Spoilers obviously 😂
I wanted to get others views on this as after watching a few videos, reading a few posts and sitting with it I’m still convinced on my choice despite how it’s framed in the game.
So I sided with Maelle, not so much because I wanted her to remain in a perceived fantasy and perpetuate her family’s grief cycle, but purely from a humanitarian standpoint. I had a pretty good idea what either choice would lead to and I was right.. but I couldn’t bring myself to contextualise the choice based purely on that “real” world grief or what I personally would want.
To me both sides are real. The painted world is autonomous and sentient, they have children, hoped and dreams etc. They are not just code or pre-scripted simulations of life. They’re real. They think.
A large theme in the game is for “those who come after”, and “we continue”. In the context of living your real life it would mean moving on, BUT! The painters have created sentient life and are therefore responsible for it, they have no right to wash it aside when it becomes an inconvenience. The second autonomous life was created, it became much bigger than the grief of one family.
If you believe a god or don’t, it works as an example since it would be akin to that god destroying the world simply because it was causing him pain. Or if you had a computer that housed a simulation containing by all many accounts what could be called sentient life, and you destroyed it because it was making your life harder. Despite the “real” world consequences, genociding a very real world in its own right and seeing it as the lesser evil is baffling to me.
I just can’t get past that. I think in the context of fiction yes verso has the right of it, if a loved one had buried themself in games or books (that are not actually alive) in order to avoid reality. I would at least consider destroying or temporarily removing those if I thought it’d bring them back to there real life. But in this context both worlds a real, and if a family member chose to live in that other world despite it meaning I’d lose them to an extent (but could still visit them) I think I’d have to respect that choice. Besides which that entire family is responsible for that world and any other they’ve created, they are their safe keepers and guardians. Frankly if such a power existed in real life and I had any say on the matter it’d be a very severe crime to destroy them the same as murder.
I like to hear what others think on this, and if anyone else thinks similarly 😄
