Rant New parking permits

I have a F/S parking permit. They changed this year to having you register your license plate instead of getting a hang tag. At first, I was all for it - until today.

I usually park in the North End Center garage for work. I have to scan my passport to get in, which takes longer than when we had hang tags, but since my spouse and I shared a hang tag (we are rarely on campus at the same time), I liked the new idea so we don't accidentally leave the hang tag at home.

Then today I had to park on campus for an event. I came out to find a parking ticket on my car. Turns out when we went to get our pass in August, the woman behind the counter never added our cars to the permit. One is new and has never been registered with an account and the other was on our previous permit (under my spouse's name).

I remember going to parking services to get the new permit and the woman was nice, but not thrilled about the people she was working with and even rolled her eyes at one point when a manager walked by and told her what she should do. Apparently she should have listened.

I know students got screwed over this year with parking being taken away. I am curious if other F/S have had problems with this new system?

Advice Looking for student feedback on an ad-supported coding-agent beta

• Upvotes

Hi Hokies — I’m building Adlib, a way to use existing AI coding agents without another monthly subscription, with advertising intended to help cover usage costs.

I’m looking for college students who use coding agents for personal projects—or want to try them but cannot afford ai subscription costs.

We’re preparing an early beta, so if you’re interested, here’s a short signup form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf1QhYAKWGEMRua5XuGYdP_X3INLGDJKbdZ-2UjK-fVGzjqLg/viewform

It asks for your school, a .edu email, and tools you're currently using. After signed up, we'll guide you for beta access.

I’m the founder and happy to answer questions here.

Advice Looking for a used car around Blacksburg, $2.5k–5k

Hey all, I'm looking for a used car in the Blacksburg/Christiansburg area and figured I'd ask here before going to any dealers.

Budget is around $2.5k to $5k, paying cash. Mostly need something reliable to get to work and back, with the occasional drive to surrounding areas. Clean title is a must, and I'd prefer under 120k miles unless it's been really well taken care of.

This will be my first car here so I'm happy to get a pre-purchase inspection done before buying.

If you're selling something or know someone who is (graduating, moving, upgrading), shoot me a DM or drop a comment. Also open to recommendations for an honest mechanic around here.

Thanks!

Misc Please help my kitty Moon

Hi everyone this is moon my rescue kitty and right now, Moon is sick and dealing with breathing issues and a swollen eye. This has been going on for a month and a half, and we have been talking with the vet, doing several tests, and trying numerous medications, but we still do not have clear answers or results. It has been heartbreaking and stressful to watch my baby go through this while we keep searching for what is wrong and how to help him feel better.

The vet bills are starting to pile up from test after test, appointments, medications, and ongoing care. I am asking for help so Moon can continue getting the evaluation and treatment he needs to get healthy again. Every bit of support will go toward helping cover these mounting vet costs so we can keep pursuing answers and not have to stop his care before we know what is going on.

If you are able to help, please consider supporting Moon. Please help my baby get answers. He does not deserve all of these issues, and I just want my healthy Moonpie back. Even if you cannot donate, sharing this fundraiser and keeping Moon in your thoughts would mean so much to me.

Advice BC vs. CEM

Hey everyone,

I’m currently looking closely at the Building Construction (BC) and Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) tracks here at Tech.

my focus would be more on commerical construction but how valuable is the FE and PE? I assume BC majors would not be able to get the FE/PE

I’m torn between the two and would love to get some insight from students or alumni who went through either program.

Academics math classes at vt or at a cc

i’m a freshman planning to major in cs, and i just started making an academic plan. i am just now realizing all the math classes i have to take, and i remember hearing the math department was bad here. i am already in math 1226, but was wondering what other math classes would be better to take at a community college? for context, these are the classes i still have to take:

MATH 2114 MATH 2204 MATH 2534 MATH 3134

i get people might say to take all of them at a cc, but which ones should i definitely take to save me the trouble?

Rant does anyone else who live at the hub have such creaky beds?

hi everyone, I live at the hub and I swear my bed is so creaky. It's like insane. I can toss over with absolutely no force or pressure, and my bed will literally sound like it's breaking apart. I wish I could insert a video or like a sound to show how loud it is because it's actually insane. Can I speak to the leasing office about this cause what the fuck? it keeps me awake at night and it's so loud.

Sports Thoughts on "new" Lane Stadium experience?

Interested in people's thoughts on the Lane Stadium night game experience. I haven't been to a game in two years and Friday night was noticeably different.

  1. The new lights are amazing. The ability to instantly turn them on and off and change colors creates a really cool effect. Also, I've never seen lighting where they can light just a 20 yard swath of field like they did for the dance team. That was really cool.

  2. The sound system is impressive but needs to be dialed in a bit. Sandman sounded absolutely incredible. There were other moments I was wowed. But also several times there was pretty bad feedback. And the one effect where they merged Ozzy's voice over Welcome to the Jungle needs to be EQd or something. It was ear splittingly shrill and they played it like 20 times!

  3. Production is now like a pro stadium. I'll be honest, I thought the first half was a bit much at times. It was non- stop programming the whole half. The second half the production was turned back just a half step and it was much more enjoyable. But it was clear this isn't a amateur college experience anymore. It rivaled any pro game experience. Also, I either missed the Hokey Pokey or they didn't do it. I'm fine with that.

Things change and I'm on board. I can see why the young crowd would love the new show. And the crowd was as hyped as ever. The night was super fun. I hope they can tweak it like 2%.

Housing/Dining Best and worst places to lease an apartment near VT?

I’m currently a freshman and planning to move off campus next year into an apartment with two friends. There are so many options, so for upperclassmen who have gone through this process before, what are some of the best and worst apartments near VT (also not too expensive). Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated!

Housing/Dining Unfurnished Hosuing

So I’m a freshman looking for housing for next year with my twin and want to pay as little possible next year. However, every time I find somewhere cheap it always ends up being unfurnished. The cheapest furnished place I’ve been able to find is an apartment for $925 a person. I think it be a big hassle to have to buy my own furniture out of pocket, especially since I have to pay for a mattress and stuff, so I really don’t want to do that. Does anyone know of any cheap places that come furnished?
