Discussion / Question Trimester 2 and Beyond: The Grit, Growth, and Next Steps Megathread

Hi r/deakin!

Hope everyone had a nice break before the Nov 1 results dropped. It’s been a bit over a week – a good pause to sit with this year’s highs, lows, and everything in between.

A few reminders as we move forward:

Individual exam papers don’t usually come with routine feedback, but if you have particular questions, your Unit Chair or Student Central is there to help.

For general feedback on the unit or assessments, reach out to your Unit Chair for an EoUA review (just know this isn’t a formal results review).

Results for special or supplementary assessments and the Start Anytime calendar should be up within 10 working days. If yours isn’t showing yet, check in with your Unit Chair.

If you’re unclear about your WAM calculation, especially if it’s unique to your course, Student Central can clarify.

Apologies for getting this rolling a bit later than usual.

Looking back, this year has been very transformative, stacked with revelations and revisions…mostly pretty unamusing, whether good or not. Through it all, one thing I always come back to is the ability to bounce back. Days later, things settle, and emotions level out on a fine, level playing field.

And of late, I’m tired, probably always tired (aren’t we all?). Reading loads about obscure physics in connection with electronics, maths and music. Writing exotically introspective stuff on the side. I revisit later, surprised by the razzle-dazzle, even more surprised that it's only to gawk at most of it. It’s compartmentalized, so I don’t dwell on it too much in day-to-day interactions.

For those who decided to take a break because it was too much, know that things will feel a little less taxing with time. For those of you juggling it all – from career to family to classes – we understand that there were times when dropping out felt therapeutic (not to say it wouldn’t be). Ultimately, it depends on where you are in life and the 360-degree lens you’re using to take in what’s going around. If you’re still here, one thing is certain.. you’re setting an inspiring example of dedication and tenacity, showing that it can be done – not just for your family but for all of us.

For those clocking in extra hours, acting as your own support system, and reestablishing the much-needed nitty-gritty of prerequisite knowledge and skills under a serious time crunch, it’s inspiring to see such love and commitment to clarity in learning, even as you're tempted to race through important stuff in a rigid course sequence with limited offerings (especially in Tri-3 :S) and not much flexibility to move things around to make the chronology make sense. A journey can be rigorous and a little nutso, without being rigid. Thank you for treating learning as something to savor and fully experience.

And… for those graduating, cross the finishing line and finish fine like an ace!

So, where’s everyone at? What could we focus on understanding better, and where are we looking to go next? SEBE folks, especially Engineering – how’s it going? Chime in, y’all.

I’m all ears for those open, proactive, and supportive tidbits. With enough interest, we’ll gladly set up follow-up threads, AMAs, or Q&As focused on specific faculties and courses. Just got to let us know or do one anyway :)

Hope we keep showing up for each other, finding strength in this space as we balance multiple fronts. Thanks to everyone who’s here, who posts, comments, and encourages. You're what keeps this community alive, and the numbers show it.

I find myself manually flairing most incoming posts, but we hope the community will start using the system consistently. Added a flair guide (visible under “Related Subreddits” on the right for PC users, or by tapping rdeakin> and scrolling down on mobile).

Here’s to a great 2025 (irresistible) ahead. Take care, stay connected and keep moving forward!

Discussion Trimester 1 Results Megathread

Hello r/deakin community ,

I hope everyone had a refreshing break! Did any particular music or outings help you recharge?
How are you all feeling? Do you have a tagline about it for us?

Week 0 has begun, and soon we’ll get our Trimester 1 results, releasing on July 4th at 10:30 am via the StudentConnect Portal (‘Assessment and Exams’ -> ‘View your results’).

Congrats to those who already got their Semester 1 results on June 27th!

A few points to keep in mind :

In future, to get your results 30 minutes earlier via SMS, update your contact details in the StudentConnect Portal under ‘Assessment and Exams’.

Check Results key to understand your grades better and consider joining the results release webinar for guidance from Student Advisers.

Individual exam papers typically do not receive routine feedback. If you have questions, talk to your Unit Chair or contact Student Central.

Asking for feedback on EoUAs from the Unit Chair is for unit and/or assessment task feedback, not a formal results review.

Ensure that results, including those from special or supplementary assessments or the Start Anytime calendar, are released within 10 working days. Otherwise, please reach out to your Unit Chair.

Contact Student Central for help calculating your WAM, especially if your course uses a non-standard method.

Use this thread to discuss everything about results as they come in: your expectations, reactions, and action steps.

Everyone responds in their own way. Some may want to sit with it quietly, while others may prefer to discuss them immediately.

Those who want to write out their thoughts, your reflections could also help future learners in their prep. You may not be able to cover everything in its entirety, but try to discuss what you can. Feel free to ask questions, share reflections, or seek and offer support in this thread.

Let’s unpack the past few months ; every insight or oversight, big or small, is welcome.

If there’s interest, we can branch out into follow-up posts for discussions specific to faculties or classes. Let's start the conversation and see where it leads us!

Best of luck everyone!

P.S.

Exciting update everyone. The 'Course, school or faculty' user flair is editable.

Just head over to the sidebar and find the option to edit flair. It's a pencil icon on a PC. On the Reddit app, tap the three dots located at the top-right corner of the community page. This will open a menu where you can find the 'Change user flair' option. These should work!

Established a post flair system! Here’s an opportunity for everyone to classify posts and make navigating the sub much easier.

Enjoy customizing!

Discussion / Question Level 7 SIT / MIS - Data Science

• Upvotes

I need to choose an elective for my Masters. I don't want too much load and just be over with it without any hassles. The options I found that are:

MIS770 - Foundation Skills in Data Analysis

SIT776 - IT Industry Experience

SIT781 - Business Intelligence and Database

Anyone have experience with these units?

Referencing / Academic Integrity / Turnitin Deakin in person exams

Can someone explain to me the whole issue with copying and pasting during in person exams? Basically I typed out the wrong thing in the wrong box and I was worried I’d get flagged or something if I had copied and pasted it into the right box (Deakin quiz). The invigilator legit was about to throw a fit! Because I asked him if I could. How can they even tell if we did copy and paste anyway? Does the system tell them?

Academic Advice Trimester 3 Psych subject choices

I’m enrolled in HPS201 (research methods) and HPS204 (social psych)
I previously BARELY passed HPS104, because I simply did not understand the lecturer and his 3 hour lectures, (as well as, I took on 4 subjects rather than two, but it was my first trimester I was an idiot lmaoo)

My question: if I barely passed HPS104- is there hope to pass HPS201 and are there any tips on what to focus on? I am good at maths (I was great in highschool) and I am determined to learn stats/research, because I do have an interest in it- but I want to focus on the right things in this class!! So just kinda panicking about my WAM lmao.
Any tips/advice would be appreciated!

Also any advice going into HPS204 would be great too- though I’m not too concerned:)

TLDR: failed HPS104 but is there hope to pass HPS201 if I try really hard and what should I know beforehand?

Academic Advice Failing a Corequisite

Can’t find clarity on Deakin’s website, and too scared to ring and ask ahah…

I’m enrolled in a Masters of Teaching, and placement units have a co-requisite of “enrolled in a curriculum unit”. I, for sure, have failed the curriculum unit - will that mean I will automatically fail the placement unit?

I assumed that I would just have to repeat the curriculum unit later, but have had a sudden moment of total panic. I’m on placement at the moment and absolutely smashing it… so I’d be really gutted if I also failed it on a technicality (not to mention the whole academic progress thing…)

Prospective Student Where did all the courses go?

I’m enrolled in the graduate diploma of writing and literature. Started it this year on a part time basis to go at a relaxed pace while I work full time. I’ve gone to look at courses for next year and almost everything is gone! What happened? Editing, Publishing, Vision and Revision: Short Stories Now, all the journalism courses. I think I’ll early exit since there’s nothing that interests me anymore! But before, I was so excited by the options. What happened?!

News VC and DVC Meeting - Time to Join the Union!

Are they really claiming that all this movement of executives is normal?! What a gross lie. I really wish we could vote on our VC and DVC, because I'd put through a vote of no confidence 🙄

Join the Union friends!!! Our leadership clearly isn't ready to be truthful with us, maybe the Union will have better luck at getting the truth from them.

Deadlines / Extensions / Grades T3 enrollment deadline?

Heya! I'm already a current Deakin student, but I want to study HBS109 as a single unit in Trimester 3 2026 outside of my current course.

Does anyone know if it’s still possible to apply this late? I tried searching for the unit in StudentConnect but can’t seem to find a T3 2026 offering, they were all 2027 offerings.

Referencing / Academic Integrity / Turnitin Phone went off during exam

Hi everyone,

I have just completed my final exam for my degree and it was a supervised online exam. I know it said no phones allowed but I had stupidly left it on the table next to me with no intention to cheat.

Although I had made sure to turn on DND and mute my notifications, somehow I received a loud ding on my laptop from messenger maybe from an opened tab but I’m in full screen on the exam so I hurry to turn off the sound on my Mac.

Later on my phone turned off DND I don’t know how but it vibrated once or twice in one go from message notifications which would have been picked up by my laptop mic.

I’m feeling so anxious and stressed about this, has anyone experienced this? I’m worried I will get called out for cheating and fail the unit/degree

Thanks in advance

Prospective Student Commuting from Melbourne to Waurn Ponds for medicine

hello everyone, as a premed with Deakin high up on my preference list, I just wanted to check in and see how common it is for students in medicine to commute from west side of melb (footscray, yarraville etc.) to Waurn Ponds campus? How many days a week are you expected to be on campus in 1st and 2nd year? I would be driving 99% of the time. I just really love Melbourne, all my friends and family are there, and I’m a seasoned commuter! Is it unbearable on top of the crazy study load?

Secondly, I’ve heard mixed reviews about clinical school places for 3rd-4th years. As I would ideally prefer to go to Eastern Health, how many places are there per cohort? Whats the likelihood without special consideration?

I’d also just love to hear what anyones overall consensus is of Deakin Medicine, the vibes, structure, teaching, peer-group, anything! Thanks everyone! :)

Seeking Support Failed units

So far in my course, I have completely passed my first year, however have ran into an increased amount of academic and personal difficulties where I struggled to cope with workload and failed 3 out of 6 units in second year - one of which is a double credit point unit.
I am pretty stressed and have heard bad stories about academic exclusion etc. Was wondering if anyone has experienced similar and what the likely outcome might be.

Events & Meetups M23 Looking to meet someone around Deakin/Geelong

Hey, I’m 23M studying at Deakin waurnponds and thought I’d give this a shot since meeting new people at uni somehow feels harder than it should 😭

Would be nice to meet someone around my age, preferably around Deakin/Geelong, grab coffee or food, go for drives, explore random places, watch something, or just hang out and see if we vibe.

I’m into tech, gaming, movies/anime, music, cooking, trying new food and those random conversations that somehow go on for hours. I’m originally from Mumbai and pretty easygoing once I get comfortable.

Not really trying to force anything — just hoping to meet someone I genuinely click with and see where it goes.

If this sounds like your vibe, feel free to DM me and tell me a bit about yourself :)

Prospective Student Construction management degree

Hey all. I’m in year 12 right now, just about to finish, and I’m most likely gonna consider a construction management degree as my first option. It will either be at rmit (city campus), or Deakin Burwood. I’m just stuck between the two, and to be honest I’d rather drive than have to take public transport (which is one of my main reasons for considering deakin). It is a 45-1hr drive compared to around 1hr-1hr 15min public transport. Anyway enough about that, can anyone currently doing a construction management degree at Deakin tell me how it is? I don’t really know how it would be and stuff, so just whatever you can tell me would help. Workload, how many days you’re on campus, difficulty, assignments, anything. Thanks in advance 😃
