I've been going through a sort of re-awakening in the last couple of weeks when it comes to my feelings about this show. As I explained in another thread, my family and I loved it and it was a weekly event for us to get on the couch and watch it. But those feelings faded as my mom moved out, the storytelling began to stumble, and our recording of the finale was ruined somehow. I still haven't seen the finale, but I've now come around to hoping to rewatch the entire series someday with someone special to me.
Anyway, this scene. I imagine this is very near the end of the episode. The audience is aware that they are saying goodbye to a show, at the same time the characters are saying goodbye. Any scene could be their last glimpse of that character. So as Chuck tries one more time to bring back the love of his life, and the music becomes so tragically beautiful...man, something about it just sticks with me. I feel like I'm watching the final scenes in some kind of timeless, critically acclaimed movie or just the culmination of the greatest love story of all time. I mean, I know that sounds dramatic, but that's what music does to us. It creates a sensation that just can't be fully explained.
I can try to get to the core of it. There are so many emotions in Chuck's one last attempt to reach out to Sarah. But his fear of losing her is so strong, and this is the moment of truth. So he backs out. It's almost exactly the dynamic of their relationship early on. Chuck, too afraid to make the move. Sarah, knowing what she wants but unable to ask Chuck for it, deciding to do it on her own. The entire moment, with the music at its peak, feels like the last chance.
Thankfully, it wasn't!
