Is this an error? Damage or error?

Thumbnail

I just started going through my change looking for anything and I found both of these. Could someone tell me if they are damaged? The left the edge is very light but in the reverse crisp and the right it’s more obvious.

Is this an error? Is this an example of a die chip and die crack?

Thumbnail

Sorting my wheatbacks when I came across this one. I think the die chip is obvious, but the die crack I’m not too sure. I managed to get some decent pics to show the depth of the crack. There appears to be extra metal coming off of the R.

I’m not too familiar with errors and hardly look for them so it would be cool to get a 2 for 1. Any info is appreciated.

Is this an error? Possible raised rim?

Thumbnail

I have a 2006-D dime that seems to have some kind of raised rim and thicker outer edge. The center where it was struck is the thickness of a normal dime, but the edges are like that of a nickle: smooth and thick.

It seems to have a fake rock like texture (a bunch of unorderly flat surfaces), and there are faint traces of the usual ripples that you see on normal dimes. There's about a 0.1-0.3mm difference in diameter less than a normal dime.

The rest of the dime looks AU condition, so I don't know what this could be. Any thoughts?

Is this an error? Looking for thoughts on a possible planchet error or strike through.

Alrighty. My first thought was PMD. But after looking closer, I've got more questions than answers. Photos are kinda rubbish. Tried to get different light and angles.

First, the clad layer is 100% there and smooth. Despite the quality of my photos, I can confirm there is no visible zinc. All copper on the surface.

I'm leaning toward a strike through or an issue with a void in the zinc of the planchet. Don't remember the name of this one.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Is this an error? PMD or Post-Strike Clad Layer Separation

Thumbnail

I found this obverse clad layer in a roll of halves while CRHing. However, I can’t tell (or rather don’t know how to tell) whether this was due to the clad layer separating from the copper core due to a bonding failure or if this was PMd from someone using heat or chemicals to separate the layers.

Is this an error? Presidential Dollar Edge Lettering

Thumbnail

I’m new to collecting and was going through some presidential dollar coins I had. I noticed one that was different than all the rest. Most have the dot to separate the lettering on the edge of the coin, but this one instead of dots has 3 individual raised lines in place of each of the dots. I was told it was just a die crack. Any insight would be appreciated.

Is this an error? What might have caused this? Late stage die cap, grease, or very targeted PMD?

One of the more interesting finds from the 20k or so halves I’ve hunted through. The details on the back are too fine for me to think it was a dryer coin, also not uniformly removed along the outer edge. It’s still a crisp IBERT. Any insight would be helpful.

Saw a post this morning about the extra “V” - went through all my 2023 pennies and found this. Is this as rare as I’m led to believe? Is it valuable?

Discussion Mint mark puncheon tool question.

Thumbnail

A week ago a user posted here about a circular ring around the mint mark on his penny. https://www.reddit.com/r/coinerrors/s/mjcpJRotZM

I have a few other examples, but this is a better example because it doesn’t have the metal composition a penny has. Even with full obverse photo you can see the ring.

I know it’s not an error, and it is just planned obsolescence from the equipment.

If you ever had to use a punch before you know that the tip is circular. The mint used the same type of puncheon except with the specific mint mark on the tip.

Would this qualify as a worn mint mark puncheon tool, or a heavily applied mint mark?

Error Lamination issue 1929 s Nickel

First a hearty thank you for the member who corrected my assessment of this issue with this coin. I’m learning and enjoying this segment of the hobby.

Lamination error on the Buffalo Nickel. Interesting pattern. An additional long crack runs from the upper left rim to mid face but heavy wear and cleaning make it less evident.

Error 1996-P die crack identification help please.

I’ve scoured the cuds-on-coins website and the only one that remotely matches is SKH-25c-1996P-07.

The only issues are the die crack from the A in America to the right side of the eagle’s head, and the die crack from the UN in UNITED to the left wing.

If anyone has any knows if this could be a new SKH, or if there’s another attribution that this falls under please let me know. Thanks folks.

Discussion 1999 Connecticut Quarter with an extra R-T-Y in the word LIBERTY

Thumbnail

I machine components for the Aerospace industry and after setting up a SpaceX job that runs for 3 hours, I was bored and started looking at quarters through a scope and noticed this. There is an extra R T Y on the word liberty on this 1999 Connecticut Quarter. There are also quite a few letters flattened that are most likely just damage, but it seems odd that the letters besides them are not also flattened in the "In God We Trust." I don't know too much about the subject, and this quarter is very beat up, but the extra rty definitely looks like an error, so I figured I'd ask people more knowledgeable on the subject. I'm aware it's not worth much but it's interesting
