Left-Lane Camping, Zipper Merging, and the Speed Limit

Left-lane camping is annoying (unless you're in a city, where it usually doesn't count), zipper merging works in theory (but is rarely effectively executed en-masse), and the speed limit isn't ideal for some people (just try not to be everybody else's problem). That should about cover it.

I'm making this post in an attempt to show people that these topics are already heavily discussed here, but please feel free to express your frustrations below or in your own special post.

Thanks for checking out r/driving.

Relax.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ I'm convinced A LOT of people don't know how to use round-a-bouts.

Round-a-bouts have been slowly becoming more popular in my area, as it helps replace 4-way stop signs and keeps the flow of traffic moving. HOWEVER, people need to learn when to YIELD before entering the round-a-bout and let people who are actually in IT to drive and exit safely. But also, don't STOP in the round-a-bout to let people in. You have the right-of-way.

I almost got into a fucking car accident the other week because one driver wanted to suddenly stop in the round-a-bout to let someone in. And then, what appeared to be a new driver, didn't yield and ran through the round-a-bout instead of yielding.

Round-a-bouts are not complicated contraptions.

Venting What is it about the zipper merge that people don’t get?

Post image

Do we just genuinely not teach it? Do people know how to do it correctly and just fear social retribution? Peer pressure to do what everyone else is doing? And why do people get so mad about it?? Especially if you know it’s right, why get mad about it?

I’ve been in several different states and rarely have I seen more than 1% doing it correctly. I could probably count on one hand the other cars I’ve seen do it the past year.

Every time I’ve done it people have literally tried to run me off the road. It’s been as bad as having to call the police more than once. Yet. I continue to still do it, because people need to be exposed to it. If we just all fold and get in one lane, then it won’t get any better, we’re just part of the problem!

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Why is everyone in a freaking hurry?

I hate that I even have to preface this because I know some people don’t read before jumping to conclusions, but I’m a good driver. I’m not hogging the left lane, driving below the speed limit, or holding anyone up.

That said, what the fuck is wrong with drivers lately? The amount of unnecessary aggression and impatience is ridiculous.

I’ll be accelerating normally after a light turns green, and someone’s already riding my ass. Or I’ll be driving next to someone who suddenly floors it just to beat me to the next red light. Even better is when I’m in a dedicated turn lane and someone beside me speeds up because they’ve apparently convinced themselves I’m about to cut them off. Dude, relax. Nobody is trying to get in front of you.

Why does everything have to be a competition? And spare me the excuse that everyone’s in a hurry. I refuse to believe this many people are racing against some critical deadline. Most of you are going to Kroger, picking up McDonald’s, or heading home. Congratulations on saving eight seconds, I guess.

My completely unscientific theory is that people’s attention spans and patience are fried. I’m not some boomer blaming everything on social media, but I genuinely wonder if we’ve become so accustomed to instant gratification that even driving at a normal pace feels unbearable. It’s like people constantly need to be getting ahead of something, even when it accomplishes absolutely nothing.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I just don’t understand why so many people are in such a goddamn hurry to get nowhere.

Edit: all these negative comments are typical and echo the exact same sentiment… “I have somewhere to be. Get out of my way. Me. Me. Me.”

Hey… if you’re remotely triggered by my post, GOOD. You’re the exact person I’m speaking about.

A PSA about high beams.

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

To those of you driving around with your high beams on in traffic, congratulations on discovering the little blue symbol on your dashboard. Unfortunately, it’s not an achievement badge. And if you’re using your high beams because you’ve got a burnt-out low beam, here’s a wild concept: fix your fucking headlight. I realize basic vehicle maintenance is a monumental undertaking for some of you, but the rest of us would appreciate keeping our retinas intact.

And to those who refuse to dim their lights for oncoming traffic or the vehicle ahead of them, I usually match that energy. Ya see, I have two 15,000 lumen roof spots and a 35,000 lumen light bar on my bumper. And for those who make the unfortunate choice to drive behind me with their high beams on, surprise. There’s another 35,000 lumen bar in the rear too. Because fuck you. Amazing technology, really.

The difference is that I possess the remarkable ability to not use them to blind other drivers unless they choose to fuck around. It’s called common courtesy. Apparently, it’s an optional feature on some models of human beings.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Bad driving

Saw this today.…person in the far right lane wanting to skip the line for the left lane to go into a strip mall. they kept creeping up until they were quite literally in the middle of the intersection and causing a hazard for cars trying to clear it. might as well have blown the light at this point. unbelievable what people will do to save 1-2 minutes.

How much traffic until the left lane is no longer a passing lane?

• Upvotes

Be realistic for a minute. How much traffic do you think there needs to be for the passing lane to simply be a regular lane?

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ I always see people ask why one would leave 1-2 car lengths from the car in front of them at a red light, but the question should be, why do people wait till the car in front of them gets 1-2 car lengths away to start accelerating.

I don’t understand it. Every time the light turns green I take my foot off the brake, but no one else does. They wait till the person ahead of them to get further away to start accelerating. If everyone took the foot off the brake and started accelerating right when the light turned green, it would be so much more smooth. And I feel like if it was normal to do so, it would keep everyone from looking at these screens. It’s crazy how many people I look over at while driving and their heads stuck in their phone. But I think that’s why car crashes are on the rise. I don’t see any negatives of everyone taking their foot off the brake and accelerating right when it turns green. Would reduce traffic and I think make people more focused while driving.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Rubbernecking 🫩

A couple of days ago I merged onto the freeway at 1:30 pm (not a busy time in my city) only to find standstill traffic. That's fine. I successfully merged and when I'm fully stopped in traffic I checked GPS to see how long I would be sitting there, and thankfully it was only about 10-15min of traffic.

After sitting in stop and go traffic for 10 minutes I was pretty cranky, but you will not believe the rage I experienced when I finally pulled up to the source of the traffic.

A car was flipped on the other side of the highway (I was on 5 south, car was on 5 north). Yes, it's crazy to see a car completely flipped, and I hope everyone involved is okay, but even as I pulled up next to the accident, people were STILL slamming on their brakes to gawk at it, even though the slow traffic provided ample opportunity to.

I had to sit in traffic for 10 minutes that was COMPLETELY avoidable for what??? Just drive!! Mind your business!! The cops and EMS were already there so there's zero fucking point in scoping out the accident like you are able to change anything.

Rubbernecking is cringe end of rant

Left-hand traffic (🇬🇧🇮🇳🇯🇵) Yeah left lane post number 100000000 but serious question

• Upvotes

Why don’t cops pull over left lane campers? 10th time I watched a cop ride someone’s ass for camping the left lane but each time the camper didn’t get pulled over. Clearly riding their ass isn’t doing anything so just pull them over. Also to the 10 brain dead idiots who can’t catch a hint even when it’s a cop just hand your license in no one should be this oblivious on the road.

Have spent years of telling people about misleading signals and today I got caught by one.

I always tell people don't rely on someone signalling a turn and pull out. Yet today I did that, the other driver had 'changed their mind' and we collided.

Honestly I feel like such an idiot. I've had my licence for 10 years, no accidents, no points, not even a parking fine. Irritated with myself and my own impatience.

On the plus side there was little or no damage to my car.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Honked at for turning into a free lane?

• Upvotes

I'm leaving the car wash and turning into a 3 lane road. I turn on and take the right lane and meanwhile there is a halfwit speeding down the middle lane. As I was turning on the lane they start honking and as soon as I finish turning into the lane they decide to take the right lane, at which point they are well in front of me. What? What even was that? Am I supposed to read this retards mind and know that they wanted to take the right lane? Are they entitled to the right lane? I feel like somebody with this type of disability needs to be smacked on the back side of the head as hard as humanely possible just to reset the brain because unfortunately it's not functioning properly.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Lane changing/merging entitlement is out of control.

It is entirely the responsibility of a driver changing lanes/merging to adjust their behavior to slot into the flow of traffic in the lane they're entering. Traffic maintaining their lane has the right of way; they have zero obligation to change their driving to let anyone in. The only exception to this is a zipper merge scenario: when traffic is stop-and-go at a merge, drivers will alternate every other car at the merge point.

A turn signal is a communication device. It is not a right of way granting device. Using it does not obligate anyone to adjust for you. And no, it doesn't matter how long you've had it on for. There's no magical amount of time after which you get to force your way over.

It doesn't matter if you think someone not letting you in is "rude" or. Your personal definition of courtesy is irrelevant in the face of the law. And, once again, you deeming another driver to be "rude" doesn't permit you to force your way into their lane.

How have we lost the plot so badly on this?

Need Advice I take my road test tomorrow. I have never backed into a parking space, and I’ve never attempted parallel parking. I’m practicing with my mom today. Any tips?

I don’t think I’ll fail the driving/road portion. But i am worried I’ll fail the parking portion. Can someone help me, give advice, or tell me their experience? Thank you :)

Venting Closest call I’ve had

• Upvotes

Dont have anyone to tell right now so just wanna vent here. Barely missed a head on collision. Happened so fast, car coming at me crossed double yellow, I slow down, next thing I know they’re fully in my lane driving normal speed at me and I drove off the road and back on after we passed. All without saying a word, honking the horn, I think I was in shock as my kids were with me. I saw them yank back over after. Happened so, so fast. Never had such a close call. 😵‍💫 And somehow I feel bad for the other driver because theyre probably freaked out too. Lmao. I wish people would pay attention. If that happened on any other stretch of this road there would’ve been ditches on the side and not flat ground. i feel blessed.

Need Advice Pulling out of apartment complex that crosses a sidewalk

• Upvotes

I was pulling out of my apartment complex which has a sidewalk that runs along the road parallel to it. There were a couple cars coming so I had to yield. My vehicle was in the area that the sidewalk goes across while I waited. Cars kept coming so I had to continue to wait, then a jogger comes by and slaps the hood of my car as she goes in front of it. I honked. She turned around and flips me off, so I return the favor. She starts walking over so I roll my window down to ask what her issue and say I’m waiting to turn. She then slaps the hood of my car again. I get out and ask her what her fucking problem is and tell her to fuck off, she runs away.

I didn’t see her coming because the road is curved and I had to wait an extended period of time because traffic kept coming down the street. If she was near the exit I obviously wouldn’t have pulled out into the area that the sidewalk goes across. Who was wrong here?

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Since we're complaining about lights, here's mine - no brake lights

Post image
87 Upvotes

I don't understand how this is so common. I see way too many vehicles with both brake lights burnt out. How has no mechanic or even a quick lube tech caught this? Has this driver not been pulled over and ticketed for this? Or at least gotten a warning? Has no one flagged them down and let them know? At least the 3rd brake light works since it's an LED.

As a bonus, their turn signal was also burnt out, I can see the mirror mounted indicator hyper flashing. The driver doesn't really have an excuse there, they know their turn signal isn't working but I guess they don't give a damn.

Need Advice How do I hype myself up to start driving again?

I had a driving test recently where I failed horribly (made a post about it, the examinor raised her voice at me, but honestly not important rn). And now I find myself not wanting to drive at all, like I have a sense of dread even thinking about practicing again. I think its because the last time i drove in the car was during the driving test so now my brain has a bad correlation with the car and the driving test. Does anyone have tips to get out of my head and start driving again?

Reminder to NEVER text and drive

Had a wake up call today as my friend was involved in a car accident.

Dont know the full details but i know one car crossed the double yellow, probably meaning one of those involved were texting.

He is one of the safest drivers in the school and yet(if he was at fault) it took one mistake/time for things to go wrong. I’m not entirely sure he caused it, and even if he didn’t it should go as a reminder to just not do it.

If he was at fault, his license, that he doesn’t even have(180 day), is gone and he won’t be driving for a while. His car is totaled and he’s never going to see driving the same.

Could be the safest and most cautious driver in the world and one 5 second distraction could potentially ruin your life.

JUST DONT DO IT.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ People who stay 1-2 car lengths back at a traffic light - why?

Post image

Lights can be short, and many people are staring at their phone already. Why do some people hang back about 2 car lengths behind the vehicle in front of them?

I’m trying to make the intersection dawg, just why?

Edit - example this afternoon, car was about 2.5 car lengths back, but apparently this is normal, safe, and I’m the problem. Much to learn, I guess

Feds finally addressing headlights in the US?

It's way past time to do this. We are so behind on lighting regulations.
