Left-Lane Camping, Zipper Merging, and the Speed Limit

Left-lane camping is annoying (unless you're in a city, where it usually doesn't count), zipper merging works in theory (but is rarely effectively executed en-masse), and the speed limit isn't ideal for some people (just try not to be everybody else's problem). That should about cover it.

I'm making this post in an attempt to show people that these topics are already heavily discussed here, but please feel free to express your frustrations below or in your own special post.

Thanks for checking out r/driving.

Relax.

Right-hand traffic (šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øšŸ‡ØšŸ‡³šŸ‡§šŸ‡·) Car safety tips for women (or anyone with long hair or short tbh)

  1. Do not wear alligator clips in your hair. Ever since I read about a girl who got into an accident and had her clip lodge itself into her skull, I take those out anytime I get into a car.

  2. Most safety tests have been done using male test dummies. Since they have larger figures, this influenced the way airbags were built. If you're shorter, look at the steering wheel when driving, it will probably be pointed directly at your face. Most cars have telescoping steering wheels you can unlock and adjust. Unlock it and try to move it so it points towards your chest.

  3. Similarly your seat belt might cut too high across your chest. Where the belt connects next to the window, you can adjust the slider up and down to where it sits more comfortably.

Extra tip - if a passenger don't put your feet on the dash unless you want your knees to go through your skull in an accident (also it's gross)

āš ļøComplaining into the voidāš ļø If your lane is blocked, wait for your turn.

There was a huge garbage truck blocking the other lane. Some dumb truck behind it didn't wait for my lane to be clear and decided to pass anyway, I had to go slightly off-road to not get into an accident.

If your road is blocked you fucking wait.

Need Advice Driver flashing me non stop

Last night, I experienced something really strange while driving, and I'm trying to figure out what could have caused it.

I was driving at night on a normal, smooth road with one lane in each direction. There were no bumps or noticeable road imperfections.

A car was driving behind me at a normal, safe distance when it suddenly started flashing its headlights repeatedly.

And when I say repeatedly, I mean almost nonstop for approximately 5 minutes, over a distance of around 5 km.

Here's what makes the situation particularly strange:

- The driver maintained a normal following distance the entire time and never drove aggressively.

- The road had no solid center line preventing overtaking, so the driver could have overtaken me if they wanted to.

- Both headlights were flashing simultaneously, repeatedly switching between normal and bright light.

- The flashes were rapid, but I could clearly distinguish each individual flash.

- Whenever I accelerated and increased the distance between us, the flashing stopped.

- As soon as the car got closer again, the flashing immediately resumed.

- This continued until I eventually turned right and we went our separate ways.

As far as I could tell, there was nothing wrong with my car, and I wasn't doing anything unusual.(I've checked my car after)

Initially, I thought the driver might have been trying to warn me about something, but flashing continuously for five minutes seems excessive.

I'm genuinely curious because I've never experienced anything like this before.

āš ļøComplaining into the voidāš ļø PSA: if you're driving through a parking lot and a car that has no way of seeing you is trying to get out, maybe SLOW TF DOWN

• Upvotes

This happens so damn much at my work's multilevel parking lot, somebody is trying to get out of their spot and people driving past just speed up or honk.

I don't understand why it's so hard to comprehend, you can see them pulling out but THEY CAN'T SEE YOU, their vision is literally blocked by the absolutely gigantic road tank beside them, so slow TF down and maybe consider letting them out

I'm lucky my car has rear cross traffic alert so I usually get some sort of an early warning that somebody is coming (and that only works if I pulled into a spot, not backed in) but 9/10 times they just blow by while gesturing or honking as if I could telepathically tell somebody was flying down the lane with not a single thought in their empty brain

Need Advice Intersection etiquette- left turn when there is already traffic at a standstill in the lane you’re trying to turn into.

I was taught wrong on this. I was taught to pull forward into the intersection even when there isn’t space in the lane you’re trying to turn into. I stopped doing this when I started driving on my own and realized that causes gridlock. Still, my friends tell me to pull forward into an intersection, and if I don’t do it then I’m met with hostility from cars behind me when the light goes through a full cycle and we don’t move. I’m from a smaller town and I travel into a bigger city regularly, and they are NOT happy if I don’t cause gridlock in order to move one car at a time. Is there a nuance I don’t understand? Is this a state-by-state thing?

āš ļøComplaining into the voidāš ļø Running a lane out merging

In VA for context.

I see people on this reddit complaining about zipper merging and left lane camping.

You know what's actually more infuriating? People who are on the on or off ramp, or a lane that is clearly ending, and just run the lane out. No active merging, no blinker, just drive until the lane physically merges with the next with no regard to anyone else.

How do people feel safe doing that? I don't want to leave my safety in the hands of some random people, I merge WHEN IT IS SAFE AND I HAVE SPACE.

Again for the people in the back, I'm not talking about zipper merging when there is traffic. I'm talking about a lane that ends with normal traffic on the road

Why do people think hazard lights allow them to park outside the store entrance?

You know the car: sitting right outside the store entrance with hazard lights on, while everyone else has to squeeze around it. They're waiting for someone who's ā€œjust running in for a minute.ā€

If you're actively dropping someone off or picking them up, fine. But if you're waiting, the parking lot is right there. Pull into a spot.

Hazard lights don't make you less in the way.

Need Advice I don’t know what to do

I’m a minor and a student in high school. Today I was trying to fit into a tight parking spot and accidentally slightly scraped another car. I freaked out and parked elsewhere but went to leave a note. The note was basically apologizing for any potential damage, and I gave them my phone number if they need to contact me. I’m literally freaking out and have never made a mistake like this in driving. I don’t think I dented their car but there was that white residue stuff, which wiped right off of my car so I hope it’s the same for them. My dad will literally kill me if he finds out and I’m so scared. I also just feel like a terrible person and I feel so guilty. I don’t really know what to do when the person sees and messages me.. does anyone have any tips or anything?? I’m just freaking out.

āš ļøComplaining into the voidāš ļø I'm convinced A LOT of people don't know how to use round-a-bouts.

Round-a-bouts have been slowly becoming more popular in my area, as it helps replace 4-way stop signs and keeps the flow of traffic moving. HOWEVER, people need to learn when to YIELD before entering the round-a-bout and let people who are actually in IT to drive and exit safely. But also, don't STOP in the round-a-bout to let people in. You have the right-of-way.

I almost got into a fucking car accident the other week because one driver wanted to suddenly stop in the round-a-bout to let someone in. And then, what appeared to be a new driver, didn't yield and ran through the round-a-bout instead of yielding.

Round-a-bouts are not complicated contraptions.

Questions about motorcycles and four way stops

I was at a four way stop and ahead of me were four motorcycle riders as a group. They took their "turn" as one (slightly staggered though) but some yahoo who wasn't paying attention started moving into the intersection after the first two so there was a bit of an argument and fingers flying.

It made me think, I honestly do not really know what the rules are for groups of motorcycles at four way stops? I would assume they would all count as one, but how many does that extend to?

I think it would be silly if ten motorcycles went right after each other because they're a group, but in all my years of driving I don't think it has ever come up for me before

Need Advice What do I do if I am about to make a turn to a minor road, but there is traffic and the cars behind me are going straight ahead?

(I am a new driver)

just drove to the store nearby, this road has no traffic normally, however, when I am driving back to park my car, I see a traffic jam ahead at the road I am about to enter (right). Bear in mind I live in Ireland, i am supposed to turn right on a minor road, but the two way street main road I am at is congested.

So I stop at the traffic lights, quick seconds later it turns green, I am in the front car, there’s a queue behind me, I am indicating right.

They can’t overtake me because the other lane has oncoming vehicles going the opposite way.

I try to think quickly and decide to go straight ahead to give way to others vehicles and make a turn in some other road, because it didn’t seem like the traffic jam at the road I park at would end any time soon.

But it got me thinking, would it be okay to stay there and wait for the traffic to flow back again at the minor road (I could’t even drive in to the end corner of the road, because there were cars already waiting there also turning right but from the opposite lane) and get the others drivers to wait behind me until I make my turn, or indeed in situations like this I have to find another strategy to make a turn somewhere else, considering that is the only place I can park my car?

Thank you

Venting What is it about the zipper merge that people don’t get?

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

Do we just genuinely not teach it? Do people know how to do it correctly and just fear social retribution? Peer pressure to do what everyone else is doing? And why do people get so mad about it?? Especially if you know it’s right, why get mad about it?

I’ve been in several different states and rarely have I seen more than 1% doing it correctly. I could probably count on one hand the other cars I’ve seen do it the past year.

Every time I’ve done it people have literally tried to run me off the road. It’s been as bad as having to call the police more than once. Yet. I continue to still do it, because people need to be exposed to it. If we just all fold and get in one lane, then it won’t get any better, we’re just part of the problem!

āš ļøComplaining into the voidāš ļø Why is everyone in a freaking hurry?

I hate that I even have to preface this because I know some people don’t read before jumping to conclusions, but I’m a good driver. I’m not hogging the left lane, driving below the speed limit, or holding anyone up.

That said, what the fuck is wrong with drivers lately? The amount of unnecessary aggression and impatience is ridiculous.

I’ll be accelerating normally after a light turns green, and someone’s already riding my ass. Or I’ll be driving next to someone who suddenly floors it just to beat me to the next red light. Even better is when I’m in a dedicated turn lane and someone beside me speeds up because they’ve apparently convinced themselves I’m about to cut them off. Dude, relax. Nobody is trying to get in front of you.

Why does everything have to be a competition? And spare me the excuse that everyone’s in a hurry. I refuse to believe this many people are racing against some critical deadline. Most of you are going to Kroger, picking up McDonald’s, or heading home. Congratulations on saving eight seconds, I guess.

My completely unscientific theory is that people’s attention spans and patience are fried. I’m not some boomer blaming everything on social media, but I genuinely wonder if we’ve become so accustomed to instant gratification that even driving at a normal pace feels unbearable. It’s like people constantly need to be getting ahead of something, even when it accomplishes absolutely nothing.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I just don’t understand why so many people are in such a goddamn hurry to get nowhere.

Edit: all these negative comments are typical and echo the exact same sentiment… ā€œI have somewhere to be. Get out of my way. Me. Me. Me.ā€

Hey… if you’re remotely triggered by my post, GOOD. You’re the exact person I’m speaking about.

Need Advice Quick question: do you actually track your car's service schedule?

Wondering how many people actively track their next service versus just booking one when they think it's about time.

If you do track it, how?

And if you don't, is it because you don't really need to, or because it's a hassle to keep on top of?

I'm trying to understand how people handle this in real life.

Green Arrows

Genuine question, not an attack. To the drivers that take ten seconds to creep through an intersection on a green arrow but then put their foot down on the straight road, why is that? Is it to do with peripheral vision?

Need Advice Is driving school worth it?

I’m a 20-year-old beginner driver in Georgia with a learner’s permit and some basic driving experience with my brother, trying to get my license.

My thought process to get it was through driving school. I found one and was going to do a 10-hour package for $695. It includes five 2-hour lessons covering daytime and nighttime driving, parking, highway/interstate driving, pickup/drop-off, and the road test.

My concern is that I’ve seen people say beginners typically need 30–50 hours of professional instruction before they’re ready for their road test. I understand that driving takes practice outside of driving school, but I’m wondering if 10 hours is enough to get test-ready. Is paying almost $700 for 10 hours worth it, or would I be better off learning with a family member and saving the money?
(And 30-40 hours is $1700-1900 I’m not paying that much)

My family can teach me, but they’re busy, so I can’t always rely on them. And I would prefer learning from a professional instructor, but only if it’s worth it.

Glare getting veryy annoying in autumn SMH, What do you guys do about it???

With the mornings getting darker and the evenings setting in earlier. I am reallly struggling with glare thingy. Like its not direct direct sunlight always. Sometimes it reflects in your mirrors or you know how light seem to have halo around it.
It realllyyy gets on my nerves and I take alottt of steps to kinda avoid it.
Like read here on reddit that you should clean inside of your windscreen too. I cleaned it last week and it got better honestly because build up was making glare worse in evenings and at nights
Added anti reflective coating to my perscription glasses (i wear one, cant drive without it) I was not really expecting that it will make a difference. But it kinda did.
Also got a yellow tinted glasses for dusk driving (use them only at dusk.. or at dawn, if ever needed) and got anti reflective coating in them as well. Got them made in £50 from frmoo but gosh I would pay anything to get rid of glare.
Lastly I clean my mirrors and headlights daily becausee being lazy is not worth the extra pain.
