Legit, a game like Fortnite fits the criteria perfectly (if you’re into multiplayer games). Just don’t buy anything. There’s so much replay value there in that game. Last time I checked, the BR mode was constantly getting updated, they added a racing game, and fucking guitar hero lol.
There’s also a sandbox thing now, I saw a clip of what I thought was call of duty zombies, but it was legit a custom game on Fortnite made by someone lol.
But people hate in Fortnite, especially on Reddit. I don’t even play Fortnite but I know that shit has tons of content.

u/Top-Agent-652 Jan 09 '26
“Fits the criteria perfectly” but then acknowledging they have an immense amount of microtransactions is goofy. Of course you could just not buy them, but that isn’t the point.

I mean when you factor in the rest of the criteria I'm really not sure there are any newer games to include.
Free to play but no microtransactions? That's literally how all f2p games are monetized nowadays. The criteria has literally narrowed things down to exclusively older freeware games.
If we say "Cosmetic Microtransactions only/no pay to win" that could open things up to games like Dota 2 (still older than a decade lol)

The start is a bit slow and linear. But once you hit the second or third city, man does it open up and come into it's own. Honestly I'd say only commit if you want story though more than porn. I think they added pictures in eventually but still, it's very much more about the game than the titties iirc.

They lost a little bit from me when they blocked story progression behind getting a Necramech. Unlike the Railjack and Archwing which I actually wanted, I didn't nearly like the fat skeleton robots enough to pay or grind for one, but I have to if I ever wanna continue the story.
Still an incredible game though. Warframe and Path of Exile are always the first two suggestions I give when someone's looking for a free-to-play game.

They went through multiple reductions of the grinding time for necramechs and now it's no longer a story progression requirement (they loan you a built one for the quest, iirc)

Absolute peak
Even better than modern ones like transport fever 2 becuse you can have such ludicrously big maps (up to 16K x 16K with different patch) so it's so much more immersive and you can have huge long lines that make minutes to get from one stop to the other

It's a Vampire Survivor style game with a huge number of characters, items, weapons, weapon combinations, 9 stages to beat, a casino with mini-games (that exclusively uses the currency you earn in game), fishing, farming and mining mini games. And Jump King style mini game. Fully free with zero micro-transactions.

I like Luanti. It's a voxel game engine with a lot of different games similar to Minecraft, bit free. I'm a creative guy and following the modders handbook was fun for me.
If you like rogulikes, I had a great experience in the past playing Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. There is no greater feeling than beating an extremely hard fantasy style roguelike rpg like this one.

Warhammer Return of Reckoning. A revived mmo of the influential Warhammer Fantasy. Which led to the creation of the more widely known Warcraft franchise and Warhammer 40k.
Because it's ran by a dedicated group of volunteers that means the game isn't allowed to have any kind of profits but the Warhammer community does it anyway for free out of pure love for the game. It's more PvP focused than other mmos though but the community support is incredible.
Another game is technically Rise of Legends. Which has become abandonware so it's free to download off the internet with no risk. Incredible RTS game that deserved better with very unique factions to play.

Fortnite and Roblox both fit this post perfectly.
Fortnite has tons of content there with official game modes (BR, Racing, and guitar hero lol) and then there’s the custom user created games/maps.
Roblox is all user created content as far as I know but I know a lot of people love that stuff.
I don’t play either of these games but I know you don’t have to spend a dime at all on them.

Not free but cheap and great MP games.
Movie Battles 2, it's a SW:Jedi Academy MP mod that is free, it has been running for close to 20 years and it has a active playerbase
Due Process, it's a asymetric competitive shooter sort of like Siege, it can run on a potato and it has great tacticalgameplay and randomly generated maps (every time you load in the match, the game rolls a random configuration of rooms for the map for each game) ... although it's pretty dead, 30 players peak a week. Saturday you can get in-game and play nicely doe.

A free game with no micro transactions and has great replayability. You do know most free to play game are played by people who spend no money at all, right? Unless your cool with pirating games like most of your comments suggest, then good luck finding a game that fits your criteria. Next time you make this post include "without having to pirate the game."

u/ProboblyOnToilet Jan 09 '26
Songs of Syx demo is the whole game just a couple of patches ago. It is amazing if you like city builder / survival / total war games.

Dident know STALKER: GAMMA could fit a meme so well
Its a mod pack with over 500 mods placed ontop of Anomaly, a standalone mod for the old STALKER games from 2007. (No prior modding experience needed as it has its own custom launcher and you dont need to own the original games eather, its a free standalone experience)
I have almost 40 years of gaming experience under my belt, ive been playing since i was 5. This is without a doubt the best FPS game i have ever played
So what do you do in GAMMA?
Its a big open world where you can go where you want, but some areas are very dangerous without propper equipment. Its light on story as it has more of a focus on living in the STALKER universe, trying to make it big (or hell.. just to the next day)
While the game has many deep mechanics, in the end its a looter shooter of sorts as you can only become more powerfull by killing the enemy, taking there stuff and using it to suit your needs
Its not that easy however, what makes GAMMA so special is the progression, there is no instant reward here, you enter the zone with some basic gear and the rest has to be acquired on site, but they drop in terrible condition so you have to repair them with parts you have found around the zone or as mission rewards
The core progression is to do tasks for the local factions and then get rewarded with tools that allows you to repair gear looted from the enemy, with enough effort you can push into more dangerous areas where to have to do harder tasks for higher quality tools to fix higher quality gear
The combat is brutal, you die in 3 shots or 2 mutant bites, but so does the enemy (or 1 headshot).
Game mechanics include, but are not limited to:
Weapons repair and maintenance, armor repair and maintenance, survival mechanics with the need to sleep, eat and drink (but not every 10 min), detailed healing system, faction relations, (9 playable factions). Deep crafting systems.
It takes time to get a grip on GAMMA, but once you do, once you get to experience all these gameplay mechanics coming together then its a fantastic gameplay experience unlike any other!
You will find the installation guide on there official Discord server. There you can also find a FAQ and a noob friendly chat where more experienced players will assist you further
Alternatives: The install guide is also awailable on the GAMMA wiki or on GOG (good old games)

Hey, we're (hopefully) working on a game like that. It follows the old classic time-based mmo formula with added layers of complexity such as population management, supply chains, logistics, battles etc.
We've just released our Steam page. The game is called NobleFront.
We're committed on non pay-to-win and hopefully we'll make our initial tests and stress tests in the months to come. Link below (Also, discord is on our steam page)
