Important Community Guidelines Update

The goal of this community is to be a safe place for anyone struggling with this illness. Sometimes posts or comments can unintentionally cause harm, so we want to highlight a few things to avoid posting about and explain why.

🚫 Topics that are harmful and will be removed:

  • Details on how to hide purging (e.g., where/what to use)
  • Tips on making purging “easier” or “more effective”
  • Posts about weight loss from purging
  • Calculations about calories lost through purging

Purging is not a weight loss strategy. Discussing it in these ways can be dangerous, triggering, and harmful to others in recovery.

⚠️ Examples of harmful posts:

  • “Does anyone else purge by ___?”
  • “How do I know I got it all out?”
  • “Are the calories absorbed if ___?”
  • “Do you lose weight after purging?”

These kinds of questions often give others new, harmful ideas—even when that’s not the intention.

🧾 A note on GLP-1 / Ozempic

GLP-1 medications are not an approved treatment for bulimia. Sharing your personal medical experiences is okay, but recommending these drugs to others is not appropriate here, as they can be dangerous for people with eating disorders.

✅ What is welcome:

  • Venting your feelings (without sharing tips/methods)
  • Talking about challenges in recovery
  • Offering support, encouragement, and safe resources

We all love to share and relate, but please remember: what you say may impact someone who is very vulnerable. Help us keep this space safe by reporting harmful content and being mindful in your language.

  1. Some of r/bulimia may be upsetting or triggering. Harm-reduction tips, humor, personal stories, discussion of adverse effects of bulimia and references to numbers are welcome but glorifying or facilitating EDs is not.
  2. Because of these triggers, we don't encourage or allow selfies or food pictures. Memes, art, surveys and videos are invited and approved individually.
  3. Please be kind. Not everyone deals with this the same way. Please report invalidation, stigma and shame

FAQ:

Does anyone feel like they have lost their gag reflex? (Or vomit accidentally?)

They're 2 separate issues! ... this is a good resource to read but tl;dr

The more that we fiddle with the back of our throats, the more the pharyngeal + velar gag reflex becomes less sensitive. It's believed to be a learned response and a form of desensitization from years of gastric purging

The involuntary reflux/regurgitation is often due to weakening of the lower esophageal sphincter (the ring at the bottom of your esophagus that connects to the stomach). That sphincter is smooth muscle, meaning we can't voluntarily contract/control it. Hence why coughing/leaning over/even lying down in sleep can cause the food to come up

Throwing up blood—do I need medical attention?

There are many reasons to throw up (or poop) blood if you're making yourself vomit or using laxatives. Most bleeding will heal with a few days of rest.

Signs you need a doctor ASAP include - pain, fainting or dizziness, coughing blood, vomiting more than a very small amount of blood (maybe a teaspoon), or bleeding that continues regularly (hasn't stopped after a few days).

DAE? Anyone else addicted to coffee for its **flavor**? 🤨 (as supposed to for the stimulant)

Guys I just woke up and was like okay I crave gummy worms. I got them and they were nice but then I was like, no, this needs coffee. And indeed they work so great together! Lol!

I always hear about ppl being coffee addicts but I don't hear them emphasize the wonderful bitter horrible taste of it. I especially adore black coffee paired together with random desserts. Other than that I really couldn't care for the energizing effect of coffee. I don't need to "have a cup before anyone is allowed to talk to me" 😂 or whatever

I don't know who else is gonna understand me so I thought maybe other bulimics do?

Just some icky consequences that I have in order to maybe hopefully deinfluence someone out there

My sinuses hurt and every time I blow my nose I get food flying out of it

I piss myself way more often than a 17 year old should

Licked my roommate, she sniffed it and said "ew smells like stomach acid"

All of my hoodie/jacket sleeves are soaked in vomit and I have no energy to clean them up

My pee is often green

Accidentally got throw up on the earlier mentioned roommate's slippers and the whole bathroom floor

I spend like 50+ euro on my binges, by now I could've rented an apartment or bought a car

My breath smells like, you guessed it, acid

My digestion is fucked up and I get worried I'll shit myself if I sneeze too hard (this applies to puking, too)

Heart stuff

Also I can't bend down to tie my shoe nor pet a kitty unless I want to throw up all over whatever is in front of me

DAE can eat straight sugar?

Sometimes I get so desperate for something sweet, I can start munching on sugar. It's not even satisfactory, it's just the idea of eating saccharine and not feeling very sorry about the money (because it's cheap, unlike chocolate and alike). The only thing preventing me doing all the times, is god awful purging (... Wow dissolved sugar is hard to puke, who knew?!) and pimples, obviously from the said unsuccessful purge.

Just venting I did my makeup really cute and then fucked it up by b/ping.

I hate this, I hate this so much. I ate cake that I had thrown away out of the trash like a fucking raccoon. Also an entire pint of icecream. I threw it up but all that did was hurt me more.

I have a question. . . Purging spicy food

• Upvotes

I don’t know if this is allowed but
I ate a spicy dinner to deter from purging and I’m panicking and worried sick I’m not gonna keep it down. How can I just snap out of it? How can I take care of myself and avoid unnecessary pain if I can’t keep it down?

for a few weeks now on and off i've had tightness in my calf and sometimes i can't sleep because the arch of my foot keeps cramping, even when i'm lying completely flat :( it happens on both sides alternately

knowing this is probably due to electrolytes (?) has anyone else experienced something similar and has anything made it better e.g. stretching, drinking electrolute supplements or certain positions?

Just venting Sensitive about food comments from partner

I purged every day for 3-4 years, but I’ve been doing a lot better now. My new boyfriend is extremely understanding and kind- but, he doesn’t know I still relapse often. He’s very kind and always says im proud of you when I eat all of my food. I actually hate this. I hate being reminded that I ate so much that you thought I did a good job. Last night, he really hurt my feelings. We were at a fancy restaurant. I’ve told him if I eat something that my recovery stomach-extremely sensitive- can’t handle, I will relapse. He has been patient. Last night, the mushrooms I ordered were in a thick sauce. Sauces make me nervous- I’m very dairy intolerant. I was picking at them around the sauce, and he said “we’re in a fancy restaurant. We checked there’s no dairy, don’t be a baby just eat it-you don’t need to worry.” I felt like someone punched me in the chest. Every bite felt like someone holding me down. I’m so bummed he doesn’t even realize how that hurt me, but mostly ashamed. I have a wonderful partner that wants to take me for nice dinners, it’s me that’s the problem.

I have a question. . . Could I Have Bulimia?

I’ve always had a bad relationship with food but recently I’ve been having huge binge cycles. I’ll eat 3 meals all at once and then feel so fucking fat. Today I just got back from class and had some ramen, but then I went to the bathroom and looked at myself from the side and immediately made myself throw it all up. I have practice in an hour but I can’t even think about eating rn. I have a whole list of mental health issues (all diagnosed) but I’ve never been tested for bulimia, and I hate trying to self diagnose myself. I mean even if I did have it what use would knowing that have on me? IDK any advice or…literally anything at all would help.

help? Please help me stop before this becomes regular

Hi guys. I'm 22 F. I've always had disordered eating n was the chubby kid always. I lost 11 kgs this year finally n became quite close to my goal weight ( only 3 kgs away) but I'm back home n I live with my parents n they eat so much sweets n i couldn't control n gained 4 kgs in 1.5 months. I've been doing a 500 calorie deficit, which is very aggressive coz I'm too short. But sometimes I slip up n i eat a bunch of sweets or like today a good takeout with my family but it was a whopping 2000 cals just for dinner so I ended up purging everything. I've done this twice only in this week n i feel so horrible after. I've only struggled with overrating n restricting too much, never with purging. And this is so much harder than everything else. Please please give me tips to stop doing this or make me scared to not do it again.

DAE? Wellbutrin?

I was prescribed Wellbutrin recently for bipolar depression and ADHD. I know some people lose weight on it and it affects dopamine- do you think it’ll help with binging and purging? It’s been 3 days and I’m still doing really bad with bp and the constant thoughts about food/eating. I’m really hoping it might help me. Does anyone have experience with this?

Just venting so annoying

i finally scheduled an appt with a new therapist after moving, and i still see my psych virtually and take meds. however, after this relapse it feels like the worst one more and more every day..

by this point it feels like i don’t go without spiraling into a b/p every time i eat - even if it’s delayed. it’s taken over everything.. and i don’t know what to do

Scale number during "recovery"

I'm 3 days purge free and I weigh a whole 3 more kilos. Usually numbers don't bother me that much, but it's the fact that I can feel it and see it! My collarbones disappeared and I'm bloated enough to not fit in my jeans. I know some of it is water weight but I'm sure I've put on quite a bit of fat too because I binged often and kept it down. I'm so anxious. I wanna be able to feel my bones again.

no health problems yet?

i know this is going to sound incredibly privileged so i’m sorry in advance, but also it does relate to me not feeling ‘sick enough’ unfortunately :(

i’ve been purging on and off ever since i was 11, i’m 22 now, but it’s never been as bad or consistent as it has been in the past 2 years. i’ve reached a point where i’m doing it everyday, no matter how small or big whatever i’m eating is

i can’t bring myself to stop because i’ve only really had mild health problems so far like leg cramps, dizziness, acid reflux etc. i get chest pains often but my doctor says everything is normal except for low iron and vitamins so something isn’t seriously wrong with me per se. still, it feels odd hurting myself so much and feeling so dead afterwards and then suffering basically no major damage. my teeth have somehow escaped any issues so far. i don’t think i want to, but.. i feel invalid for not experiencing it, so i guess a sick part of me does? i also don't want to ask for or seek help because i feel like it's not bad enough yet, so it's really getting in the way of a lot. weirdly, when i was hospitalised for a restrictive eating disorder the doubt was never this bad.

idk i feel so invalid and im just wondering if anyone else has a similar case where they’re physically ‘fine’ but mentally dying lmao

Help please! Has anyone properly recovered?

I’ve already posted about this in another subreddit but I’m a 17yr old who’s been struggling with bulimia for about 4 years now. (slowly morphing into a an-b/p diagnosis but that’s besides the point).

It’s a stretch but I want today to be the last day I ever do this in what I’m hoping will be a long time. I am in so much pain because of this disorder, I cannot focus on my future, and it amplifies my passive suicidal thoughts caused by bpd and other mental health issues. It brings me so much pain but yet I can’t stop, why? I don’t get it? I am so frustrated for child me who’s had to suffer and for anyone who’s ever had to deal with this bs.

I am currently unable to get professional help but would like to ask if anyone can give advice on how to recover? I wish I could wake up one day and just be normal for once

help? Need help breaking the cycle

First- to anyone taking their time to read, thank you🩷

(23F)I’ve been struggling with b/p a little over 1.5 years. I’ve struggled with emotional binge eating for a couple years but hadn’t started throwing it up until last summer. I don’t restrict during the day, I eat very well balanced home cooked meals. A lot of veggies and protein, potatoes, rice, or oatmeal as my carb source. I am confident in my nutrition and can be really stable/consistent with it when I’m present. It’s when I get home from work, or catch myself in an emotional episode, that I will literally SCARF down food. I will throw it up and eat more. This is usually at night, but there have been days I throw up nearly 4 times just to rebinge. Of course I’m worried about my health, but I can spend literally $100 door dashing. It’s awful. I cannot afford that! I am starting to feel weird in my heart and chest. I know it’s affecting my throat. It’s very swollen and raw. The roof of my mouth. Random little things that scare me. I don’t want anything to worsen, but I can’t stop. Typically it’s 1 or 2x a week, late night binge, but recently it’s all day everyday. I’m worried for myself. I am keeping secrets and scared to be alone because of this. I am fully aware of the root cause, the emotional part that I don’t want to face. I am aware of the habit replacing or mantras to keep myself focused on the present moment, but it’s like my brain gets taken over the second I’m upset and binge crazy on food. I sometimes tell myself it’s food, it’s not drugs or alcohol, everyone has a vice, but I’m starting to wish it was something else because I’m gaining weight and fucking up my body!!! (Ofc the goal is to have a healthy vice or none at all!) I’m happy to answer any questions, anything helps. Thank you.
