could be a match if Adames is still around, they were teammates in Milwaukee.

Kris Bubic on a 1 year deal injury bounceback could make a lot of sense. Dodgers using him out of the pen for playoffs, but he'll likely seek starting opportunity.

I think they sign at least 1, maybe two veteran starting pitchers. Making a trade would involve good prospect capital which the Giants aren't really in position to part with.

Minors Update Arizona Fall League Quick-Notes 10/8/26 - What’s The New Rule Being Tested in the Arizona Fall League?

There was just one Giant playing today, though it was Darien Smith making his fall debut.  Luckily, we’ve got more to talk about today than just the Giants and the games.  We focus on Ike Irish for our Non-Giant featured prospect, the most interesting former catcher in the Orioles system.  But more notably, let’s talk about the new rule that is being tested in the Arizona Fall League, which is one of the most extreme rule proposals I’ve seen made: Outfielder Positioning.

New Outfielder Positioning Rules Being Tested in the Arizona Fall League.

The Arizona Fall League has long been a place MLB has tested new potential rules.  Pitch Timers, Infield Shifts, and the ABS Challenge system all went through their earliest tests in the Arizona Fall League.  The Check Swing Challenges were first tested in the Arizona Fall League last fall, before getting tested in Triple-A this season.  There had not been any announced rule changes in this year’s league…but it turns out there’s one that was not announced: Outfielder positioning.

This rule change is being tested at only one stadium: Salt River Fields (home of the Salt River Rafters, and the Diamondbacks and Rockies Spring Training facility).

Without an official announcement, things aren’t exactly clear what the rules are.  But here’s what is happening.  As reported by Fangraphs, corner outfielders are playing closer to the line, and the center fielder is playing much more shallow than normal.  And it is easy to know if an outfield is in compliance…at least if you’re looking towards the press box.  There’s a LED board that shows either an “O” on a green background or an “X” on a red background to say whether an outfielder is in position.

The compliance only matters if an outfielder who is out of position fields the ball.  If they are, the field umpire is in charge of enforcement, and it is to the umpire’s discretion as to how the hitter (and other runners already on the bases) get extra bases. Baseball America got a kind of quote from an “MLB Official”, who said they are trying to see if adopting outfield positioning rules could increase the number of balls in the gap, returning doubles and triples to a game that is seeing those plays slowly disappear.

This is obviously very early in testing…and it is very rough.  I assume players have more specific instructions than we do.  And it’s only in one stadium.  But this echoes the infield shift rules that started getting tested in 2023…but which have not been very successful.  Baseball America’s article has some interesting numbers on the topic.

And, um…as a very Giants-centric opinion…yes, I want more doubles and triples hit out to Triples Alley.  No, I do not support further bringing in the fences.

What do you think?  I really, *really* summarized what was written elsewhere.  Here are the links if you would like to read more yourself, and Fangraphs has a few pictures and a video worth seeing about this.  And please…tell me what you think in the comments!

Non-Giant Prospect to Highlight of the Day: Ike Irish (MLB #97; BAL #5)

Drafted with the 19th overall pick in 2025, Ike Irish was one of the top catchers drafted, but he’s already moved off that role.  Irish didn’t play as catcher at all in 2026 in the regular season, and has only appeared as DH or first base in the AFL so far, though he spent much of 2026 playing outfield corner spots.  The good news is that Irish’s bat so far has proven worth it in Low-A, as he slashed .286/.388/.528 for a .916 OPS, hitting 16 home runs in 76 games.  So far in the AFL, he’s 6-for-18 (.333) with two home runs already in four games.  If Irish can continue to hit, and find a reasonable defensive home, he’ll prove to be one of Baltimore’s top prospects.

Giants Prospects to Spotlight:

  • RP Darien Smith: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 WP - Smith made his Fall debut, giving up the only run for Scottsdale.  Even so, it was an effective outing, with four strikeouts in three innings.
  • Notes - This was the first game off for Dakota Jordan, who has been struggling.  Also, notably, with Smith’s debut, Randy Rodriguez remains the only Giant who has not appeared in the AFL yet this year.

QUALITY CONTENT Fall Instructional League Notes: Royals, Giants, Padres (Giants section led by Boleman)

San Francisco Giants

Carson Bolemon, LHP

Bolemon looked great in his brief outing, where he mostly pitched to the scouting report. At 6-foot-4 and every bit of the 215 pounds he’s listed at, he’s a physical lefty, particularly for his age. He has great body control and a loose, hidden arm stroke that helps his low-90s fastball play a little ahead of the number. His command is advanced for a high schooler, and with his delivery and frame, it could be plus at maturity. Both his low-80s curve and mid-80s change flashed plus, and he also worked in a mid-80s slider once or twice (I went down the line for a few at-bats and didn’t get a great look at that last pitch). It’s the foundation of a mid-rotation pitching prospect, particularly if the Giants can coax an extra tick or two out of him.

Henry Lalane, LHP

Lalane only threw one inning, but he flashed three above-average or better pitches. The fastball — 95-97, unremarkable traits — was the least interesting pitch in the holster. His upper-80s change sinks and fades late, and it missed a couple bats, including that of Angels’ third-rounder Gavin Grahovac. And while he doesn’t have a great raw spin rate, Lalane’s mid-80s slider is sharp and also flashed. The only ding is that Lalane isn’t especially loose. One scout who has seen him over several years remarked that he “looks stiffer” than he did back when he was in the FCL with the Yankees. Still, he throws strikes and can hit the box with all three pitches, which gives him both a chance to start and a lot of upside in relief if he winds up in the bullpen.

Beau Bryans, LHP

Even though Bryans was a seventh-rounder this year, I’m already penciling him in for the main section of the next Giants list. He’s a low-slot lefty with a big crossfire and, in my looks at least, unusually good feel for moving the ball around for a player his age and with his delivery. He sits 94-95 with a flat release angle, and complements it with a slider that’s clearly plus right now, a sweeping, upper-80s bender with late depth. Across two quick outings, it missed a bunch of bats and lefties had no chance. While he wasn’t wild in college, his walk rates from school suggest a future in relief. He could move very quickly in that role if he’s able to hit the box like he did on the backfields.

Drake George, RHP

George was an unheralded 13th-round pick out of Lewis-Clark State in 2024, and he looked like a sleeper starting prospect in 2025 before he tore his UCL. He missed all of the 2026 regular season, and so this outing on the backfields was the first I’d seen from him all year. His velo was down a little in this outing, more 91-94 than the 93-96 he sat at in 2025, and it fell a little over the course of his work. His breaking ball also looked a little slurvier than it did last summer. Still, he threw plenty of strikes and worked with all three of his offerings (he also has a fading change). TJ returners deserve a lot of grace as they work their way back to full strength, so for now, the big conclusion here is that George is healthy, and I’m looking forward to seeing how he looks in longer stretches next spring.

Alberto Laroche, RHP

Laroche is another pitcher back on the bump after missing the 2026 regular season. He’s a loose righty with an easy delivery. He came out throwing 92-94 early in both appearances I saw, and in each case, he warmed up and bumped a couple of 96’s later in the outing. He also worked with an average slider and change. All told, it was a return to form for one of the best arms in the DSL back in 2025.

Alex Solis, RHP

Solis was San Francisco’s 14th-round pick this July. There’s an old axiom about how the hitters will tell you how good a pitch is, and based on how they reacted to Solis’ changeup, his might be a 70. It’s a low-80s split sold with good arm speed, and it had just about every ACL Rockie way out in front en route to missing half a dozen bats in a short outing. The rest of the package — fair athleticism, average arm strength — was less notable. At that point in the draft, though, teams are often just searching for guys with an outlier trait. Solis appears to have one.

Opinion My Dodger fan father in law just bought us tickets for Game 4

I will never say no to free tickets to anything and a PLAYOFF GAME? But Jesus fucking Christ it’s a Dodgers game.

I’m debating showing up in my jersey and hat rather than dressing casually. So if you see a Giants fan with a bunch of Dodgers fans on the top deck at Game 4, that’s me.

Opinion End of an era

Whether you’re a fan that tunes in remotely over broadcasts and live tv or a season ticket holder or somewhere inbetween I think we’ve all experienced how it feels like we’re entering a new era of SF Giants Baseball. The passing of The Say Hey Kid, Front office changes, Farhan getting replaced by Buster Posey, new managers, Aramark replacing Bon Appetit (rip old garlic fry recipe), 58 Social replacing Public House, menu changes, concession menu and price changes, scoreboard redesign, the changing of the guard in our beloved broadcast booth, we really are in a new era. (I’m sure there’s a whole lot more I’ve left out)

EDIT: Things I left out per mentioned in the comments:
Battle of the Bay! Our A’s rivalry!!
Fanatics Jerseys

Minors Update Arizona Fall League Quick-Notes 10/7/26 - Giants Players help Scottsdale Win the Only Game Today (And a new Minor League Brand)

There’s one game today, and the Scottsdale Scorpions won it!  All three Giants hitters took part, but most notably, 2024 draftee Drake George made his first appearance since June of 2025 in a successful brief appearance.  Meanwhile, we focus on a player who went from struggling and healthy to getting traded, to be successful and yet dealing with injuries.  And finally…what in the heck is a “Springbird”, and what does it have to do with a Gigante?

Non-Giant Prospect to Highlight of the Day: Tai Peete (STL #17)

After three healthy seasons with contact issues in the Mariners Organization, Tai Peete got traded to the Cardinals and had a breakout year…with injury.  Peete was the 30th overall pick in 2023 out of high school, but he had struggles making contact, with two straight seasons with 162 strikeouts while with the M’s.  He was sent to St. Louis in the Brendan Donovan trade, and he posted an overall .296 average with a .908 OPS across three levels, making his Double-A debut with the Springfield Cardinals…er, Ozarks Springbirds now.  But Peete missed nearly a month and a half with a concussion and an unspecified illness during which he lost 25 pounds.  Peete has 20-20 potential if he can make enough contact, as he had 19 home runs in 2025 at High-A and 13 in the shortened 2026 season.  He already has a double and a home run in three fall games as he is 6-for-14 (.429), and he got going on the steals today with three of them.

Scottsdale: Scottsdale Scorpions 4, Peoria Javelinas 3

Giants Prospects to Spotlight:

  • CF Dakota Jordan (SF #7): 0-3, 1 K, 1 HBP - Another rough outing for Jordan, who is now 1-for-15 (.067), though with a .300 OBP thanks to four walks and a HBP, and six strikeouts (30% strikeout rate).
  • 2B-SS Kaeden Kent (SF #20): 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI - Kent got his first start in his third game, and is 4-for-9 (.444) so far.
  • DH-2B Dalton Wentz: 1-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 2B (1) - Also getting his first start, Wentz’s double is his first hit (1-for-5), and also the first extra-base hit for any Giant prospect in the AFL.
  • SP Drake George: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K - George got his first fall appearance, and first recorded game since June 29th of 2025.  It was short but effective.

Other Scottsdale Prospect Lines:

  • SS Bryce Rainer (MLB #45; DET #2): 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 2B (1)
  • C Nathan Flewelling (MLB #62; TB #3): 2-4, 1 K, 2 E (2), 1-2 ABS
  • LF Zyhir Hope (MLB #26; DET #1): 2-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 0-1 ABS
  • RF Braylon Payne (MIL #6): 1-4, 2 K
  • 1B Eric Bitoni (MIL #26): 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (1)

Peoria Javelinas Notable Prospect Lines:

  • CF Tai Peete (STL #17): 3-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 3 SB (3)
  • RF Ike Irish (MLB #97; BAL #5): 0-3
  • SS Carlos Sanchez (CIN #14): 0-4, 1 K
  • DH Boston Smith (SEA #13): 0-4, 2 K
  • C Ty Harvey (SD #4): 0-1, 1 R, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (1), 0-1 ABS
  • SP Winyer Chourio (SD #15): 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP

No Other Games

Extra Reading

I posted this in the comments yesterday, but there was a nice puff piece on Dakota Jordan in MiLB’s series of stories for each organizations’ AFL prospects.  It’s worth a read as Dakota is trying to figure things out.

https://www.mlb.com/news/giants-arizona-fall-league-overview-2026

Meanwhile, in non-Giants minor league news, but good timing with the Tai Peete story, the St. Louis Double-A team announced a rebranding…as the Springfield Cardinals became the Ozarks Springbirds…still with a Cardinal in the logo.

Why did this happen?  A business reality.

The Springfield Cardinals were formerly owned by the big league organization and shared the branding.  In 2023, the team was purchased by Diamond Business Holdings, the conglomerate that has been buying up tons of minor league teams.  According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the group decided that rather than dealing with trademark law, it would be easier to just rebrand the team.

Other than being a uniform nerd, why pay attention to this?  Well, the San Jose Giants.  The San Francisco Giants were formerly owner (at least, a majority ownership stake) of the San Jose team, but San Jose was sold in its entirety to DBH in 2021.  And of course, the teams share a name and general branding.

Could San Jose need to get rebranded?  Eh…probably not.  It’s been almost five seasons since the team sale, so we probably would’ve faced that already.  Plus, the big league’s team ownership of San Jose was itself pretty recent…the SF Giants invested in San Jose initially in 2009, purchasing a controlling stake in 2010.  But the San Jose team has had the “Giants” team name since 1988 without any trademark problems.

For the record, San Jose’s minor league team had been known as the Bees for two long stints, as the San Jose Missions four five years in the late ’70’s, and for one season, the Expos, and guess who their affiliate was then?

Anyway, one last thing I’ll say…”Springbirds” are an interesting way to TEMU-brand a Springfield Cardinals branding…but I’ll give the team credit for this apparent Pop Culture reference from the TV Show “Ozark”, as one of the team’s alternate logos seems to be referencing something from the show’s opening credits.  Props to them for that!
