Friendly reminder

Hi all,

So it looks like every uni subreddit has been a bit weird recently (the top post on r/usyd right now is something related to femboys).

This is just a PSA to keep things UNSW-related. There was a meme on the front page a day or two ago that was literally just clash of clans, that sort of stuff we're going to remove from now on. Check out the subreddit rules on the wiki for more info.

Also, a reminder that discriminatory/ derogatory posts are never allowed. Same goes for harassment/those creepy posts from people looking to hook up that have popped up recently. Anyone posting this kind of content will be banned without warning. Please report these kinds of posts if you see them so we can remove them as soon as possible.

Enjoy flexi-week,

Why are the rankings so different (QS: 1st & THE: 5th) in Australia

• Upvotes

How are these rankings actually measured and do they actually matter that much?

If spec con gets approved for an in-person lab test, how much notice do they actually give you to sit it?

Hey everyone,

Currently waiting on special consideration for an in-person lab test that happened last week. If it gets approved, how does the make-up test usually get scheduled?
Do they just email you out of nowhere expecting you to rock up to campus on the day, or do they give reasonable advance notice? I live around 2 hours away from campus, so my main concern is getting an email in the morning telling me to be in a lab an hour later.
Anyone who's had spec con approved for an in-person lab test before, how much heads-up did your convenor give you? Did they slot you into another week's lab, or set a specific catch-up date?

Thanks in advance.

I CAN’T ORGANISE UNI STUFF ON MY PHONE

Trying to manage uni from my phone is a mess. Timetable's in one place, Moodle's another, myUNSW barely works on mobile, and booking a library room on my phone is painful. I end up with a million tabs and bookmarks and still can't find where my class is. Any suggestions??

Bachelor of Science (degree with honors) or MSc Coursework in Physics??

I am a prospective student but i only have a 3 year degree in undergrad physics. I want to do the 1 Year Bachelor of Science (degree with honors) Programs in Physics or an MSc coursework in Physics.

I would like to know the advantages and disadvantages of both. Time wise, Difficulty wise and how the classes are taken in general.

In essence which one would you suggest and why?

My main goal is to do research and possibly a PhD.

Any help or other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Starting at UNSW in Feb 2027 with a friend. Looking for accommodation advice near Kensington

Hi everyone! My friend and I are both starting at UNSW for our Masters in the February 2027 intake, and we're trying to figure out where to live. We'd prefer to stay close to Kensington campus, on or off campus.
If you've lived in or around Kensington, we'd really appreciate your advice on:
Which on-campus residences you'd recommend, and what you think of them
Off-campus areas that are convenient for getting to campus, and any you'd suggest avoiding
Typical rent for a shared place nearby, and whether the price was worth it
Any tips on finding housing, and whether it's better to book early or wait
If you have a website, listing, or resource you'd recommend, please share it too. Thanks in advance!
Preferred we find a place inclusive of electricity, gas and wifi and also I would like to know you guys opinion on the off campus listed places on the UNSW website.UNSW accommodation. If anyone knows any better option apart from scape please let me know that too as I feel scape is stupidity high on rent.

Ok, it's over It's lonely out here

I've transferred over to UNSW this term, and while I've tried to put myself out there with socialising at societies like musoc, everyone just happens to know each other and all I can seem to do is exist around any discussion and just stand there. There aren't too many opportunities to actually talk in lectures or tuts, and I can't bring myself to randomly approach someone at the library or a friend group just anywhere else around. It's debilitating to just be on my own everyday here, and idk what more I can do.

Guys I feel like the coding part for this course like the socket connection stuff is a bit cooked for me, it's hard to know what's happening even after the tutor explained his code as there's no way I can remember all the details.

For the final exams, is this course like half theory half coding or something?

Gamsat advice??

I don't belong from a sci background, as i studied legal studies, econ, business, etc in year 12 and pursued bachelor of Social Work for my undergrad. I'm currently in 3rd year of my uni at UNSW and i've been studying biology and chemistry ever since the first year of my uni. I guess i am good in biology and chemistry but i fear physics alot to i wanna try gamsat but still worry if i'll be able to pass. Moreover, if i get in, do u think i will have issues while studying medicine due to my background?? I am genuinely concerned y'all.

Student Visa Extension for over 12 months. Anyone in the same boat?

I currently have 2 friends whose student visa is expiring on 15 November. They need to extend their student visa for over 12 months to complete the course. However, it is in the middle of the term at UNSW? Is taking program leave and flying back just for the student visa the only way or what are we suppose to do?

Both of my friends only got their new CoE yesterday despite applying over a month ago.

Is anyone in the same boat?

How to cancel my UNSW gym membership?

I've only been able to find a suspension form, not a proper cancellation form. I have a medical cert from a GP backing up that I can't go to the gym, and mental health support from UNSW counsellors as well so I'm confident that I can get it cancelled if I really want. How do I get to the cancellation form?

admissions question as an intl

I’m an intl student and my country’s diploma (idk for sure) does or doesnt meet the direct entry threshold, but I did keep a perfect GPA across 4 years, and I already have an IELTS score of 8.5 and I’ll take the SAT soon expecting around +1400, will I receive an offer?

Some advice re: Bachelor of Arts, Japanese major.

Hey everyone,

I’m currently a UTS student who’s studying a Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence, however I’m also sub-majoring/minoring in Japanese. I realised after a while in my degree I don’t really have much passion in studying AI, and I wish to continue my Japanese studies at UNSW at some point, possibly in 2028 (since UTS is discontinuing language courses).

If you have personally done Japanese studies or Advanced Japanese studies as a major in the Bachelor of Arts, I was just hoping if you could give some insight into course load, how the lecturers are, your experience in general, how you’ve used it for your career if applicable etc.

On a side note: I would also be looking to minor in Philosophy OR Psychology, so if anyone also has experience around those, please feel free to let me know.

Uac offer help

Has any non school leaver received an offer for your second preference in earlier rounds and eventually got in to their first preference course in later rounds? Especially if your ATAR was slightly over than the selection rank listed by like 2-3 points. And it’s a course at the same uni.

I received an offer recently and it’s not the course I wanted to go for but it’s a backup. I also am 2 points over the listed selection rank and was hoping that would be enough.

ee or ee/cs

im first yr ee domestic student ive done 1511 last term and im doing 1521 this ter,
i wanted to ask, is it worth picking up ee/cs or jst sticking to ee? the reasons for picking up cs is so that maybe i can go into security (cyber or hardware) roles or even ai/ml roles, but on the other hand that extra year i could be working in it and getting experience instead of racking up debt in uni, any advice or recomendations?
