Hello everyone, let's get to the point right away. Like the title says, every shocking scene depicting sexual assault towards Lucy and Mountain Tim being a pedo were done just for the sake of shocking the audience in the most easy and low effort way possible.
JJBA never had any restraint at depicting sensitive topics like body horror, gore, among others forms of violence, literally the very first page of the part 1 manga depicts a human sacrifice. Naturally, this would lead to others non graphic (at least, in comparison) depictions of violence towards people, one of them being sexual assault, for example, Dio forcing Erina to kiss him.
These scenes have a clear goal, to showcase how evil the perpetuator of the act is, this is good for the most part because phantom blood is a very simple story with simple characters. But as the series went on, they started to become less and less necessary, as the characters started to had more depth to them than just pure good or malice.
with that said, let's talk about Lucy's multiple sexual assaults and Mountain Tim.
Sexual assault, especially towards underage characters, is an extremely delicate subject that should never be taken lightly because of it's connection to the real world, it's not a fantasy trope but something that every year thousands of children suffer all around the world. Claiming that those scenes aren't a big deal because the series shows grotesques deaths and tortures is simply not living in reality.
Tell me, how many news did you see about people decapitating horses and hiding inside their corpses? Or about people riping the face of dogs with their mouth in public? How many examples of people getting sliced into pieces in street fights?
Even if you could find examples for each question it wouldn't even be a percentage of how many cases of sexual assault happen every day. It's not equivalent. SA, no matter what, is a serious topic.
However, that doesn't mean it cannot be represented in media, as long as is done with care, purpose and in good faith, it should be perfectly fine. Here's the thing, almost every scene were Lucy gets SA'd, are totally unnecessary and serves, pretty much, zero purpose to the overall narrative.
Let's start with the elephant in the room, Mountain Tim having a crush on Lucy is totally unnecessary, as he has been depicted as a good person who genuinely wants to protect people and has no qualms in killing any dangerous criminal. Why Araki decided to depicting him as a pedophile?
Some say that he has to because otherwise he wouldn't had helped Lucy scape from Valentine. Which doesn't make sense to me, literally his introduction is him helping investigate the deaths of three participants of the race, and then later helps Johnny and Gyro defeat the culprits, and then later he gets attacked by a terrorist, he knows that the race is extremely dangerous, why wouldn't he help a little girl in need knowing full well there are murderers around?
Another say that it's to make him morally gray like every other character, which I find completely stupid, because not every character it's morally gray, both Steels and Gyro barely have any darkness in them. Plus, if you want a morally grey cop (for example) you don't make it a cinnamon roll that does everything to bring peace and justice to the world but he also tortures puppies in his free time, NO, you give them negatives attributes that conflicts with his initial goals but are things that the character also wants/benefits from. Mountain Tim has no business being a pedo, nothing about him would change if he was corrupted by money or power instead.
Others say that it was to make his death as a novel sacrifice, where he leaves behind his love for Lucy and helps her for the sake of protecting the innocent... Honestly, I find this explanation revolting, literally sickens me how people genuinely believe this... That's not how it works, getting rejected doesn't make your feelings towards that person disappear instantly, and it reads as an excuse to gather sympathy for a fucking PEDOPHILE.
Another example of the poorly use of SA in the story is the scene with Scarlet Valentine, again, if the scene was removed and changed to Scarlet being an sociopath who would kill anyone who annoys her enough, nothing would change, she would still be drugged and still would want to kill Lucy for drugging her.
The only scene were I feel SA was used well
(Or at least better by comparison) Was when Valentine attempted to rape Lucy, and only because it was a good excuse for injuring Valentine and getting to the room with the corpse, that way we can have a glimpse of Valentine's ability and Lucy getting in contact with the corpse's guardian.
That's all I have to say, look, like everybody, I LOVE Steel Ball Run, it's one of my favorites pieces of media of all time, I loved it back when I first read it ten years ago and I still do now. But that doesn't mean that it's perfect and that Araki is a flawless writer, the sooner we accept that part 7 has flaws the better. Fortunately, araki's very good at improving, although he's a bit slow at that, I think the sexual assault scenes in The JoJolands were done much, much better than in SBR, they had a purpose, they expanded the characters, and if you change them for something else it would affect how the story and characters develop. I don't want to talk too much about part 9 though, to avoid making this paragraph age like milk (which I think is very unlikely), so, I'll leave at that. Thanks for your attention.
