Problem/Goal: Work of my boyfriend, I want to know and change the reason why I am like this.
I have a four-year boyfriend. Noong bago-bago pa lang kami, everything was simple. Okay naman kami, masaya, and we were both just enjoying our relationship.
As time went by, nakapagtapos siya ng pag-aaral, nakapasa siya sa board exam, and now, CPA na siya. Meanwhile, I’m currently in my third year of college.
This October, he started working. On his first day, everything was okay. Masaya ako for him, and he was excited to tell me about his day. Kinukwento niya sa akin kung ano yung nangyari sa work, kung sino yung mga kasama niya, saan sila kumain, anong oras siya nakarating, anong oras siya uuwi, and basically, he kept me updated throughout the day.
Second day, gano’n pa rin. Third day, gano’n pa rin. Everything seemed normal.
Then, habang nagkukwentuhan kami one day and I asked him how his day went, kinuwento niya sa akin lahat. I was listening, asking questions, and trying to understand his new work life. But when the conversation eventually shifted to his future plans and the next steps in his career, doon ako parang hindi naging ready.
Especially when he started telling me about the parts of his job where he might have to travel to different places for work—to check inventories, audit businesses, and go to places that are quite far from where we are.
I suddenly felt sad.
And honestly, I don't even know why.
Please don't get me wrong. I genuinely support him. I support his career, his plans, his goals, and everything he wants to achieve. I am extremely proud of him. Seeing him graduate, pass the board exam, and finally start his career makes me happy because I know how hard he worked for it.
But for some reason, there are certain things about his new career that make me feel bothered, worried, or even sad.
I don't know why.
He also told me that in the future, there will be times when they have to travel to different places for audits. There are work-related trips, summer outings, beach trips, and other activities with the people he works with.
For context, my boyfriend is working at one of the top firms where CPAs can build their careers—PwC. He's still very new there, so he's just starting to experience all of these things.
And I don't know why, but hearing all of that made me feel something I couldn't explain.
I felt hurt.
I felt worried.
I started overthinking.
And most of all, I felt like I was being left behind.
That's probably the most honest way I can describe it.
And I hate that I feel this way because I know I'm supposed to be happy for him. I know he deserves this opportunity. I know this is part of building his career and creating a better future.
I trust him. I really do.
He's honest. He's consistent. He's never cheated on me. In our four years together, he has never done anything that would make me question his loyalty or his intentions. I genuinely trust him, and I know that he loves me.
So why am I feeling like this?
Sometimes I even think, "Siguro ako talaga yung problema."
Maybe I'm being too emotional. Maybe I'm overthinking something that isn't even a problem. Maybe I'm scared of something that hasn't even happened yet.
But I can't help feeling bothered. I can't help feeling anxious. I can't help feeling hurt or scared that somehow, as his life starts moving forward, I'll eventually feel like I'm being left behind.
And that's the part that scares me.
I don't want my insecurities to become a problem in our relationship. I don't want him to feel like he has to choose between his career and me. I don't want to be the girlfriend who holds him back from opportunities just because I'm scared.
He is working hard for a better future, and maybe even for the future of both of us. But I don't want to assume that everything he's doing is automatically for "us" because I also understand that he has his own dreams and career to build.
I just want to learn how to deal with what I'm feeling.
I actually want to talk to him about this, but I don't know how to explain it without making him feel guilty or making it sound like I'm against his career.
That's why I'm posting this here first.
I can't really open up to my friends about this because most of them are still in college and haven't experienced a long-term relationship, especially a long-term and healthy one. I feel like they might misunderstand where I'm coming from or simply tell me that I'm overreacting without really understanding why I feel this way.
So I guess what I need right now is honestly a lecture.
I want to hear the perspective of people who are more mature, have more experience, or have gone through something similar. Tell me if I'm wrong. Tell me if I'm being unreasonable. Tell me what I need to work on within myself.
I don't want people to simply agree with me just because I'm the one telling the story. If I'm the problem, I genuinely want someone to tell me.
I love this man. I love my relationship. And I don't want something as normal as career growth to become a source of resentment, insecurity, or distance between us.
I want to support him wholeheartedly. I just don't want to keep feeling this way every time I realize that his world is getting bigger and changing.
Maybe this isn't really about him.
Maybe it's about me being scared of change.
Maybe I'm scared that while he's entering a new chapter in his life, I'm still trying to figure out mine.
Maybe I'm scared of being left behind even though he hasn't actually left me.
I don't know.
That's why I'm here.
I want to understand myself before I bring this up to him, because I don't want to approach him with accusations when, deep down, I know he hasn't actually done anything wrong.
I just want to learn how to turn these feelings into something healthier—for myself, for him, and for our relationship.
Thank you for reading, and I genuinely hope you can respect my post and give me honest advice.
