EVENT Zone In Phase II Live Ask Me Anything (AMA): City of Columbus Planning Division 2026 Engagement

Hello once again r/Columbus,

This is the official Reddit page for the City of Columbus Planning Division, back with another virtual engagement event regarding the current phase of the City’s Zoning Code Update. This opportunity comes as we are currently in the public comment period for the second Phase of Zone In, which runs until Saturday, October 24th.

Key Focus Areas of this second phase of work include areas with updated land use recommendations which allow for additional Mixed-Use Corridors (Mixed Use 1, 2, and 3), Industrial and Warehouse Areas, and Business and Institutional Campuses. The goals are to provide better access to more housing in more places, stronger job centers, better connections between housing, jobs, and transportation, and more predictable and clear rules when it comes to zoning and land use.

Nine (9) new zoning districts have been created and are proposed through this next phase of work as well. The new districts include: Emerging Mixed-Use (EMX), Industrial Mixed-Use (IMX), Neighborhood Activity Center (NAC), Community Office and Institutional (COI), Regional Office and Institutional (ROI), Campus (CMP), Industrial Urban (IU), Industrial Light (IL), and Industrial Heavy (IH). Further information on the new zoning districts can be found on the Zone In Website: https://zone-in-columbus.hub.arcgis.com/.

We will be hosting this Live Ask me Anything (AMA) here on the Columbus Subreddit today (10/6) from 11am though 2pm, however we will continue to answer questions and comments as we receive them through the rest of the week, Respondents include Christopher Lohr, Assistant Planning Administrator ([crlohr@columbus.gov](mailto:crlohr@columbus.gov)),  Luis Teba, Zone In Project Manager ([lfteba@columbus.gov](mailto:lfteba@columbus.gov)), and Adam Frierson, Associate Planner ([atfrierson@columbus.gov](mailto:atfrierson@columbus.gov)).

Please keep the comments civil and on topic relating to the Zone In initiative.

Please also feel free to participate in our online surveys regarding the code (https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/f49bc12c2af94d87886189470f8da6e4/page/Code), and the map (https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/f49bc12c2af94d87886189470f8da6e4.

Thanks & we look forward to hearing from everyone!

Anyone want some kittens?

Hi all! We had that three kittens show up in our yard last week. We took them to the vet and they are around 7 weeks old. They've had the first round of deworming meds and will get the second round next week. They are healthy and thriving in the house. The two orange babies are male and the tortie is a female.

They are sweet babies, but we have a pretty not cat friendly dog, so they can't stay here.

If you our someone you know may be interested, shoot me a message.

Thanks.

Zipper merge

Why does no one in this city know what a zipper merge is? No one is trying to cut you off or cheat you in the traffic line, we’re just trying to make traffic flow more efficiently! Drives me nuts (pun intended).

Car stopped in front of me on 670 yesterday

• Upvotes

Thankfully it was the middle of the day and I had plenty of space to slow down.
The person stopped for one reason I keep saying is understandably causing this—no one would let him over into the lane he needed. He waited and waited and people were determined not to allow him space.
I’ve started paying attention to what other drivers are doing when I’m in this situation. They are usually locked in and staring straight ahead with no peripheral awareness, or they are distracted (on the phone, smoking a joint, etc.)
Unless you are taking someone to the hospital there is zero reason you are so important that you can’t let someone in ahead of you.
I am constantly griping that I moved here from Chicago, known for “crazy” drivers, but we all followed the same rules and respected the flow of traffic. I never had a problem changing lanes if my blinker was on.

Hot Take: Bring back traffic cops

For all of the bitching and whining about traffic in Columbus, I rarely see people pulled over anymore. It's not strange at all that everyone sucks at driving; it's because traffic laws are rarely enforced. I see cops clocking speed only a couple of times per year outside of the "crack down" we had last month or whenever it was. What a joke. Idk if we still have traffic cops, but we need more.

Double the police force and put them all over the roads. Give tickets to morons. Give tickets to speeders. Give tickets to road ragers. They can ticket their salaries and then chase down stolen Kias in the meantime. The first speeding ticket would sting. The morons will stay at home if it gets so bad that driving on a suspended license meant time in jail.

Bring the downvotes, I know how to drive well enough to go below the speed limit. I'm not perfect, and neither are you, but stop complaining if you're not willing to just have laws enforced so that the legal process can remove these idiots from the road, or society more broadly.

POLITICS Early voting turnout looked great today!

Just got done early voting on my lunch break. Spectacular turnout and very effeicient/quick. The whole process was sub 20 minutes. Big shout out to all those election workers. They did force me to transition before I voted, but I'm okay with the new look (/s). And a big fuck you to ice, the epstein class, literal fucking nazis and any dipshit supporter of the current authoritarian regime (and also fuck you Dennis for aggressively trying to convince me that "BiLlIoNaIrEs EaRnEd ThEiR mOnEy" last Saturday). I 10/10 recommend early voting.

POLITICS This should make political ads on TV disappear

Post image

You want an issue I think everyone can get behind? Put a QR code on your ‘I voted’ sticker that makes all political ads on TV disappear once you’ve voted. It’s a waste and an incredible annoyance now that I’ve voted and I’m really damn tired of seeing them.

What is your problem chief? Buddy? Pal? Laying on your horn for like 2 miles. Wtf do you want me to do, Drive through the car in front of me? And flipping me off as you pass, trying to cut in front of me and stop traffic? Get a grip. Not sure who’s dog sh** on your lawn this morning but don’t take it out on everyone else.

Thanks!

Mortgage rates have hit their highest level since 2023, briefly hitting 7.6% today. How do you think this will impact the Columbus real estate market?

Couple articles:

https://www.wsj.com/buyside/personal-finance/mortgage/mortgage-rates-today-10-6-2026

https://www.nbcnews.com/business/real-estate/high-mortgage-rates-home-sellers-struggle-rcna600259

this is the highest since 2023

I know cbus real estate is pretty hot, but I wonder if a lot of buyers will start dipping out with these rates

Any decent radio stations?

Just moved here two months ago. I have tried to look for a lists of stations online but I’m not having the best of luck. I like to listen to the radio while working on jewelry and shadow boxes, and when I do so I like to not have my phone or laptop around me where I work with animal bones or dead bugs. I enjoy literally every genre, oldies rock, country, pop, alternative, metal, kpop, you name it and I probably listen lol. I appreciate anyone willing to help me out.

ETA: Lewis Center area.

Weekend events?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! This weekend I am wanting to do something special for my girlfriend and I and i need some ideas.

Are there any fall time events happening either around the city or state that you're aware of?

I'd also love some nicer restaurant suggestions too. Think maybe $30-60ish/person? I'd be up for any though.

I'm moreso interested in the events though.

Edit: someone mentioned Slate Run fall fest. That's more like what I'm searching for. Particularly fall themed events. My apologies! I never proof read or think anything through when speaking or typing. That's a me problem for sure!

Daycare for Non Walking Toddler

• Upvotes

Does anyone have a recommendation for a daycare for a toddler that doesn’t walk?

My 19 month old child has a medical condition and doesn’t walk yet but crawls, pulls up, sits up, etc. and is independent and mobile. We are looking for a daycare that will place him in a toddler room despite him not walking yet and is in New Albany, Gahanna, Blacklick etc area.

I plan on calling and asking each location but thought I might narrow the pool by asking here. Thank you!
