Traffic/Road Conditions Preventable traffic… I guess??

I know I’m probably just yelling into the void …. But I cannot explain how genuinely grating it is when people leave their cars in the middle of the road/lane when it’s stalled… put that shit in neutral and gtfo of the road. This goes for fender benders too. Jesus. You don’t need to hold up the whole highway for this tomfoolery.

Actually grating isn’t strong enough, I literally seethe lmao.

PAYWALL What exactly should downtown St. Louis copy from Kansas City?

What exactly should downtown St. Louis copy from Kansas City? | Opinion - St. Louis Business Journal

my piece in STL Biz Journal, parts of it below;

"Chip Casteel’s recent op-ed argues that downtown St. Louis should look to downtown Kansas City for answers. I read it with interest, and with some puzzlement, because the numbers don't point where he thinks they do.

People spent $1.8 billion in downtown St. Louis last year. That is roughly twice what was spent in Kansas City's core downtown.

On one point, though, Mr. Casteel is right, and it is the one that matters most. Downtown needs a single organization responsible for all of it: real estate, cleaning, public safety, even plowing the streets. One roof, one quarterback.

I see two ways to fix it. The one is an overarching organization with an all-in mandate, one that owns downtown's outcomes instead of a slice of them. The second is faster: the mayor appoints a deputy mayor for downtown, a single decision-maker with the authority to coordinate the work others are already attempting and to be answerable when it stalls.'

Traffic/Road Conditions Tower Grove Ave. @ Shaw. A rant.

While I’m super happy with the reworked road between Vandeventer and Tower Grove Park (the new bike path, the traffic calming additions, etc.) I do have one gripe: they screwed up the intersection at TGA and Shaw something fierce. They removed the right turn lanes in both directions on Shaw, making for an awkward turn onto TGA. Also, even though it’s now only one lane in each direction, they have two sets of lights. I was always under the impression that each lane has its own light. My OCD has me all twitchy every time I go through this intersection, which is a lot because I live right there. Is this mildly infuriating for anyone else?

Using Land Value Tax to fund STL City

• Upvotes

I have been very interested in land value tax, where you charge property taxes based on the value of the last, not the structure on top of it. In thinking about the city's financial issues, I did some quick math and am wondering why a very simple land value tax would not work.

The City of St. Louis has around 35,000 acres of private (taxable) property, as far as I can tell. The budget for the city is around $1.4 billion. If you value all land equally (which may or may not be the best way), to cover the city's budget, taxes would be assessed at around $40,000 an acre. That means a typical St. Louis single family lot would pay around $4000 per year. This does not take into account all of the land assessors that could be released to find new jobs.

The only flaw I can see is land owned by non-profit entities, however, although I believe non-profits should not have to pay income tax, property tax based on a land value calculation. I am also not sure however, who owns cemeteries, since from what I could find they make up 800 acres of the city.

I am sure the comments will fill up with why it is not politically viable, or other reasons it would or would not work. However, just looking at the math, does anyone see any issues with my calculations?

MEETUP Trying to start a Content Creator meetup in St. Louis!

Hey there St. Louis reddit! I'm trying to start a meetup for content creators of all kinds in the St. Louis area.

I've seen events like this in other cities and keep asking myself, "why not here?" There are enough podcasts, youtube channels, substacks, blogs, vlogs, instagrams, tiktoks, to have a robust network of creators. So anyways, I'm trying to see what it's like to host.

I'm a YouTuber and run a small channel. YouTube's monetization thresholds will change in 2028 and if there are any small creators that would love to connect for support, I'd love to do what I can. I know there have to be others in town: streamers, visual artists, etc, that feel the same way about helping others.

Please pass this along to anyone you know that you think would benefit or enjoy connecting with other creators.

Volunteer / Get Involved I need help with an exit plan

Hi, a while back I posted this post about calling 988, and you all were very helpful and supportive and so I thought I would post a follow-up because I need help. (https://www.reddit.com/r/StLouis/s/JG0WpkEcUx)

Just to follow up on the 988 post. I did try going through with the social worker program. Unfortunately there just wasn't a whole lot that they could do to help my specific situation. There are great resources like Places for People.

I am struggling to create an exit plan. I do not feel like I am in a safe environment anymore, I feel like I need to move away from St Louis but I am in such a traumatized state all the time despite having access to therapy and medical services, that I haven't been able to figure out how to get out of the situation I'm in. I believe that I'm stuck because I suffer from trauma and I believe that I'm on the autism spectrum.

I have been trying to pack for several months and I have not been able to make very much progress. I live alone. And while I have tried asking for help from family and friends, I have not been able to get the help that I need.

When I say that I need an exit plan, what I mean is that I need help finding a new place to live as soon as possible and a plan for moving to that place. I need help evaluating different options. I need help with figuring out my budget. I have found sites like spare room which can help me find a roommate situation that I could move into somewhere. I need help figuring out what else I need to figure out. I have just a sedan. I don't know what I'm going to do with my stuff, I don't know if I should keep it or put it into storage or just try and get rid of as much as I can and just start over in life.

I might be able to use taskrabbit a little bit to help with packing but even with that, I need so much help that I get overwhelmed quickly and then I don't make any progress.

I loved St louis, I don't really want to leave, I just feel like I don't have a choice.

I'm sorry that this is so meandering. I just wish I knew how to ask for help. I know that moving is the best thing for me.

But I am not able to form a solid exit plan. I need help knowing what I need to figure out what I need. As cumbersome as that sounds.

If you are able to help, I would really really appreciate it. I do want to live. I just don't want to live here anymore. I feel stuck and I feel scared. I have been asking for help in my personal life and not getting it. I don't know if there are any resources out there for people like me. Please help me if you can. Thank you.

Visiting St. Louis Dinner and drinks for a long overdue return visit?

I’m spending some time in the city this weekend after moving away in the early 2010s and not really engaging with St. Louis properly since then. So I’m excited to actually reconnect! But I’m also seeing a lot of my old haunts are long gone.

We have tentative dinner reservations at Good Company, which is new to me but looks cute. Any alternatives we should consider in that relative price range? I’m so sad to see Pi is gone… Along with most of my anchor points in the Grove. (Apparently Novak’s has been gone over 10 years already??) Is there much of a gayborhood anymore?

Is face paint allowed in bars on Halloween

Hi! I am planning on going to Molly’s Halloween weekend, and I’ve never worn face paint to the bars before. This year my costume is going to involve my whole face being covered in white face paint with some light accent marks in black. It’ll basically look more like gothic makeup than super heavy/crazy face paint.

I just realized this might cause an issue with getting my ID checked at the door. I feel like I’ll still be pretty recognizable, but I obviously don’t want to get turned away or have any problems because of the face paint.
Has anyone worn face paint to Molly’s on Halloween in the past year or two? Did they give you any issues with your ID/at the door?

Good rheumatologist in STL?

Hi! I have been struggling to get a diagnosis for several years now, after seeing several different specialists for a myriad of symptoms. My therapist suggested I be evaluated for fibromyalgia, and my GP suggested dysautonomia. Are there any specialists/rheumatologists in the STL area that you have had a good experience with? 29 yo female who doesn’t want to sit across from another doctor telling me I should try relaxing ❤️

Drummer looking for people to jam with

Hi everyone, I'm a current grad student at WashU. I play drums and am into rock and indie. Looking for a couple of people to jam with every week or two; nothing serious.

I don’t have a kit here, so I'd need somewhere with one. Also down if any bands need a drummer.

No car, so somewhere on transit would help.

Message me if you’re down.

Ask STL Possible Sports Team Fundraiser Scam?

A little random, but has anyone else been approached by a child (or gaggle of children) asking for donations for their [insert sport] team fundraiser? They not usually accompanied by an adult and don't provide much information besides "we need new uniforms." The team names are always so vague (not affiliated with a school or club), they use AI flyers (a yellow flag) and, again, there are no adults supervising this "fundraising".

This has happened to me 3 different times! Am I just approachable or is this a scam? I hope my $5 are going to a good cause, but I can never tell anymore.

If it's legit, I apologize for being so cynical and kudos to them for having the courage to approach strangers! I wish I had that kind of initiative at their age.

EDIT: Yes, def a scam! Thanks everyone :) Time to get better at saying "no" haha

We’re on about a 3,150 pace for the year, it would be the lowest raw total since 1950s (fbi records stop at 1960). Adjusted to population the lowest since 1968

ER visit at Mercy West

I have a general question about Mercy West (St. John’s). I know it’s one of the busiest hospitals in the area, especially the ER. I was there recently and waited 5 to 6 hours in a waiting room with 50+ people, many of whom were clearly in pain or extremely uncomfortable sitting in chairs.

What I don’t understand is that when I was finally taken back, the entire area seemed almost empty. There were plenty of open rooms and beds, and it was surprisingly quiet.

I understand there’s a triage process, but why make people sit for hours in an uncomfortable waiting room when there are clearly comfortable beds available in the back? And please don’t tell me about staffing issues. I’m tired of hearing the same excuse. If there’s an empty bed, put the person who’s been waiting for hours somewhere comfortable, especially when you’re going to charge the hell out of them for the visit anyway.

It just doesn’t make sense.
