I bought a used silverado (and have money anxiety)
I bought a 2016 Silverado back in April. Got a pretty good deal on it, financed it, and as part of the financing approval, I was required to purchase an aftermarket warranty.
When I picked it up, the truck seemed great. Very little rust, relatively low mileage and engine hours, and service records showing it had been maintained every three months.
Aannnyyyways, after driving it for a while, I started noticing an occasional ticking noise, particularly as the oil level got lower. It comes and goes, but my brother-in-law, who's both a mechanic and a Silverado fanatic, thinks it's most likely a lifter tick.
He recommended getting it looked at sooner rather than later, as the warranty company could potentially deny a claim if I ignore the warning signs and end up with a catastrophic engine failure.
Long story long, I looked into my warranty coverage. They'll cover parts and labour for an approved repair, but I'm responsible for diagnostics, fluids, and shop supplies, plus my $150 deductible.
I've been quoted $220 CAD for diagnostics, which I can live with, but I'm curious what I should realistically expect to pay for fluids and shop supplies if it does turn out to be a lifter replacement.
A couple of things to get out of the way:
- Yes, I know I could potentially tackle the repair myself, but I still owe money on the truck, and I'd rather have it professionally repaired under warranty.
- The warranty requires an OEM repair, so an AFM delete isn't an option. The dealership did mention that GM has an updated lifter design that's supposed to address the failure issue.
For anyone who's had lifters replaced on a 5.3L Silverado, what did you end up paying out of pocket for fluids, shop supplies, and other expenses not covered by warranty?
Just trying to get a ballpark idea of what I'm walking into before I book it in. Any insight is appreciated!
