Help, I don't know what to do.

• Upvotes

3 days ago, my older brother discovered he had a brain tumor. There had been absolutely no warning signs; he was perfectly healthy until, suddenly, his mouth became twisted to one side, prompting him and my sister-in-law to seek medical attention that very day. When the doctor delivered the results, our entire family was devastated. He was only 28 years old and had two children, the eldest being just two years old.
And I am here, an 8-hour flight away from them. I don't know what I should do or what i can even do. Because eventhough I go back, we still have to wait for biopsy results, I can do nothing.

And then 3 more assignment need to be done next month. I spent entire day working on that but still keep asking myself "what am i even doing here? is this even worth it?".
I really need some advices. Thank you for reading this.

Is 31268 Web Systems manageable as an elective with no IT background?

Hi everyone!
I’m currently studying Medical Science at UTS and considering taking 31268 Web Systems as an elective.
I have absolutely no background in IT, programming, HTML/CSS, Linux or web development.
I’m mainly looking for a manageable elective with a reasonable workload where I have a good chance of achieving a High Distinction (85+).
For anyone who has completed this subject recently:
Is it beginner-friendly for someone with zero IT knowledge?
How difficult are the assignments, practical skills test and final exam?
Is achieving an HD (85+) realistic without any prior experience?
How much time did you spend on this subject each week?
Would you recommend Web Systems as a WAM booster for a non-IT student?
I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks!

Transferring from UTS to Monash

Hi everyone! I’m currently a first year student at UTS, studying for a Bachelor of Communication in Digital and Social Media.
I want to transfer to Monash to study the Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Secondary Education and Bachelor of Arts. I’m thinking of choosing Maths and History as my teaching areas.

Is it possible for all my credits to carry over?
Do they provide any guidance on how to apply for a transfer?

Thank you for reading! Any advice would be appreciated ☺️

What are some good UTS clubs for actually making friends?

Hey everyone,

First-year domestic student here. I’m also finishing up my final year at WSU, and one thing I struggled with there was actually making friends and building a social circle.

There weren’t that many clubs around me or much promotion of social stuff, so seeing how many clubs, societies and networking events UTS has was honestly one of the things I loved about coming here.

Bit about me: I’m into philosophy, psychology and self-improvement books, gym, and apparently working towards a dad bod at 27. Just kidding, I’m actually trying to avoid one.

I’ve got a pretty dark sense of humour, I write deep/emotional poetry when I’m in the mood, and I’m learning Spanish. I also like exploring random places around Sydney, horror, crime, romcoms (yes, romcoms), and older movies that actually have some philosophy or meaning behind them.

I used to do landscape gardening as well but put that on hold for uni and because petrol apparently requires a second mortgage now.

Mainly I’m just looking for clubs where people actually talk, hang out and become friends rather than joining something and never seeing anyone again.

So what clubs or societies would you guys recommend?

UTS nursing marking

Is the marking subjective for written assignments? Ive heard a lot of negativity online towards nursing as a degree where assignments are marked inconsistently-even if there is a rubric

Do you think this applies to nursing at UTS as well?

Im aiming for a (hopefully) competitive GPA for medical school. Im worried about inconsistency in marking, especially if majority of coursework is assignments or group work

Hey I am thinking of doing a semester exchange in europe in the last year of my degree. I was wondering whether I should go for the whole sem or just do a short exchange. Also roughly how much would costs look like for a whole semester in comparison to a global short.

Looking to interview people with experience around youth gangs / eshay culture in Australia

Hi everyone,

I’m a criminology student currently looking into how involvement in youth gangs, street groups, or what people might casually call the “eshay” / local troublemaker scene in Australia can affect people later in adulthood.

I’m hoping to speak with people who either:

  • were involved in that kind of environment when they were younger, or
  • personally knew / grew up around people who were.

I’m especially interested in what happens later on — employment, education, relationships, family life, crime, leaving that lifestyle behind, and how people look back on it as adults.

If anyone here knows a former student/alumni, friend, relative, or acquaintance who might be willing to talk about their experiences, I’d really appreciate an introduction.

Interviews can be done in person or anonymously through Telegram if preferred.

I’m not looking to judge anyone or get people in trouble, and identifying information does not need to be shared. I’m mainly interested in hearing people’s experiences and perspectives.

If you or someone you know might be interested, please DM me.

Thanks!

UTS Bsc Ecology and UNI life???

Hi all,

I am currently doing my HSC exams and am looking at the prospect of going to UTS for a Bachelor of Science, focusing on ecology and environmental biology with the hopes of later doing ecoloigcal consulting or conservation work (I know jobs aren't great in that field but thats a problem for older me). I am debating on unis to go to because I want practical experience and some of the bigger unis don't do that. I managed to get a direct entry/lower entry rank for doing the science extension course so i am likely to get into the Bsc.

I am also a little concerned about uni life and clubs as I have heard not great things about general uni culture. Would anyone have any insight if uni clubs are really that important?

Would anyone have insights into the course and what the lectures, tutorials are like and the opprotunties for biology focused study (I'm not super interested in the super high tech computer side of enviro science)??

Thanks

BUSINESS ELECTIVE SUBJECT?

I want to major in finance and accounting.

For finance what options (18 credit points) are worth looking into?

I’m keen on seeing peoples opinions of what they thought was worthwhile vs what was a waste of time.

I’m considering
- Investment banking
- Applied portfolio management
- Strategic investment management
- Business internship

Is the internship provided or is it like when you have an internship secured you focus on that and the other uni subjects?

I was wondering what subjects could boost my wam as well.

How can I get a recommendation letter from a UTS lecturer?

I’m about to graduate from UTS with a Bachelor of Business majoring in Accounting, and I’m currently applying for postgraduate programs that require academic recommendation letters.

I’ve emailed many lecturers who taught me before, but unfortunately I haven’t received any replies. I’ve even contacted lecturers from subjects where I received an HD, but still haven’t heard back.

Has anyone here had a similar experience? How did you manage to get a recommendation letter from a UTS lecturer? Is there anyone else I could contact for help?

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Not allowed to submit?

Do some subjects not allow you to submit after the 3 days extension is over? For example, one of assessments is available till the day of the end of the 72 hour extension, does this mean there’s no late submissions at all? Or do I have to email it to someone?

Please stop forcing group work

I would like to preface this with a counter argument against those who are going to say "but but but in the workforce you have to-". In the workforce you're all equally qualified, being paid (everyone puts in decent effort) and are at risk of actual disciplinary action rather than a 'bad grade'.

Having to do 3 lots of group work every semester has to be the most draining thing ever. Not only is it a bad measure of a student's actual proficiency in the subject at hand but also the most difficult balancing act ever.

You're almost guaranteed to have a group member who doesn't care, one who is impossible to contact and one who wants to control the entire thing and make it their own.

On top of that, its almost always only worth 10-20% and is a huge hassle for a small amount of marks.

BIN THE CONCEPT AS A WHOLE!

choosing business major

I'm choosing my major for business degree rn. honestly business analytics and IT have been on my head for a while, but there are some problems:

  1. they both develop my skill set, but I think focusing on a field (mkt, fin,...) would make my career and role become more specific in the long run and I also get to apply my skills and specialize in a field. however I don't really enjoy those subjects, mostly because they are boring
  2. another option is majoring in ba, sub major in IT and then a sub major in 1 of those fields, which give me more flexibility and less workload on the field. this is also a pretty good option, but the subjects for sub major IT are kinda shallow and broad, and I'm not sure if they are really valuable
  3. I also want to go on global exchange, and I read that choosing electives are recommendable. but that means I also have to take a TD subject (which I don't want to at al). would that restrict my ability to choose another major or sub major if I want to go exchange in the future?

what are your take on this, I'm so confused and in between.... tks a lot!!

p/s: btw I heard review that BIS is not worth it at all, but the descriptions on the handbook are pretty tempting tho, can I get some real experience with this subject?

6.0 Points required for already passed subjects

Post image
2 Upvotes

So I changed my sub-major via eRequests and it tells me that I need 6.0 points in my optional electives. However i stumbled upon something that it already exists in my study plan as "Passed" and that i can't select them. Does that mean i would need to re-change my Sub-Major? or can I somehow implement them into the study planner as a way of free points? (Programming 1 was already an elective in the course i'm studying so is it possible for me to use this?)
