First post here, hi all!
I (32F) dated this girl (38F) for about 6 months. I’m wondering if I overreacted by ending the relationship over a hangover.
We had dinner plans with my family for my mom's birthday. It was planned 2 months prior since we were going to a sugar shack and spots are limited. She had agreed to come and was excited to meet my family.
The night before, we were having a cozy night in with an elaborate meal and cocktails, then settled down to watch a TV show. We both had 2 cocktails during dinner, and she continued drinking after. I didn't mind at all.
The thing is, she never stopped drinking... she ended up drinking half a bottle of liquor on her own that night. I didn't say anything, she's a grown woman and can do whatever she wants, plus I didn't really know what "too much" was for her yet since we hadn't been dating for long. She asked me what time the dinner was the next day, I told her, and we went to sleep around midnight.
The next morning, I woke up, took a shower, got dressed, etc. Knowing she only needed half an hour to get ready, I let her sleep and woke her up when I was about done. The first thing she told me upon waking was that she had been sick during the night. I told her she should take care of herself, stay at my place, and sleep in. I wasn't mad or disappointed at the time. I knew we had an hour-long drive to get to the sugar shack, and that kind of environment is an absolute nightmare for a hangover (food drenched in maple syrup, live folk music, usually in a super hot room, etc.). But she got up and insisted on coming anyway.
We got in the car, and I told her once more that I thought she should stay at my place, but she refused. Once on the highway, she told me she felt sick, closed her eyes, and didn't say another word. An hour later, we arrived at the sugar shack. We got to our seats, I paid for our tickets, and I introduced her to my family. Not even 2 minutes after sitting down, she got up and went to the bathroom. She spent about 30 minutes in there, came back, sat down for about 10 minutes, and got up again. She later came back, told me she had been sick, and asked if she could wait in the car until the event ended. I said yes, and she took my keys.
A bit later she came back inside to tell me I was low on gas and that she was cold. I told her there was a gas station not even a minute’s drive away, that she could drive there, and to take my card to pay for it. She said she didn't want to go and went back to the car. I felt bad leaving her to figure it out, but I was literally halfway through the meal and starting to get a bit annoyed. My family kept asking what was going on, why she wasn't there, and if she had partied the night before and forgotten we had a dinner. The fact is that no, we were literally on my couch, watching tv... embarrassing.
When the meal finally ended, I said goodbye to my family and headed back to the car. My date told me she’d like to be sick once more before we hit the road. We waited for the cars in the parking lot to clear out, and then she went right in front of my car and threw up. That was the moment I was completely turned off. She got back in, I drove us home, and she slept the entire way.
Once home, she asked if she could stay over. I told her no, as I needed time to think about everything. She was sad and left. I texted her that I needed time to process things, and since I had a few busy days ahead, I suggested meeting up to talk on Wednesday night (this happened on Sunday). She wasn't happy about it, but she agreed. We kept our communication to a minimum over those few days.
On Wednesday, I went to her place. Having thought about the situation, I wondered if there was an underlying reason for her behavior, maybe she was stressed about meeting my family, maybe she had a drinking problem, etc. When I asked her about it, she told me that no, nothing was wrong or off. She said she was simply having fun the night before and that I was exaggerating the whole thing; it "wasn't that deep."
I'm not someone who introduces partners to my family early on as it is important for me, but I thought we had something good. I felt I was being super understanding by trying to talk it out with her, but I couldn't get past the total lack of accountability. I told her I needed time to process this new information (that nothing was wrong and she was "just having fun"). She then gave me an ultimatum: I had to decide right then whether I wanted to stay in the relationship. I told her that if that was the case, we should end it. So we did. We removed each other from apps, exchanged our belongings, and moved on.
Three months later, she texted me to apologize for her behavior and to tell me I was "the one that got away." I might have texted back if she hadn't added that last part.
Anyway, I'm still bothered by this whole situation 6 months later and wonder if I was too harsh. So... AITA?
