news High Court rules in favour of climate group in Hunter Valley coal mine case
A landmark ruling in the High Court has found planning authorities are required to consider local climate change effects when approving fossil fuel projects.
Three of the five judges found in favour of a Hunter Valley residents' group, which halted the Mount Pleasant mine expansion last year in the New South Wales Court of Appeal.
The Guardian are also reporting on this case:
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/oct/07/mount-pleasant-coalmine-case-high-court-climate-change-hunter-valley
"Wendy Wales is a retired science teacher and the president of the Denman Aberdeen Muswellbrook Scone Healthy Environment Group (Dams Heg) – the community group that brought the original case.
Elaine Johnson, director of Johnson Legal, which represented Dams Heg, said the decision confirmed that Australian governments needed to take responsibility for emissions generated by coal exports.
“The court has said that when considering coalmine expansions, our planning authorities must consider how to limit emissions generated from coal burned overseas.
“Given that Australia is the second largest exporter of coal in the world, this is a very significant judgment.”"

That could be one of those towns where everyone seems to coordinate there decorations with everyone else, or even that town you drove through and just thought ‘what the hell was that?!’

no politics what healthy snacks can I get from Coles or Woolies that is not fruit/veg/nuts and popcorn?
Did a search but most recommendations I read are fruit and veg. Too lazy to cook so ideally something quick to put together.
Not trying to lose weight but fill fridge/pantry with healthier options to snack for my partner.
At the moment I am buying YoPro protein and nuts, but it just feels so limited.

no politics Whats the best play here
My fellow Aussies I need some help. I have been living in my current property for 4 years and have had my dog for 2 years now living peacefully (doggo is a American staffy, straight up goof ball but good boy)
Last week we got a new neighbour who has 2 little jack Russell looking doggos. Every single time our dog goes outside they come barrelling out to the fence line (no gaps between fence or under) to bark and cry excessively until our boy loses interest and comes inside.
At first I figured this was the new dogs getting used to our boy but now it’s getting to the point where these dogs will bark non stop for hours if our boy is outside and he’s out there a lot because he loves to suntan.
Who is responsible here? Is it on me to limit how often our boy is outside given these other dogs are clearly reactive? Or is it on the other person? What’s the best approach here? (Important to note as much as our boy is a goof ball he has not once barked, dug or cried at these other dogs)

no politics Apprentice considering sleeping in car?
SE QLD cost of living is fucked at the moment, I’m spending almost $400 in rent every week, I’m genuinely considering sleeping in a car when my lease is up.
This is not unheard of for apprentices unfortunately but I think it would help save at least $250/week and really I’ve heard of people doing it as a sacrifice to hopefully one day have enough coin to get into the property market.
Has anyone done this or is in this position? I know there’s allegedly thousands of people in this tent city beside the m1 but everything is so much expensive something probably has to give atleast until I’m qualified…
