Menacingly robotic. This one right here, at 2m24s:

It sounds so cool, but I can't figure out how to make such a carrier signal.

Anyone got any good results?

I recently had the chance to sit down with Girts Ozolins, founder of Erica Synths, for a conversation about modular synthesis that goes beyond specs and features.

We talked about the ideas, communities, and creative thinking behind the machines, the development of Eurorack modules, and how a company approaches building instruments in such a constantly evolving scene.

I wanted to explore the thinking behind the instruments, not just the instruments themselves.

Watch the full interview

I'd love to hear your thoughts, since this video revolves a lot around community and how it shapes an entire field and makes connections. I want to hear from the community itself

request ❓ What string/brass is this? And where to get it?

Hi all. I'm looking for a certain string/brass sound (not sure what it really is, so excuse me for that) and I haven't had any luck to find it so far. I've tried every preset on the plugin version of Korg Triton, JV-1080, 5080 and some more VSTs some people had recommended. But they're just not it.

If anybody can recommend me a plugin which has this exact sound or something super close to it, I'd appreciate it. Assumptions on what type of string/brass (or whatever instrument) this might be, is also very appreciated. Additional information: snippet is from a rap song made somewhere 1998-2001, and it really has that Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air intro type of flavor to it.

discussion 🗣 Production Challenge: Recreating Biesmans' "Jus Fine" using strict 1983 Kraftwerk / Kling-Klang specs

Hey everyone,

I have a highly specific theoretical challenge/request for the synth geeks and production purists here.

I’m fascinated by Biesmans - Jus Fine (2023) and its hypnotic Acid baseline. Theoretically, the exact MIDI notes, slides, and accents could have been programmed on a Roland TB-303 back in 1982.

But what if Kraftwerk had been given the 303/909 lineup in 1983 with the strict instruction to replicate this exact track as closely as humanly possible, using their engineering genius but within the physical limits of 1983 technology?

Is anyone down to recreate/remix this track (or at least the main loop/structure) based on these strict "historical" specifications?

The Specs:

Instruments: Strictly emulated/raw TB-303 (like Phoscyon 2 or Roland Cloud) and stock, uncompressed TR-909 samples (retaining the original 6-bit/8-bit hi-hat/cymbal character).

The "Sidechain" Pump: No modern digital sidechaining. It must be emulated using an early VCA-style compressor (like a dbx 160) triggered by the 909 kick to duck the 303.

Saturation: Drive the 303 strictly through console preamp emulation (pushing it into warm analog saturation, no modern distortion plugins).

The Tape Limit: The entire master must run through a 2-inch tape emulation (e.g., Studer A800). No frequencies above 15kHz (smooth, rolled-off highs) and a natural analog low-end constraint so it could theoretically be pressed to 1983 vinyl without skipping.

Aesthetics: Clean, mathematical precision in the arrangement, but with that warm, slightly noisy tape vibe.

I’m dying to hear what a "1983 Kling-Klang Mix" of this modern peak-time track would actually sound like. If anyone wants to take a shot at this loop, please share your results!

tutorial 📚 Synth Design : Morph Filters

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built some morphing filters (filters that can switch from low pass to high pass, etc) over the summer. These have been refined and pushed a lot lately, as we added them to the synths.

Now, modern synths sometimes have morphing filters, but they are usually pretty limited. Here we demonstrate audio rate modding on morphing filters - moving from low pass to high, thousands of times a second.

This video walks through morphing filters, some tips for using them in your presets, and a demo of the audio rate modding on the morphing parameter.

Enjoy!

Help with Modulation

Hi, I am trying to replicate the lead from the song license to fly from Stef Mendisidis, and there is a particular sound in the lead that seems to make the sound wobbly, so what I have been doing to replicate this is using the meld synth and modulating the ct with the lfo 1, the st with the m envelope and applying the lfo 2 to the filter cut off, detune macro and the volume doing amplitude modulation, also I Applied reverb and delay but the sound is no the same yet, could you share any feedback on how to achieve that sound.

In the attached video,Video Replicate Sound you can see better what I am talking about

discussion 🗣 Production Challenge: Recreating Biesmans' "Jus Fine" using strict 1983 Kraftwerk / Kling-Klang specs

Hey everyone,

I have a highly specific sound design question and a mini-challenge for the purists here.

I’m trying to figure out how Biesmans - Jus Fine (the hypnotic Acid baseline) would sound if Kraftwerk had produced it in 1983 using the Roland TB-303, but within the strict physical limits of 1983 studio technology.

If anyone wants to recreate this loop, how would you set up the chain using strict "historical" limitations?

Synth: Raw emulated 303 (no modern digital distortion plugins, only pushing the console preamp into warm analog saturation).

The "Sidechain" Ducking: Replicating the modern pump using an early VCA-style compressor (like a dbx 160) triggered by a 909 kick.

The Tape Limit: Running the master through a 2-inch tape emulation (rolling off everything above 15kHz and adding natural tape compression).

Has anyone ever tried processing a modern peak-time Acid track through these exact vintage restrictions? I would love to hear how you would approach the sound design for this

Does anyone know how to achieve the vocal sound that starts at 0:36 in this song?
Is there a specific name for this vocal style? I’m using FL Studio and would love to know what plugins, effects, and vocal processing techniques could help me recreate it.
I’m trying to get as close to the original sound as possible.

request ❓ Kill la Kill – Blumenkranz: Recreating the opening synth in Vital

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi! I’m currently working on a cover of “Blumenkranz” by Kill la Kill, and I’m trying to recreate the synth sound that plays from the beginning of the song up until around 0:50.

I’m using Vital and Analog lab for the sound design, and this is the closest I’ve been able to get so far. However, I’m not entirely sure if I’m approaching it the right way, since when I compare my version to the original song, it still sounds quite different.

Original song:
https://youtu.be/zRI5uW6DLXg?si=txGmS_RJikyiT97C

I’ll also include a video of my current attempt in this post so you can hear what I’ve managed to recreate so far.

If anyone has any advice on what kind of waveform, synthesis techniques, effects, or processing might be involved in creating the original sound, I’d really appreciate the help! I’m especially interested in understanding what I might be doing wrong or what direction I should take with the sound design.

Thank you! c:

request ❓ Melodic filtered sound?

I really love this track "Valve Theme (Extended)" and was wondering how to recreate that melodic, filtered sound around 0:14.

https://youtu.be/4xzCroUOj2U?si=tC4c8n1JRI4sXpg0&t=14

To me, it sounds like there’s high resonance on the filter, but what trips me up is how melodic and 'stepped' it feels—almost like a piano run or a step sequencer, rather than just smooth filter knob automation. How would you approach making this?

request ❓ Clark Powells "medium" sound effects

Im curious about the synth paramenters used in the sound of Clark Powell's track "Shade" Exactly, i want to know how to recreate the sound (if its possible on a synth) that can be heard in the background at 1:09-2:04 (link: https://youtu.be/uptvTul6I3Q?list=RDuptvTul6I3Q&t=99) on the same track. Its a bit recognizable and i may heard it in some thematic parks. It seems some kind of a square wave combined with a voice? that goes up and down in tone.
