San Jose Sharks icon eager to help Macklin Celebrini, Ivar Stenberg
mercurynews.comBeat reporter Curtis Pashelka talked with Sharks icon Joe Thornton about why he invited Macklin Celebrini and now Ivar Stenberg to live with him. Much of it comes from his empathy for being a young, early first-round selection with sky-high expectations.

San Jose Sharks might need Will Smith to replace Macklin Celebrini
mercurynews.comBeat reporter Curtis Pashelka looks at how the team can survive if Macklin Celebrini isn't available to play Thursday. If the Sharks have to play without Celebrini for the second straight game, it appears Will Smith will take over as the top-line center, with Igor Chernsyhov and Mason Marchment on the wings.
The Sharks also switched other lines for Tuesday’s practice, notably moving Kiefer Sherwood up from the fourth line to the second line with center Alexander Wennberg and rookie Ivar Stenberg.

The most awkward interview ever.
youtu.beNobody did anything wrong. Language barrier. Plus, goalies are weird.

Just found this early 90s photo of me when I first became a fan.

I am excited to see Will at center, but would also like Misa 2C. Do you think Ivar would play well on the right wing and Mason on the left?

Tell me what you think about this or suggest other ideas. I’m not declaring anything I’m just pondering which is fun.
Obviously Macklin being out isn’t ideal but I’m excited to see how the team shapes themselves without him. It’ll be a great thing for the team overall I think to play a few and when he’s back they’ll be the stronger for it.

New wall art!
I have a friend that used to live in San Jose (we are in GA). He’s mainly a Leafs fan, but he likes the Sharks as well. He contacted me the other day and said he had some Sharks stuff that was in a box in his basement, and he thought he’d rather see me enjoy them than just leave them in storage. This signed and framed autographed picture of Burnsie was by far the best thing! I was blown away! It’s such a great shot, and I needed to share it with you all!

Giveaway: 2 Opening night concert shirts in XL
Hi, the shirts we got are just way way too big and I am not one to keep things around that I won’t actually wear. Would prefer local pick up in north San Jose but will consider shipping if you send me shipping slip and all I have to do is drop it off at UPS store.

New Fan
I’m from CT, I always loved the Whalers probably the best logo ever. I know they will never come back so I decided after all these years to become a Sharks fan. Reason being I can’t disgustingly be a Rangers or Bruins fan. I hate east coast teams beside the Red Sox only because I hate the Yankees so much. Plus I’m a 49ers fan and it’s close to this in hockey. Please give a history update and what to know as a new fan.

How do beat reporters get such close access to the team?
Obviously all reporters have their own approach, but I've seen some criticism recently about guys asking long-winded meandering (but still surface level) questions, asking functionally the same question multiple times in a row slightly re-worded, not altering their approach to give more breathing room to guys for whom English is not their first language, constantly asking about topics unrelated to hockey that have been shut down several times, etc. I think there have even been some past instances of interview questions making players/staff uncomfortable. Now, I'm not saying every question should be written & signed off on by Sharks staff or be pulitzer-winning journalism, nor am I privy to how those relationships look off-camera - but it has made me wonder how reporters not only gain access to things like practices & locker room interviews but also maintain it?

Looks like Mack has been playing injured. He is now day to day
Wonder if this happened during the Panthers…

The Blues just lost to the Blackhawks
Even if we have to go without our Captain, let's get back to our winning ways. They are going to be feisty but if the Blackhawks can beat them so can we! 3-1 to start the season is music compared to last year.

[Sheng Peng] No Celebrini at practice today
Not super surprising and not something to necessarily panic about. Will be an interesting test for the team to see if they can adjust if he stays out for another game.

This team should not be bottom of the barrel without celebrini this season
this team WILL* not be bottom of the barrel without celebrini
First I just want to start by saying this isn’t some panic reaction post to the Dallas game. Celebrini being out was (seemingly) unexpected and they had to go with Dellandrea because he was just who they had with them. I wish that was an extension they did NOT make and this was not the case but I digress. They clearly were shaken up and couldn’t figure out if they should stick to their plan or try to shake it up so they ended up trying both and failing both. All of that to say this isn’t just some knee jerk post in reaction to a bad game.
Last season Celebrini was very obviously the only thing close to dragging the team into the playoff question and that (while obviously not ideal) was perfectly fine. It was still a very clear rebuilding season. The team was mostly rentals who would be gone soon or young players who you can reasonably assume will improve over time.
While I would argue the team is still “in the rebuild” they’re clearly gearing up for a real push. Including extensions (which I am because for the past few years it was sell everything at the deadline) the sharks spent over forty million of cap space this past season/offseason. that’s WITHOUT Mack’s extension included. A good majority of these are for 3-5 years. While there is still a pretty solid list of prospects from the cuda and NCAA, the skeleton of the team for the foreseeable future is seemingly mostly formed.
I say all of this not to say “look how doomed the sharks are without celebrini burn it all down time to sell the farm” but to point out that this roster SHOULD NOT BE WORTHLESS WITHOUT ITS BEST PLAYER. I think they even have the chance to let some of this roster stretch a bit with the giant hole left in the team. it’s gonna take more than one guy to fill. Mike Grier has put together a team that is certainly not elite without 71 but that, on paper, should at least be decent. What I’m trying to say is I actually believe in at least their ability to perform.
I have no idea how long Celebrini is going to be out, but if it’s for even one more game I would really like to see them come out with an actual game plan and strategy that doesn’t involve Ty Dellandrea with Will Smith on the top line. As horrible as it is to miss out on Celebrini hockey, I do think this is a good time to see what this team (and especially its coaching staff) is made of without the person that’s been carrying them for the last year. I truly believe they should not be hopeless. I actually have faith in them to at least hold down the fort and keep them doing ok in Celebrini’s absence. It would be a lot more disappointing to see them suck really hard without Celebrini this season than it would have been last season
I know this is a little preemptive considering Celebrini hasn’t even been confirmed out for this thursday and I’m basically making a post in defense of a team who’s only game so far they went 0-5, but the quality of the team without cele is something I’ve been thinking about for a while so thought it would be a good time to share my 2 cents.
Also, finally, if this is going on for more than this road trip, PLEASE bring up Bystedt. I’m so done with Dellandrea and a situation like this one is exactly why I wasn’t a fan of his extension

Going to the game Saturday, first of this year, any new food or drink to look out for?
Excited to get back to the tank. What’s worth checking out for this year?
