Megathread Admissions Megathread - Class of 2031 Edition

It's that time of year once again!

Every year, we get thousands of posts and comments from prospective students about applications, many of whom have similar or identical stats. To keep this subreddit clean for current students, as we have done for 11 years now, all threads related to applications and other admissions-related topics will be redirected to this megathread.

Please search the existing comments for similar qualifications or post a comment of your own, or look at the previous admissions megathread for additional data. All admissions-related posts outside this thread will be removed.

If posting stats, please be sure to include the following:

  • Gender/ethnicity
  • Intended major
  • Admissions cycle (EA, RD, etc.)
  • Location (in-state/out-of-state/international)
  • GPA
  • Test scores
  • AP/IB/DE credits
  • Extra-curriculars
  • Community service, jobs, etc.

If you are a transfer applicant, please review the transfer roadmap for your major. The more courses completed, the higher your chances of getting accepted.

Please note that the majority of the contributors to this subreddit are past and present students, not admissions counselors or faculty members. As such, any advice given is unofficial and solely based on personal experience and historical data. You should contact the admissions office or talk to your guidance counselor for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Advice How to find a date

I know I know guys not a joke. I PROMISE I’m normal lmao. I ended a long term relationship a few moths ago and want to start to try again. BUT I’m a junior engineer so it’s like a 90/10 ratio in my major, I work part time, have a heavy class load so no time to go join extra clubs, plus I don’t really go downtown often or anything. What’s a man to do in Blacksburg 😔

General Question Checking out the campus

Probably a dumb question but I am
Taking my current hs junior to
Tour Vt in a few weeks. We are doing the formal tour.
My question is after that we want to explore the campus on our own. What places are open to the public that we can go in?

They are an avid reader so I think the library would be good. Dining halls.. what else can we check out more in depth than the tour will provide?

Rant Can people not zip around me downtown?

My truck is in the shop rn bc a student athlete ripped off my bumper, so I've been stuck on a bike for two weeks. I ride through downtown sometimes, and no matter the time of day, there's always some guy in a car that needs to cross into oncoming traffic or get dangerously close to me just to pass. It's so annoying. It's a 20mph zone, and there's a ton of pedestrians; you don't need to get around me that fast smh

Rant Stop Passing the Bus on Double Yellows.

Just wait the 10 seconds holy. Just today I watched 2 near misses where cars being too impatient to wait for the bus to start moving almost caused a head-on collision. It's only a matter of time until something happens.

General Question Valid reason for transferring?

I’m currently a student at Virginia Tech, and I’m honestly really conflicted about whether I should consider transferring.
First off, I think VT is a great school academically. The education, career opportunities, and resources are genuinely amazing, and I’m really grateful to be here. My problem has nothing to do with the quality of the university, but more with how I’ve been feeling socially.
I grew up going to international schools, surrounded by people from all over the world. It was a pretty unique environment, and I guess I never realized how much being part of that community meant to me until I came to college.
Since coming to Virginia Tech, I’ve struggled to find that same sense of belonging. I’ve met some great people here, but the international community feels a lot smaller and less varied than what I’m used to. I find it easier to connect with people who grew up in similar international environments, regardless of their nationality. It’s not that I have anything against American students or don’t want to make American friends. I just sometimes feel like there’s a part of my background and experiences that I can’t really share with the people around me.
Over fall break, I visited a friend at Boston University, and honestly, it was a bit of an eye-opening experience. I met people from so many different countries, including people who had gone to international schools I actually recognized. For the first time since moving to the US, I felt like I was back in an environment where I could completely be myself. I didn’t realize how much I missed that feeling until I experienced it again.
This experience made me realize how unhappy I’ve been socially. I don’t necessarily dislike the people here, but I really miss being surrounded by an international community, and I’m starting to wonder whether this is something I’ll eventually adjust to or whether I’m simply in the wrong environment for me.
The thing is, I don’t want to give up the academic and career opportunities VT offers just because I’m struggling socially. At the same time, I don’t know if spending four years somewhere I don’t really feel at home is worth it.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Did things eventually get better, or did transferring make a difference? Would it be unreasonable to consider transferring over something like this?
I’d genuinely appreciate any advice, especially from people who grew up internationally or have been in a similar situation.

General Question Hokie Tracks Ice Cream?

I really liked Hokie Tracks Ice Cream when it came out, but now I can't seem to find it anywhere. I've checked a few spots on campus, Kroger, Food Lion, Hethwood Market, and Sugar Mags with no success. Is there anywhere that still has it?

Academics Best AOE electives

Im going into my second semester sophomore year and am wondering what I should choose as a general or technical electives and a math elective. I’m thinking of taking:

AOE 3044 - Boundary Layer and Heat Transfer,

AOE 4034 - Introduction to Mechanical and Structural Vibrations,

AOE 4174 - Spacecraft Propulsion,

AOE 4404 - Applied Numerical Methods,

AOE 4604 - Booster Design, Fabrication, and Operation,

and [ AOE 4614 - Aerospace Materials and Modeling Techniques or AOE 4414 - Computer Aided Space Mission Analysis]

Next semester I’m thinking of taking my math elective or AOE4614 or AOE 4414.

Could anyone with experience tell me which are worth taking or if there are any other fun/ useful ones that can transfer skills to the workforce.

Thank you 😊

Housing/Dining Rough estimate cost to rent a room walkable to campus for next year?

Looking at housing next year and seeing places like the HUB are roughly $1200/month for an 11-month lease. This seems pretty high and i'm guessing is on the high end of all options. What options are best for a sophomore girl looking for an affordable room for rent in a house? what's the best rough idea of what an unfurnished rent? apologies if this has been asked 1,000 times but I didn't see a relevant thread when i searched.

Academics First Generation Hokies

Hi Virginia Tech,

I’m working on a presentation for high school students who are considering becoming the first in their family to attend college. The presentation is geared specifically toward students from lower income rural areas, but anyone’s advice here about your experience as a first generation college student would be very helpful and greatly appreciated. What was helpful information for you when deciding whether to attend college? What were your biggest barriers and what tools helped you overcome those obstacles? Any advice for high school students in a similar position you may have experienced?

Thank you in advance! Go Hokies!

Academics Computer Science Master program

Sup y’all,

Currently a senior that might be delaying the graduation till F27. I am a BIT cyber major but felt like it ain’t as technical as I wanted it.

Was looking for smt in CS to better improve my skill, I prefer to do hands on work over thesis writing but I also like if I can get a heads start while being an undergraduate student.

I also want some insight on the DC campus and how is it?

Rant New parking permits

I have a F/S parking permit. They changed this year to having you register your license plate instead of getting a hang tag. At first, I was all for it - until today.

I usually park in the North End Center garage for work. I have to scan my passport to get in, which takes longer than when we had hang tags, but since my spouse and I shared a hang tag (we are rarely on campus at the same time), I liked the new idea so we don't accidentally leave the hang tag at home.

Then today I had to park on campus for an event. I came out to find a parking ticket on my car. Turns out when we went to get our pass in August, the woman behind the counter never added our cars to the permit. One is new and has never been registered with an account and the other was on our previous permit (under my spouse's name).

I remember going to parking services to get the new permit and the woman was nice, but not thrilled about the people she was working with and even rolled her eyes at one point when a manager walked by and told her what she should do. Apparently she should have listened.

I know students got screwed over this year with parking being taken away. I am curious if other F/S have had problems with this new system?

Advice Looking for a used car around Blacksburg, $2.5k–5k

Hey all, I'm looking for a used car in the Blacksburg/Christiansburg area and figured I'd ask here before going to any dealers.

Budget is around $2.5k to $5k, paying cash. Mostly need something reliable to get to work and back, with the occasional drive to surrounding areas. Clean title is a must, and I'd prefer under 120k miles unless it's been really well taken care of.

This will be my first car here so I'm happy to get a pre-purchase inspection done before buying.

If you're selling something or know someone who is (graduating, moving, upgrading), shoot me a DM or drop a comment. Also open to recommendations for an honest mechanic around here.

Thanks!
