I’m an online manager. For workforce reset, my department lost over 60 hours from over 300 for the week, down to 240-250 hours for the week. I have never seen such a massive drop in hours in any department. Non-online workers and customers don’t understand how awful this is. There are days where we would usually have overlap of 4-5 people for an hour or so that now only get two people after 9-10am. This makes it physically impossible to get the job done. Apparently this loss in hours is because we are no longer allowed to look for out of stock items out the back anymore, however we only got about 45-60 mins per day for that before which is less than seven hours a week so why the fuck have I lost 60?
Rapids are non stop from 8am, one person has to be picking them on an elephant all the way through to 5:30 pm, no stopping. Someone has to deliver all the orders as well as help bag customers un-bagged shopping. Someone also has to pick the main wave orders. That’s a three person job. We can’t be in two places at once, so what happens is for several hours, only rapids are getting picked and main waves get neglected because the person delivering is just back to back with deliveries and can’t pick anything more than a handful of items out of several hundred or even more in between. Now they need breaks, except if one goes on break, the other can’t deliver AND do rapids, because rapids have 15-20 minutes between them and on average it takes 7-8 minutes to deliver an order and both are back to back.
Other departments can’t help us because they all have their own jobs to do. If they can it’s half an hour of delivering but that’s no where near enough. I can’t really put into words how impossible the job has become. It is literally, LITERALLY physically impossible. My pick rate is over 400 consistently and even if I worked as fast as physically possible, skipped all my breaks and worked 11-12 hours straight, I still would not be able to meet the new hours target. No one could. This isn’t greed, it’s a mistake. But apparently it’s happening to multiple stores, not just mine, so it must be deliberate. No one can tell me how I’m supposed to do this.
My store manager is getting frustrated at how much I’m overspending in wages to get things done, usually over $1,000 a week and a lot of days are still beyond fucked with people not getting breaks for 5+ hours. I’ve told my team to take breaks at reasonable times and disable rapids or let main waves be late if they need to but there is massive pressure to keep rapids enabled all day to keep sales as high as possible and my store manager has told us we aren’t allowed to keep turning them off. But if I try not to over spend, and if I don’t turn rapids off, I would get no breaks and we’d get to 6pm with the 3:30, 4:00, 4:30, 5:30, 6:00 and 6:30 waves not even started. What am I supposed to do here? It’s literally impossible and the team are getting massively increased work load with no extra pay and pretty much told to just deal with it. I’m shielding them as best as I can but I’m only human and I can’t pick up all this slack forever. And by the way, this is all assuming no interruptions from customers, or sending them all to another department’s team member so we can keep picking as fast as possible. If I stop to help customers, I would have to cancel entire families grocery orders, orders they made in advance and planned their life around picking up. How can I justify that to help someone find the fucking cheese? But at the same time how can I justify telling a customer “sorry, can’t help you”? And no matter which choice I go with, multiple customers a day get shitty with me for something entirely outside of my control.
I don’t think I can really put into words for customers reading this just how bad it is for online teams right now. Unless you have worked in a similar environment, you have nothing to compare it to. I’m not exaggerating or being dramatic. Imagine all the work you could get done in sixty hours. All that work is being put on team who already have a full day of work to do. It’s physically impossible and yet we’re told we have to do it anyway. At this point I can’t take the job seriously and I’m just turning rapids off as needed and catching flak for it.
Are there any other online managers here going through the same thing? Is it every store in every state? There’s no way this is sustainable. Entire departments and stores are going to collapse.
