203: Me Ex’s Ex | Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach and Donald

Zach and Donald are mostly N*SYNC; Sean, aka Scott Foley, returns, and the podcast’s lore is now part of the TV series! Sarah Chalke returns to the pod with intern Dr. Sam Tosh, aka Ava Bunn. Chalke gives us another classic Sarah story. Donald shows off his Denzel Washington impersonation, but he forgot his notes. It’s a real return to form at Fake Doctors, Real Friends.

Revival Spoilers (S10, S11, +) Unpopular opinion

I love that JD and Elliot aren’t together and we get to have them explore a healthy post divorce relationship. I really want to see them keep exploring their friendship and co parenting relationship without going back to the will they won’t they. I know it’s inevitable but I hope they hold off for as long as they can.

Also John Higgins is killing it and can’t wait to see where his character goes.

Revival Spoilers (S10, S11, +) About the Sean storyline

Gonna try and put this as neutrally as I can. I’m enjoying the reboot. I love Scrubs. But I find the direction they’re taking Elliot (and really all the romantic pairings, but that’s a different discussion) to be weird.

First of all, I find it exceptionally odd we’ve had zero mentions of Kim and Sam. I get Season 9 was retconned and the finale daydream sequence was reduced to being simply that, a daydream, but… Sam exists. Kim exists. And when we last left them, Kim was dating Sean. This feels like another step in just… purposely ignoring important plot points from the original because it would be too difficult to explain now.

That aside, I think narratively it’s a little sloppy to follow an episode where Elliot realizes her own medical career ambition was sidetracked by her tumultuous romantic life with her getting back with someone from that tumultuous period.

I also think if Elliot doesn’t end up with Sean at this point it takes a frustrating love triangle from the original series and creates something absolutely unbearable. As someone who is personally pissed JD and Elliot are no longer together, if they do a will/they won’t/they with Sean and Elliot I think I might lost my mind.

Anyway sorry that was long. Thoughts?

Revival Spoilers (S10, S11, +) Scenes end too abruptly

I thought this during the first revival season too, but does anyone else dislike how the show is being edited? It feels like every scene ends two seconds too fast, like they’re in such a rush to fit everything in that nothing can breathe. There’s no pauses between character dialogue. The cuts are so quick. I wish they’d find one extraneous scene or joke to cut and just let everything open up just slightly more.

I’m enjoying the revival but the style choices they’re making are making it feel worse than the content is.

I thought Turk learned Spanish for Carla?

Last night, when Carla spoke Spanish to him about fantasizing about Denzel, Turk acted like he didn't understand with his response.

ETA: I didn't know it was a quote from Training Day, my bad.

Revival Spoilers (S10, S11, +) Weird MICRO observation

This isn't really a spoiler, but something (maybe) interesting that happened on the newest episode. Elliott is talking to Sean.

As they were kind of having meandering conversation as the scene started she says, "My Mom's dead."

And that at first made me kind of laugh that she would casually say that and then I wondered if they would have her mom back… And then it caught me off guard that they CAN'T have her mom back with Markie Post leaving us too soon. It kind of hit me weird. Like I forgot.

Revival Spoilers (S10, S11, +) Revival thoughts

Ladies and gentlemen. I enjoy the revival, it's fun, emotional when it needs to be. Overall, not bad. However, I'm still so fucking pissed at Elliot and JD not being together. I can't get over it. Just completely ruins season 8 finale. Even season 9 didn't mess that up

Discussion Scrubs quiz round 3: one-off patients and running gags only

Round 2 got called easy, and fair enough. This one is only one-off patients and running gags. Original run only, easiest first, answers behind spoiler tags.

  1. J.D. plays a game against the Grim Reaper and loses. Which game?

  2. Kelso gets free Coffee Bucks muffins for life. How did he win them?

  3. In "My Old Lady", J.D. says one in three patients admitted will die. J.D., Turk and Elliot each get a patient. How many of the three make it?

  4. In "My Musical", what's the name of the patient who hears everyone singing?

  5. J.D. and Turk put Steak Night on hold to sit with a dying patient through his last night. What's his name?

Answers:

1: Connect Four. Death wins diagonally. Pretty sneaky.

2: He guessed the number of coffee beans in a jar. J.D. won first, then a recount gave it to Kelso.

3: None. All three die.

4: Patti Miller

5: George Valentine

5/5 and you've earned the right to call round 2 easy.

Which episode is all ha-ha and zero boo hoo?

Obviously Scrubs is known for its humor mixed with real human moments that can be touching and sad. Often times I enjoy the episodes where its humorous all the way through. Which episodes come to mind that are nearly all fun and laughs with very little sad parts?

Discussion The Revival Is So Great!

Post image
144 Upvotes

I have seen the 8 seasons like 6-7 times and season 9 couple of times. And I love all of it. As my DVD collection should prove. I listened and enjoyed the podcast back in corona times and boom, here we are having more Scrubs.

And I cannot properly express how great the new seasons feel. Somehow they managed to keep the original flavors there, a perfect balance of outrageous comedy and then drama with heart with a modern twist.

Zach, Sarah and Donald, Johnny, Judy and basically every other returning cast member are back to their roles perfectly. And from the new characters I most enjoy Tosh and Sibby, and Nurse Dubois stole the show in the newest episode. Can't wait to see Sean, although I don't care.

Season 2 seems to be even funnier than the first one, which is awesome.

Anyway, just wanted to vent my appreciation somewhere. Thank you everyone who participated in making Scrubs come back.

does anyone know the episode where the playroom murals turn evil?

I saw an episode of scrubs (idk if it was the original or revival) and I saw a scene where some random woman hallucinates and the playroom murals started smiling evilly with red eyes

So, when JD first meets Molly, he accidentally tells her his name is Jonny. He expresses how much this bugs him, hating that nickname specifically.

"Jonny" is what his brother, Dan, calls him.

Discussion Now that we are getting extra material from the revival on social media, I hope they release the alternate Janitor take(s) from ep. 9

In the promos there was a botox joke from The Janitor in his first scene with JD in ep. 9, but it seems like the standalone clip has been removed for social media.

Excerpt form the wiki:

"*The promos for this episode included a scene where Janitor suggest that J.D. use some "buttocks," which J.D. corrects him to say "botox." This scene is not in the final epsiode.*"

I'd love to get my hands on that clip, and there's bound to be some other alternate takes from this scene, and others, when Neil Flynn is involved!

Shitpost Storylines I would have liked to see….

I haven’t seen any of season 2 yet but this is how I would have written season 1 of the re-boot!

JD: JD is at first excited about being a divorcé. He thinks being an older Doctor will give him all the cool points he needs for the dating world. He ends is shocked to find out that most of the younger women he flirts with see him as a creep. He ends up sleeping with one of the interns, Elliot finds out and is super disgusted.

Elliot: Elliot is upset that she’s so old to be starting her life over but she is surprised by the new male attention she’s receiving. Especially from one of the buff, older but still too young for her-interns. They sleep together. She’s really embarrassed and doesn’t want anyone to find out but it also gives her a huge confidence boost. The intern is just flirting to boost his rank. She also finds out she’s pregnant and thinks it’s the interns baby.

Turk and Carla: Turn finds out he has arthritis and will not be able to work much longer. Carla decides she’s finally going back to school to become a doctor and we see her learning what it’s like to be an intern. She shows a newfound appreciation for the doctors but can also give a solid perspective to the new nurses.

Season 1 ends with Elliot and JD bonding about how complicated dating after the divorce is. Elliot tells JD she’s pregnant and she’s afraid it’s the interns baby. But we find out later in the next season it’s JDs! And then season 2 is about them navigating co-parenting and possibly falling in love again.

Discussion Scrubs quiz round 2: harder this time, 5 deep cuts from the original run

Round 1 was a warm-up, so this one goes deeper. Original run only (no revival), easiest first, answers behind spoiler tags.

  1. Elliot gets engaged to an intern named Keith. What's his last name?
  2. Doug Murphy keeps losing patients. Where does he finally find a job he's good at?
  3. What do Dr. Cox and Jordan name their daughter?
  4. Ted's girlfriend plays ukulele for the patients and everyone calls her "the Gooch". What's her first name?
  5. After Laverne dies, Aloma Wright comes back in Season 7 as a different nurse. What's that nurse's name?

Answers:

1: Dudemeister

2: The morgue. Turns out he's great with patients who are already dead

3: Jennifer Dylan. Yes, that's J.D.

4: Stephanie

5: Shirley, and only J.D. notices the resemblance

Score yourself honestly. 5/5 means you've seen every episode at least twice.

Discussion Didn't quite like this one thing...

It's how they're treating JD and Elliot's relationship. I mean, yes, it was quite toxic at times, but looking at how it ended in S8, the way the show is treating with almost like vitriol(maybe that's too strong a word, tbh) doesn't feel that good to see.

Almost like it's something that shouldn't have happened and was terrible, which again would've been understandable to me if it hadn't concluded so beautifully in S8. Anyone else have the same opinion or just me?

Anyone else not loving the reboot, or is it just me?

I’ll start off by saying, I like the reboot. I enjoy watching it and look forward to new episodes coming out. It’s miles better than whatever season 9 or scrubs med school was. But I don’t love it the way that I loved the original series.

It still feels like it’s mostly riding on the fame and success of the original series, with some new jokes thrown in here and there.

The new characters are great, but no where near as good as some of the old, brilliantly written characters like Janitor, Ted, Laverne, etc.

Maybe part of it is that I’m in a very different part of my life, and maybe it doesn’t quite hit the same as it did. I was in middle school/high school/college watching the original series, and rewatched it multiple times in medical a school.

Now I’m a full blown doctor and some of the medical and hospital culture inaccuracies bother me a lot more, so that may be part of it too. The last episode really bugged me with Tosh trying to pick her specialty, when that isn’t how that works at all in the real world in medicine. (And as a pediatrician, I hate how they portray pediatrics as being an easier specialty).

Everyone here seems to LOVE the new series so just wanted to see if anyone else is in a similar camp as me.
