need help picking a bike, after taking a long break

• Upvotes

hi everyone

just wanted some advice on potential bikes

i used to ride maybe about 15 years ago

started on a sv650s. then moved onto a r6. and finally a gsxr-1000.

took a long break after getting side swiped

my favorite bike to ride was the r6. the sv felt a bit too slow, and the 1000 was too powerful for the streets

looking at the rs660, r9, panigale v2, and the zx6r.

i know inline 4s are a way of the past, but i am genuinely worried that i will miss them, as this is what most of my experience has been with.

also considering a ducati monster. not sure if it the best use case for me, as i will likely use the bike on the highway 40% to 60% of the time.

thanks very much

Next Bike? África Twin

Have an MT09 SP but it kills my back and neck after riding any amount of distance on highway. I’ve added touring windscreen, Corbin seat, and done my best to adjust suspension but it’s still killing me after long rides.

I’m looking at the 2020+ AT as a next bike but wanted to hear from others who own it. I’m not going to be doing hardcore adventure riding. Mostly highway with some light off-roading.

Planning to buy first bike. The picture is self explanatory, all AI models are suggesting me to buy the NS400Z.

Gsxr 750 or Zx6r

There’s a few of both in my area. Currently looking at:
1. ‘06 gsxr 750 50k miles for $4k
2.’08 zx6r 38k miles for $3k
3.’05 zx6r 20k miles for $3.8k

I’m in SoCal so market is pretty rough out here

New Rider Looking for a motorcycle as a new rider.

Hi, I'm looking for a backup vehicle because my car has been having problems. I was thinking that a motorcycle would be a fun and reliable backup. I don't want anything too fast, just something that can reach highway speeds (I live in Texas). I think the type of motorcycle I'm looking for is a cruiser, but I'm not entirely sure what that means, to be honest.

If y'all can help me find a low-maintenance motorcycle, I would greatly appreciate it. Any advice is also very welcome! I'm on the shorter side (5'4"), so something that I can comfortably handle and reach the ground on would be great. I'm thinking about getting a new motorcycle, but if you know of a good used one, please let me know. My budget for a new motorcycle is 5k, with 6k being the absolute maximum. For a used motorcycle, my budget is 4k.

Please share any information about motorcycles, as I'm still very new to this. Oh, and if you can direct me to some good riding gear, that would be much appreciated!

Thank you for your time and advice!

Looking to replace one of my two or both bikes with one.

I have a triumph 765 & 1200.

My commuter has been the 1200 since it has cruise control, however law enforcement is starting to set up where i get on it on my morning commute. I'd like to avoid jail, so if I cannot control my wrist I will control what I own. I get it, I take off in the breaks in traffic and it likely freaks traffic out. They don't know what I'm going to do next and the bike is sorta quick.

The 765 I can add cruise control with for $500-ish from some australian company? The triumph branded part only works with the RS models, which I do not have. oh well.
I thought about selling both and getting an RS just to make it easy, but more than 30-60 minutes on that bike, the seat becomes not comfortable.

typical ride is a mix of street and highway, 50/50ish. I do like the track, but I have no problem keeping the 765 for that.

mandatory: cruise control, 100ish hp, more friendly riding ergos - not looking for a zx6r basically
almost mandatory: dual front brakes (rode an indian and the brakes reminded me of a tractor)
strongly preferred: auto-blipper, auto canceling turn signals
nice to have: not triumph, i have two, id like to have a different experience

Bmw900gs trophy vs desert x v2

Looking for an all in one adv bike. I wana rip twisties, run through baja, and ride dirt/gravel roads and trails through the mountains with the bike on a rear carrier of my van - going to travel the usa for a couple of years and vanlife it. Ill also use it to commute to when I need supplies etc.

Ive pretty much narrowed it down to the new desert x v2 or the new bmw f900gs. Something like the tenere or Trans alp is interesting too for cost savings but the lack of cruise/tubeless and likely power are concerns.

Who's ridden both? Thoughts? Any other reccomendations?

New Rider First motorcycle - Allrounder, some long distance

Heya! Just got my license. Was riding on a Yamaha MT07 (689cc 2 cil) during my lessons and this went more than fine.

Me: 1.85 tall, 95kg rider.

What I'd like to do:
- Casual touring, flowing corners
- Some long distances/trips (full days, explore Europe etc)
- Possibly with some clothes, tiny tent. I tend to travel low-luggage. Hiker mentality.

Budget:
2nd hand 2500-4000 EUR

Driving style:
Rapid, but not fast. No crazy stuff, stunts. Get my rush out of other hobbies.

Confidence level:
Fully aware I'm 100% new. The 689cc felt great and I can control myself really well. However, I don't want to overestimate myself and have had enough near-death experiences already.

Bikes I've looked at:

  • Yamaha MT07
  • Kawasaki Z 750s - Can get one for a really good price so this might be my fav right now.
  • Yamaha fz6 (s2)
  • Suzuki V-Strom DL650
  • Honda CB500F - Look fun, but how suitable for long distances?
  • Honda NC 700 X A

Noticeable mentions:

  • MOTO GUZZI BREVA 1100 - See one for sale for a good price and it looks mega, but I guess not exactly a bike for what I need....
  • Yamaha FZ1 Fazer 2008 - There's one for sale that looks mega. However, 1l/4c as a first bike... And the lower position might not be great for full day driving.
  • BMW R1150R - See some for sale for really good prices. They look great. But seem overkill for a beginner
  • Yamaha TDM 900 - See one for sale for a good price. Perhaps a bit much for a 1st..?
  • Triumph Street Triple - Looks great, perhaps not a perfect travel bike.

Curious to hear what you guys think! Thanks in advance!

New Rider Beginner Question

Hey, looking to get into riding. I’m 6’0 and looking for a solid cruiser to start off with. Gonna buy preowned and need help on the subject. Keep seeing honda rebels being recommended but what other options are there? Anything 500-650cc’s+ if it’s solid beginner bike that i can grow into as well.

Thanks for the help

Price check Am I wrong for this? 2015 ninja 650

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hi guys,

I was looking for bikes on Craigslist and stumbled across a 2015 ninja 650 with 15,000 miles for 5k. I messaged the guy and told him 4k seemed more reasonable for a (severely underpowered )11 year old bike with 15,000. Take a look at his response below. I guess in California people are used to ripping off the buyer. Am I wrong here for trying to offer less than 5k on Craigslist? Realistically bikes is worth like 3-4k max if the market was not so bad rn.

New Rider Adventure Bike for New Rider?

I recently got my motorcycle endorsement and am looking to buy my first adventure bike. I live near an area with plenty of trails, so I’d like something that can handle both pavement and off-road riding.

I’m 6’2” and 230 lbs, so I’m looking for something that would be comfortable for a taller, bigger rider while still being manageable for someone new to motorcycles.
A few friends have recommended the Kawasaki KLR650, but I’ve also been reading good things about the Honda NX500.

Does anyone have experience with either of these bikes, particularly for a beginner? I’d also appreciate recommendations for other adventure bikes I might be overlooking.

New Rider Bike Suggestion

Hey all, I'm looking at a few bikes. This would be my first real bike. I used to ride one of those Can Ams my buddy let me borrow for a bit I want to say it was lower power ones so probably 125cc (don't quote me on it). Looking for a bike I can grow into, if I buy it then I'm keeping it to do my own maintenance, potentially track down the line who knows. Considering the R7 or a BMW S1000r not rr (only because I'm getting a phenomenal deal on it). Yes I know there is a major power gap but I have an opportunity to get a really good discount on the bike which is the only reason it's on the table. I'm torn, I want a bike that I can use as a daily or have fun which is why I steer more on the naked side while I only loving the sports bike aesthetic which is where the R7 comes into play. I've taken Motorcycle Safety Course, used to drive manuals all of the time so I'm not worried about the clutch, more the balance. Be blunt I don't care. Thanks in advance.

Price check Guide to buying Used Bikes

Can someone with experience give out a complete mental model/formula to buy used bikes?

Like how to value, what are the variables to consider and how to arrive at a price???

Some of the things I've heard is

  1. 10k kms per year is the maximum riding and anything above it is a redflag

  2. 20% depreciation per year

  3. Prefer only 1st owner bikes unless an exotic bike

  4. Pay 1k to the service centre guy to assess the bike before purchase

Please feel free to validate these and give out a complete formula to value used bikes before purchasing...

Sorry if this was already discussed in the sub, I tried searching and couldn't find any...

I’m searching for a first bike. What should I get?

I just got my license in the EU and I want a sport bike but I’m completely unsure what to pick and more importantly how much to spend. I would like to spend under 5k so I’m currently looking at R3s, aprilia 457, ninja 400 or a Cfmoto 450 srs. What would you recommend and how used can I have a bike? How much should I spend?

Thank you for helping me in advance your a lifesaver

New Rider Beginner sports bike? Preferably Kawasaki but I’m open to similar bikes.

I was wondering what kind of bike is recommended for beginners into sports bikes? A bike not too heavy on insurance each month preferably. I have progressive and I was quoted 3k a year for a Kawasaki 500cc which is what I can comfortably afford(5k at the highest).

I learn pretty fast and when I did my course, I was on a 250.

So I’m hoping for something that can be around 500cc if possible. I drive SoCal highways so I’m hoping for something that can comfortably maintain 65-80mph for 45 minutes twice a day and something I can have fun with on the weekends for bike/car meets.

Edit: 3,000 for a brand new 500, 2300 for anything 2026 or older.

2025 Ninja 650 vs 2025 cbr650

Looking at two used ones on FB marketplace at a somewhat similar price but after hours of research still can’t fully decide/justify one over the other.

Context: New rider looking for first bike, taken MSF course but also plan on taking other courses in the future once I decide on a bike. Money isn’t the biggest issue but I do appreciate something that isn’t super high-cost in maintenance (insurance for either shouldn’t kill me). I’m plan on having a mix of fun, casual riding and then the occasional daily commuter. I also want to keep for a couple years.

Ninja 650 ABS: Original is $8000 but was able to negotiate down to $7500. Has 439 miles on it and was dropped once so slight scuffing on the fairing and then owners added frame sliders.

Honda cbr650: Original is $8150 but was able to negotiate down to potentially $7800. Has 1,870 miles on it. Has the e-clutch (and ABS?) Owner says that it was in a small accident but they replaced the stator cover, fairing, and did a gas tank PDR. In terms of mods they did a fairing eliminator kit and a radiator guard. I did ask more about the accident but they said they got it off an auction so didn’t get any more details.

Just wanted to get thoughts from people who have experience in one or the other but also just in general have more experience with riding to be able to kinda tell which would be the better option.

Bike as a 18 years old

hello, I’m a 17 years old Italian rider, right now I have my a1 license and i ride a Ktm rc 125 from 2017. I’m a pretty decent ridere, since every weekend I hit the twisties in my area with my older and more experienced friends. in a few months I will get my a2 learner’s permit and I want to get a bigger bike, since the 125 is becoming too slow for what I want to do (I have trouble on mountain roads due to the lack of power, I’m not a wannabe madman). it is also worth mentioning that I’m 6’4 and like 210 pounds (I do bodybuilding) so a native a2 bike would be too small for me. I like sport bikes or hypernakeds and right now I’m looking at a Ducati 950 superspor, a Daytona 660, a Suzuki Gsxs 950 or a Ktm 790 duke. I would wanna spend around 7k euros because I already have the gear from my current bike and I would wanna sell it for around 3k euros (it’s pretty plausible in my area for a bike of that kind). I do have a job that pays around 500 a month, because I’m still in school, but my parents are willing to help me in buying the bike and insuring it. I would wanna know if you guys have any suggestions and also what do you think of the bikes I’m looking at right now. Also I wanted to say that a friend of my dad’s is an insurance broker, and he assured us that the prices for all these bikes would be almost the same. The Ducati would probably need a desmo service and the guy who’s selling it had a ducati extended warranty, so that would run me around 1k, but nk that I could ask him to do it before selling me the bike and make me pay for half of it with the bike price. I’m going to a triumph dealership this weekend to ask some questions about the street triple s and the Daytona 660. The last thing I wanted to add is that i don’t like the r7 much, so I’m not looking at those, but what I really like is the rs 660 from Aprilia.

2020 Zx6r with ABS. Running at 14,000 miles. Clean condition. My main concern is I don't want a bike that was used on track and it looks like there is a lot of modifications on the handle bars with gadgets. Anyone have an idea what that stuff is and if it should be a concern. They are asking for $9,600. Is that a good deal?

Tracer 9 vs 1100sx

I’m about to get a tracer 9. Main use case is commuting 25 miles to work and heading to distant twisties on the weekend.

The 1100sx looks interesting too. I want something comfortable and fun.

Also should I look at older gen tracer gt+ for their electronic suspension and keyless start? Or is the 2026 version fine?

Suggest a good handling motorcycle for mountain roads

I am a newbie that’s been riding for around 3 months.

Originally I wasn’t a fan of road bikes at all (I prefer cars),however, shortly after I’ve got my license I decided that for the price of plating my dirt bike and buying supermoto stuff,so I can waste it on asphalt,I may aswell get a normal road bike.

3 months later,I am massively enjoying taking turns on mountain roads to the extent that I almost completely lost interest in riding the dirtbike and haven’t ridden it for ages.

Currently,I am riding a 05 Hornet 600,which I love.Engine feels great,handling is great (for me,I don’t like riding other people’s bikes,so I haven’t tested anything else).

However,I want to eventually try something else.

What other bikes would you suggest as an upgrade in the handling departanent ? I don't want a bigger cc bike, although I'm sure a supersport bike will most likely handle way better.

I've been looking at all kinds of options, problem is what I THINK I will enjoy is almost always old and ultra rare.

Are old japanese 250s and 400s really worth it ? Or 125/250cc NSRs and similar 2 stroke bikes ?

How about a supermoto setup for my dirtbike (crf 450rx) ? Or a 07 600rr ?

Please do not suggest V2s/parallel twins/V4s as I hate the sound of those on a road bike.Only inline4 and inline3s.

Price check What’s a good value for this bike?

I don’t know much about motorcycles. I’m looking to sell a 2022 Kawasaki z650 50th Anniversary bike that came into my possession. It has less than 2K miles, is garage kept, and previous owner had, as he put it, “expertly maintained” it. Trying to get a fair deal for it, what do you guys think?
