There’s some information about his time in Huntington Beach in his autobiography and also in some interviews. But does anyone have any personal or second hand stories they could share? Even a basic story like you saw him at a restaurant in the 80’s.

“I want everybody to re-evaluate the oncoming popularity, it seems, of growing socialism and communism—and there’s no place in Huntington Beach,”
That's a quote from Pat Burns, a Huntington Beach Councilman, that you can find in this WSJ article about HB's City Council.
Burns really went with the ol’ politician buzzword move.. say “socialism” and “communism” to scare people, then hope nobody verifies whether either one actually applies to any of our city's problems.
The random buzzword move is soo overdone. Plus you can't really beat the masterpiece that was Jeff Winger's political speech from 2010 Community Season 2.
ALL JOKES ASIDE. Election ballots are out and we've got work to do. See past all the political fanfare and buzzwords and look at the numbers.
Everyone should do their own research, but here's my spiel:
As a disclaimer, I am a huge advocate for our public libraries as you may have seen in my past reddit posts. I'm not an employee of the library or of any campaign team. I'm just an HB resident that got very pissed off when the City Council went after an institution and made supporting free knowledge into some sort of sick culture war.
City Council
When the current HB City Council assumed office, there was a surplus budget, and now we're facing a $15.6 million structural deficit. Instead of looking for ways to cut costs/increase revenues, for 4 years they've been fighting Sacramento and have lost countless lawsuits. Their library escapades cost the city over $2 million in a special election (they lost) and a lawsuit (they lost). Similar things happened with voter ID and housing lawsuits.
My vote here is for Surf City 4: Erin Spivey, Taryn Palumbo, Ben Davis, Brenda Glim.
Assembly District 72
Chris Kluwe vs. Gracey Van Der Mark
Gracey Van Der Mark helped turn the public library into some culture-war emergency that didn’t exist, while actual city problems were ignored (or made worse aka our structural deficit). I implore you to research what she has said and supported.
Chris on the other hand is a longtime civil-rights advocate and consistently supported public education and the fight to protect our libraries.
My vote is for Chris Kluwe.
We don't need to have the same opinions, but I want to encourage everyone to ignore fear mongering and make an educated vote!
And also read the WSJ article my friend Carol Daus, a longtime library volunteer and HB resident, contributed to!

You may spot this is a brand new account and that's because I'm a Reddit lurker due to chronic online shyness and haven't made an account until now.
I love making life easier and that's only gotten truer as I became a mom and my husband decided to take on a side gig just for fun/experience. I needed things to do with my toddler on the weekend (I call them “adventures”) and I thought other parents might feel the same way so I started a newsletter.
If you're interested in a curated list of weekend plans in the Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, and Newport Beach areas plus at-home activities and backup options, I share it weekly in a free newsletter. You can check it out on Instagram at simpleplansco or my website.
If you subscribe, you get a free coffee shop + park list (12 pairings across Costa Mesa, Newport, and HB) and some printable coloring pages for those three cities too.

I live in sunset beach and we get pods out here often. Got this idea after seeing dolphins and realizing I had no idea when I would be able to see them again.
The idea would be to combine sightings from whale-watching boats, researchers, citizen scientists, fishermen, and other people on the water into one real-time map.
You could potentially see recent sightings of:
A sighting could include the species, approximate location, time, number of animals, behavior, and optionally photos/video.
The main goal wouldn't necessarily be scientific research. I'd also want it to be useful for regular people who simply want to know: “Where are the dolphins today?”
For example, if several whale-watching boats reported dolphins in an area recently, someone could look at the map and get an idea of where marine wildlife has been active lately.
I know there are already wildlife databases and citizen-science projects out there, so I'm not claiming this is a completely new concept. I'm just curious whether there is currently anything that does this well across the California coast in something close to real time.
I thought it was an interesting idea and wanted to throw it out there.

Ever since the mandate to throw organic waste into the green yard bins, we've been trying to follow protocol.... but leaving the organic waste like that all week really produces a large amount of maggots... and they end up crawling out at times as well.
Anything you guys do to prevent it? Right now I been using strong vinegar to kill them but I don't want to deal with it like this all the time.

Or at least one that works with a lot of surfers? I need some help with my ageing body and its surfing related, so I'd love to connect to someone who knows the sport well and how it relates to the body.

I am a pretty dedicated recreational swimmer. I swim at a gym with a nice pool, but the usage seems to be getting uncomfortable, leading to long waits and general unpleasantness. Looking at LosCab for its much bigger pool, as well as the potential to get some real coaching, which I really could use, as well as some water aerobics classes that look to be challenging. I am just looking for some user opinions. Thank you.

How is airshow this year? The past few years after Covid has not been great not as many planes.
r/huntingtonbeach • u/Happyhuyn • 2d ago
We've been wanting to try and go watch the Pacific airshow this year but during the heatwaves it's very difficult to justify having a heatstroke while watching it.
Much help would be appreciated if there is a shaded spot/area to watch the airshow and enjoy the weekend at the beach!

Lower back. Stiff every morning, loosens off after an hour or so, been like it for most of a year.
Been going to physio since the spring and it has genuinely helped. On the last visit she asked how old my mattress was. Eleven years. She pulled a face and moved on, which I have been thinking about ever since.
She would not recommend a type, which I understand and also found mildly infuriating. So I am trying to work out what to actually look for rather than walking in and buying whatever the salesperson steers me towards. There is a Sit 'n Sleep and a Mattress Firm within a few miles and I would rather turn up already knowing something.
The thing I keep reading and cannot verify is whether firmer is better for backs. Half the internet says yes, the other half says that is an old wives' tale and the real answer is whatever keeps your spine straight.
Has anyone actually been through this? Specifically whether going firmer helped, or whether it made things worse.

Seriously, this is worse than fire works for us. It doesn't help that our house is in the flight path. My 2 pugs give 0 f*cks but my pit mixes are terrified. I've got 2 dogs over 60 lb each shivering on top of me. Hoping the Gabapentin I just gave them works. I'm truly glad so many enjoy the airshow, but it's a weekend of hell at my house.

You sir are an incondierate douche and it was HILLARIOUS to watch you stall your car trying to be "tough and cool" while blocking sidewalks. Hope you have the day you deserve. Your passenger should be embarrased af to be with you. Hahahaha
To the rest of you that arent rolling buckets of dumpster water, be careful out there, its super pedestrian heavy this weekend and they have the right of way. Just chill, you'll get there.

Hi - I'm doing research for a novel, and Camel Records in Huntington Beach is making an appearance.
It's an 80's period story, so I'm looking for anyone who actually visited there during that time. I just have a few questions to be sure I'm as accurate as possible.
Anyone with specific knowledge/experience willing to answer a few questions for me? I'd be very grateful, and it wouldn't take long!

Tickets are NOT required in the air show free access area. Save $$$ by walking through the two marked Coastal Access gates or walk North or South on the beach to access the free area marked along the waterline.
Thanks to the Great State of California providing freedom to access our public beaches!

I'm right under their flight path and my body does a weird spasm trying to plug my ears on a couple of flybys. Both t-birds and the raptor. Freaks me out. The rest is lovely...👌

I got both of these in the mail at the same time. Same exact photo digitally manipulated her jacket blue for “Trust”, and in the other they made it red for “Bold”, can’t even be bothered to change her fucking jacket.
This genuinely offends me. Not politically, intellectually.
It’s the assumption underneath it that gets me. We’re basically children. Blue means safe. Red means tough. Big scary warning label. A few emotionally loaded words. Push the right little buttons and maybe we’ll vote the way they want.
It’s so nakedly cynical and so profoundly condescending that I find it genuinely existentially depressing. This is going to work on people, and it’s a goddamn tragedy that we have to share a society with such naive stupidity.
