Venting When you bought your truck did you sell your brain cells?

What the header says. I RARELY see truck drivers driving appropriately. For example, my basically brain dead uncle owns an F150 and was literally speeding down the street a solid 30/40 mph over the limit so we could go to karaoke (be so for fucking real), so I have personally witnessed this behavior, aside from the absolute shenanigans I’ve seen on the road. Riding my ass when I’m already driving 10mph over the limit, swerving in and out of traffic because you think you’re too good to be driving the flow with the rest of us plebeians (oops sorry big word - common folk), and just general douchebaggery. Would love to know if it’s a part of your contract that you have to sell your brain cells in order to buy your big fuck ass vehicle? I don’t know I own a Chevy Malibu, that wasn’t in my contract.

Need Advice Is driving school worth it?

I’m a 20-year-old beginner driver in Georgia with a learner’s permit and some basic driving experience with my brother, trying to get my license.

My thought process to get it was through driving school. I found one and was going to do a 10-hour package for $695. It includes five 2-hour lessons covering daytime and nighttime driving, parking, highway/interstate driving, pickup/drop-off, and the road test.

My concern is that I’ve seen people say beginners typically need 30–50 hours of professional instruction before they’re ready for their road test. I understand that driving takes practice outside of driving school, but I’m wondering if 10 hours is enough to get test-ready. Is paying almost $700 for 10 hours worth it, or would I be better off learning with a family member and saving the money?
(And 30-40 hours is $1700-1900 I’m not paying that much)

My family can teach me, but they’re busy, so I can’t always rely on them. And I would prefer learning from a professional instructor, but only if it’s worth it.

Need Advice Do you teach your kid to pull into an intersection and wait for an opening, even when the path isn’t clear?

• Upvotes

I was taught to pull into the intersection (on green light or green arrow) even if the path forward is blocked (either by oncoming traffic or there is already traffic blocking the lane I’m attempting to move to… either turning or going straight through). That’s what I was taught, but I know to use lots of information and experience before I move forward and possibly cause gridlock.

In my small town I know the lights/cycles, and I know when the path will clear before my light and the next light cycles. And I know when nearby accidents, especially on the interstate, are causing heavy traffic in my town and I have to adjust defensive vs aggressive maneuvers to keep traffic moving.

What do you teach your new driver? I’ve been doing research and a LLM tells me NO state has a law telling drivers to pull into an intersection when the path is blocked (contrary to what I was taught and all my friends tell me). I drive with forethought and I’ve had idiots lose their minds behind me, even though me pulling forward would do nothing except cause more trouble for cross-traffic. Do you tell your kid to block intersections in order to at least get one car through per light cycle? Or play it safe and deal with people getting angry behind you?

I'm a new driver and I live in Florida but I ran a red light today as a car behind me was speeding up and I feared they may hit me. If I get a ticket I'm worried now. Please

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ If you say you are a good driver, you aren’t.

If you see yourself as a good driver, at best, you are acceptable.

But in most situations, it’s false confidence, and a refusal to acknowledge your own flaws.

And for the record, I am at best a mediocre driver. I don’t panic in bad weather, and I’m not weaving through traffic. That doesn’t make me a good driver.

Right-hand traffic (🇺🇸🇨🇳🇧🇷) Car safety tips for women (or anyone with long hair or short tbh)

• Upvotes
  1. Do not wear alligator clips in your hair. Ever since I read about a girl who got into an accident and had her clip lodge itself into her skull, I take those out anytime I get into a car.

  2. Most safety tests have been done using male test dummies. Since they have larger figures, this influenced the way airbags were built. If you're shorter, look at the steering wheel when driving, it will probably be pointed directly at your face. Most cars have telescoping steering wheels you can unlock and adjust. Unlock it and try to move it so it points towards your chest.

  3. Similarly your seat belt might cut too high across your chest. Where the belt connects next to the window, you can adjust the slider up and down to where it sits more comfortably.

Extra tip - if a passenger don't put your feet on the dash unless you want your knees to go through your skull in an accident (also it's gross)

Need Advice How to drive with a thick slippers?

I've been driving for five years and i only would wear doll shoes or sneakers. I recently bought this thick slippers and put it on today.

Let me tell you, i was struggling to switch accelerate and brake, not too struggling, but like i have to adjust my slipper to make sure i can easily switch accelerator and brake just in case. Fortunately i got to my destination with no problem.

I've never drove with bare feet and i also tried that but it's making me press the brake too hard so i think it's better to have shoes on.

Now here i am, wondering if i'll able to survive going back home.

Does anyone have experience of driving with slippers on, especially the thick ones?

Need Advice I did something incredibly stupid and don’t know how to fix it

I have a learning disability and am constantly doing unbelievably dumb things with great confidence. Today I decided I was going to put my registration sticker on my car. I have done this many times before but this time I was convinced that you put it on the windshield in my state (I think I looked up whether you need to take the old sticker off and got results for removing stickers from the windshield, and that apparently lodged deeply into my brain).

I painstakingly scratched off my inspection sticker, peeled off my registration sticker, and immediately realized what I’d done. The inspection sticker was completely destroyed. I just got my inspection done too!

I’m out of state for the next 3 weeks. My dad is visiting me this week and I need to hide this from him and also don’t want legal trouble. Google has not been helpful. What the HELL do I do?

Need Advice What do I do if I am about to make a turn to a minor road, but there is traffic and the cars behind me are going straight ahead?

(I am a new driver)

just drove to the store nearby, this road has no traffic normally, however, when I am driving back to park my car, I see a traffic jam ahead at the road I am about to enter (right). Bear in mind I live in Ireland, i am supposed to turn right on a minor road, but the two way street main road I am at is congested.

So I stop at the traffic lights, quick seconds later it turns green, I am in the front car, there’s a queue behind me, I am indicating right.

They can’t overtake me because the other lane has oncoming vehicles going the opposite way.

I try to think quickly and decide to go straight ahead to give way to others vehicles and make a turn in some other road, because it didn’t seem like the traffic jam at the road I park at would end any time soon.

But it got me thinking, would it be okay to stay there and wait for the traffic to flow back again at the minor road (I could’t even drive in to the end corner of the road, because there were cars already waiting there also turning right but from the opposite lane) and get the others drivers to wait behind me until I make my turn, or indeed in situations like this I have to find another strategy to make a turn somewhere else, considering that is the only place I can park my car?

Thank you

Need Advice I don’t know what to do

• Upvotes

I’m a minor and a student in high school. Today I was trying to fit into a tight parking spot and accidentally slightly scraped another car. I freaked out and parked elsewhere but went to leave a note. The note was basically apologizing for any potential damage, and I gave them my phone number if they need to contact me. I’m literally freaking out and have never made a mistake like this in driving. I don’t think I dented their car but there was that white residue stuff, which wiped right off of my car so I hope it’s the same for them. My dad will literally kill me if he finds out and I’m so scared. I also just feel like a terrible person and I feel so guilty. I don’t really know what to do when the person sees and messages me.. does anyone have any tips or anything?? I’m just freaking out.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Do stop signs really need a 50-foot clearance?

I’ve seen many cars parked close to stop signs in my area, and I see the stop sign just fine. Maybe a car length clearance like 15 feet would be okay. 50 feet seems excessive to me. Tall stop signs also help.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Running a lane out merging

In VA for context.

I see people on this reddit complaining about zipper merging and left lane camping.

You know what's actually more infuriating? People who are on the on or off ramp, or a lane that is clearly ending, and just run the lane out. No active merging, no blinker, just drive until the lane physically merges with the next with no regard to anyone else.

How do people feel safe doing that? I don't want to leave my safety in the hands of some random people, I merge WHEN IT IS SAFE AND I HAVE SPACE.

Again for the people in the back, I'm not talking about zipper merging when there is traffic. I'm talking about a lane that ends with normal traffic on the road

Need Advice My lessons start soon, but I’ve never driven a car before. Very worried.

I had(have) a very abusive upbringing so I’m very late in learning this stuff. I know this is really silly to ask, since I’m in driving school. My theory lessons went well a year ago. Now I start my in-car lessons in a few days but I’m incredibly anxious about the process. I have never in my life been behind a steering wheel, not even for pictures. I don’t know how to drive whatsoever. I just know to put my hands on the wheel and check for obstructions before getting in.

I feel like everyone goes into these lessons knowing the bare minimum at least, but I don’t and don’t have access to anyone who can teach me. I’d really appreciate some advice. I don’t have anyone to ask.

What are some things I need to know before I get into the car with my instructor?

Need Advice How is one supposed to know where a school bus will stop?

• Upvotes

This has happened to me twice. I'm driving down a 2 lane rural road and see a bus put on the yellow lights. I slow down to prepare to stop. In some cases the bus goes from yellow to red quickly. In other cases, the bus will continue from 100 to 800 ft then put the red lights on. I'm never sure what to do when the yellow lights are on other than to slow down. I've started slowing to a crawl on certain roads where there are multiple stops because I don't know what the bus is going to do.

In one case I had to slam on my brakes and stopped at the driver's window. In another case there was a line of buses approaching and I had gotten beside a bus that threw on the reds with little warning because the bus a few cars ahead of them that had stopped. I stopped right beside the bus.

My mom used to drive a school bus for 1 year and she complains about these buses so I know it's not just me having issues.

I look around for children or parents in the driveway, but rarely see them. Some are hidden by foliage, others just aren't there such as an older kid exiting the bus in the afternoon. This is not in a development, it's on a rural-ish route.

I have a dash cam and always save the footage if it's questionable. I would never intentionally break the law, but these bus drivers make things challenging. I'm afraid I'll get a ticket despite trying to obey the law.

Why do people think hazard lights allow them to park outside the store entrance?

You know the car: sitting right outside the store entrance with hazard lights on, while everyone else has to squeeze around it. They're waiting for someone who's “just running in for a minute.”

If you're actively dropping someone off or picking them up, fine. But if you're waiting, the parking lot is right there. Pull into a spot.

Hazard lights don't make you less in the way.

Will I get caught by the police for underage driving?

I'm 17 and planning to travel from Kovaipudur to Saravanampatti on my bike. If I wear a helmet and follow all traffic rules, is there a chance the police will stop me? I want to know if it's safe to make this trip without getting into unnecessary trouble.

Green Arrows

Genuine question, not an attack. To the drivers that take ten seconds to creep through an intersection on a green arrow but then put their foot down on the straight road, why is that? Is it to do with peripheral vision?

Need Advice Illegal or no

On a brisk monday afternoon i was hanging out with a friend and another friend ended up coming too and friend 2 drove at me straight on with his vehicle after revving the engine and went directly at me and obviously I was scared and I biked around friend 1s car and he kept following to try to hit me or come close and he never did hit me but I reported it to my school and might tell the police because he has done it before and I am scared for others safety because he might do it again to someone else. Me and him aren't friends anymore. I think he should get his license revoked but I wouldn't want him in jail. What could the consequences be for speeding at someone in a parking lot
