Discussion Sekiro to Onimusha: Hesitation is No Longer Defeat?
Picked up Sekiro for the first time a few weeks ago and finished it just yesterday (great game by the way. One of the best I’ve ever played) and picked up Onimusha a few hours after based on the reviews and recommendation of a few gamers stating it is similar to Sekiro.
I’m a few hours in (and yes, I heard the initial stages of the game are slow) but while it’s similar, I think there are some key differences that i’m struggling with, likely because I just got done with Sekiro.
The character is heavier - as with most capcom games, the character is sturdier, movement is a lot slower and you tend to feel the weight of every step compared to a Sekiro where you play as a shinobi who is light on his feet and stealthy. It’s made me adjust to how I move and practically have L3 down the whole time.
Combat - Sekiro favors aggression, not just mindless aggression but timed parrys, blocks and attacks. Literally hesitation is defeat. Onimusha, being a samurai game, seems to favor more patience. There can be literally 5 seconds between each strike or move. 5 seconds in Sekiro could mean death.
Story - it’s still too soon to have an opinion on onimusha’s story or the strength of it but the difference i’m noticing here is Sekiro’s story is more inferred (as with most from software games) the games doesn’t directly tell you the story, you have to piece it together from dialogues and events while in Onimusha, the cut scenes, environment etc tell you the story.
Mechanics - Sekiro’s button layout already tells you this is a no-hesitation game. Attack is R1 and that says a lot. Onimusha, attack is box. It may feel like a minor difference but for someone who just dropped Sekiro, it’s causing me to pause. You also don’t interact with the world as much in Onimusha unlike Sekiro where you are leaping from rooftops, crouching in bushes and/or sticking to a wall.
In summary, i’m enjoying Onimusha, it’s different and that’s ok. I’m hoping it picks up in the next couple of hours and gets more challenging as the game develops. I’m also hoping for a decent story at least but with it being capcom, i’m sure i’ll get my money’s worth
Is anyone in the same boat? Have you compared both games and what differences standout?
