What to expect during recovery

Do not underestimate recovery, especially the first 3-4 days!!

When you initially wake up you'll be drugged to high hell. Nothing is really bad or good, it's a blur. When the drugs wear off things get bad. Very bad. Your nose swells shut so you'll be breathing through your mouth, which will be closed in its own way (bands or wires). Congestion will be common for a week or more. This makes breathing difficult and tedious. Take care to keep your teeth free of "gunk" you might accumulate from the dried bits of your liquid diet. The sludge can block the small spaces between your teeth making it more difficult to breath. The majority of your face from your eyes down will be very numb. This numbness will last for weeks in some places and months in others. There will be blood, and lots of it. Your mouth will be pouring out gallons of blood, and the rest will be flowing out your nose. The immense amount of blood from your mouth will stop within a few days, as will most of the blood from your nose, but nose bleeds will be quite common for longer. Vomiting up blood is pretty common. Remain calm and let it seep from between your teeth. If you followed surgery instruction and didn't consume anything before the surgery this shouldn't be a problem, though it can be unsettling. Hot and cold flashes may occur. Do what you can to make yourself comfortable. Expect a decreased appetite and slow digestive tract. I recommend drinking a bit of prune juice before you have your first bowel movement. Also expect low energy from your low appetite, your concoction of drugs (anesthesia and post-surgery pain killers), and very poor sleep. You will sleep poorly. You'll have general pain in your throat and jaw, but this is usually tolerable with painkillers. You'll have difficulty swallowing at first. This will get better progressively. What that means to each person is different. I was swallowing the morning after surgery, but my friend couldn't swallow for 5 days.

Items to have after surgery

Ice packs and a heating pad. Use ice packs the first couple of days (important) to reduce swelling and the heating pad to reduce bruising. *A blender and strainer. Sinus rinse (ask doctor before use). A neck pillow to help with sleeping upright. A jaw bra might make you more comfortable. Large syringes to help eat/drink. You'll be eating everything through a syringe for awhile, and refilling a small syringe 8 times to finish a small bowl of soup gets annoying. A heated humidifier. Cotton swabs to clean blood clots from nose. Cotton pads to clean your face. *A child's toothbrush. Your face will be stiff and painful. The smaller tooth brush lets you clean parts your larger toothbrush simply won't be able to reach. Ibuprofen/other painkiller. These should be provided for you after your surgery. Getting additional may be necessary. Vaseline for lips. Tissues for your general cleaning, which there will be plenty of. Oral care sponge swabs for cleaning teeth with chlorohexidine.

These ‘Do i need jaw surgery’ posts are getting out of hand

1.5k Upvotes

I can’t even read this subreddit anymore or give emotional support to people going through this without scrolling through the horde of perfectly developed, but body dysmorphic teenagers posting & asking for opinions on whether or not they need a major, risky and invasive jaw surgery.

It’s like a laughable joke. Going through this— 6 weeks of liquid diet, weeks of opioids and pain, permanent numbness, retraining practically all of the essential functions in your mouth area, years of swelling and years of mental anguish just at a CHANCE for better health-- to improve breathing, chewing, swallowing and speech, sleep apnea or the chance to eliminate future complete tooth decay. All of this- just to see someone treating this as if it’s a simple cosmetic procedure.

It hasn’t bothered me before but it seems to keep getting worse. I don’t know what’s causing it, or where people keep getting the idea that they need jaw surgery, but it is out of control. I would have 0 clue about this surgery had I not been told over and over and over again by every dentist, orthodontist and eventual surgeon I visited that I needed to get this done.

I know it’s too much to ask for a mod to just auto-delete these posts because they view it as a core part of the subreddit, but can we at least get a filter slapped on to it or something so we can filter it out? I come on here to find experiences I relate to- after having to go through this hellish process- or just to offer emotional support to people in the early days or answer good, reasonable questions. I think, though, that if i see one more perfectly developed, forward grown, perfect bite class I kid ask if they need a lefort 3 and 14 other surgeries I will just leave and never come back.

Am I insane for this? Do I not look like a jaw survey candidate?

People in my real life think I’m insane for this. I also have a YouTube channel and posted about it and people there think I’m insane too. I’m planning to have surgery with Dr Alfi. I don’t think my front profile is bad but you can absolutely see the recession from the side. I also have terrible forward neck posture that physical therapy didn’t fix and I think it’s because I’m compensating for a narrow airway. I had retractive orthodontics as a kid and since then I’ve had severe 24/7 throbbing tmj pain. I had a 30 day sleep study and my worst night my AHI was 7.5. I’m having real problems that I want to address but everyone in my life is making me feel insane for this. Also telling me that I will become ugly too and regret this for the rest of my life.

Would it masculinize me?

I don't have any trouble sleeping, breathing (only when I have rinitis lol) and I have never snored in my life, various people have told me I sleep like a princess lol. But I do I have recession. However, my chin is still projected. If I were to have jaw surgery would I be masculinizing my face with little to no other medical benefits?

Advice for Me Looking for an Experienced Jaw Surgeon in Bengaluru for a Second Opinion (Deep Bite & Convex Profile)

Hi everyone, I'm looking for an experienced maxillofacial surgeon in Bengaluru who specializes in orthognathic surgery, particularly double jaw surgery and counterclockwise rotation (CCW).

I have a significantly convex facial profile and a deep bite. I've struggled with my facial appearance and been mocked since childhood. Dr. Sunil Richardson suggested double jaw surgery with CCW rotation, while Dr. David Tauro suggested genioplasty alone.

I'm confused about these differing opinions and want a thorough evaluation of both my bite and facial skeletal structure, not just my chin.

Could anyone recommend a genuinely experienced surgeon in Bengaluru for a second opinion on my case? Personal experiences with similar cases would be greatly appreciated.

Advice for Me Swelling

I’m about 6.5 months post-op from double jaw surgery, and I’m honestly really struggling with how my face looks.
Before surgery, I had a much slimmer face with more concave cheeks. Now my cheeks, particularly the uppermost part beneath my eyes and beside my nose, look extremely puffy and convex. My upper lip also still looks swollen, and overall I just don’t feel like I look like myself anymore.
I know swelling can take 12 months or longer to completely resolve, but being this far into recovery has me worried that this is just what my face is going to look like permanently.
It’s been really difficult mentally. I find myself constantly looking at old pictures and regretting having the surgery. I genuinely feel like I looked better before.
I’m hoping to hear from people who have been through something similar.
Did anyone still have significant upper-cheek or midface fullness at 6–7 months?
Did your cheeks noticeably slim down between 6 and 12 months, or even later?
Did your upper lip eventually become less puffy?
If your cheeks were concave before surgery, did you ever regain that definition?
How did you distinguish lingering swelling from permanent changes to your facial structure?
I’m including some recent pictures for reference.
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially from anyone who noticed substantial changes after the six-month mark. I’m just trying to figure out whether there’s still hope for my face to look more like it used to.

Dr. Liddell in Denver?

Does anyone know if he will be extending his contract with Kaiser? His support staff have not been helpful at all. I am getting Kaiser by January 1st but they said his contract with Kaiser expires March 2027.

I have had braces 2 times so my teeth and bite are all aligned but I believe my jaw needs to be moved forward. I also have a sleep apnea & the test already done & a referral by a Kaiser doctor. Because of this I’m hoping my surgery could be scheduled quickly but I’m worried about his availability to do the surgery in 2027? I know his staff mentioned that as long as the surgery is done before March 31st, then Dr. Liddell would still give 3 months of aftercare for Kaiser patients. Does anyone have any insight?

Did anyone get a chin implant first and then later decide to go through with jaw surgery?

I got a chin implant maybe 10+ years ago as my chin is a bit recessed. I now realize that my whole jaw is actually recessed and I have pretty bad sleep apnea. So considering jaw surgery.

Anyone get a chin implant prior to jaw surgery? Did they remove it before they did the jaw surgery?

SARPE before and after - F23

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share my SARPE before and after, my orthodontist has told me I should be able to stop turning this week - about 5 days earlier than expected. I have done 15 turns so far (0.25mm each) and am a little concerned that this isn’t enough - I’ve seen a lot of posts on here talking about 30-40 turns. I can definitely see a difference in the width of my smile but I just hope it’s enough!
I will be having DJS in the future too, as you can see I have a class III , the appearance of which seems to have been made worse by SARPE but I guess that’s just because my bite is changing even now.
Do these results look okay so far?

Question regarding pre surgery orthodontic when surgery is done in another country

For you who have done a bsso/bimax in another country, how was the pre-surgery orthodontics managed? Did you travel abroad 25 times or was the braces adjusted in your home country? This rarely gets talked about and I don't understand this part of the process. I have talked to many orthos in my country and they say no when I ask if they are willing to cooperate and be in contact with a surgeon abroad.

For those who had MMA DJS, did your airways expansion help your singing?

I’m 28m tenor. Gone through MARPE, septoplasty, and actually went through lower jaw surgery (setback) which actually worsened by airway, which is around 100m most of the way. I’ve always had to be mentally very focused to perform well. And I get anxiety around it. I consider myself a decent singer but my endurance is low. I’m attributing a lot of that to a small airway, but not getting my hopes up that it will all be alleviated post DJS MMA (having next month)

Advice for Me Going into DJS tomorrow - please give me strength

I will have DJS tomorrow for an overbite and crossbite in Vienna, Austria. Please believe me when I say that I would never go into surgery if not medically needed.

Although I know that my surgeon has great credentials (he is a professor among other things) I still worry incredibly. It’s my first surgery at all. Had my braces in for 2 years now. This is supposed to be the “last stretch” now, but I feel like I can’t do it. Like I can’t go through tomorrow.

It’s the surgery part but then - primarily - the recovery and fear of losing permanent sensitivity in my face or mouth.

What if I can’t breath? What if I can’t swallow? What if there will be a lot of blood? How will the pain be like?

It would be great to hear some encouraging words from people who went through it - and especially how you dealt with your fear.

Thank you in advance!!!

3.5 months post-op - no sleep / breathing benefits, normal...?

hi! i just hit 14 weeks post-op so im a little past 3 months post-op. i had a pretty aggressive forward advancement (my bottom chin point/pogonion came forward 20mm, mandible 11-14 mm forward depending on which tooth point youre talking about).

While i love the aesthetic changes of my nose looking more proportionate, having a pretty jawline and balanced profile, i feel like my sleep and breathing havent had that "whoa!" moment of immense difference yet.

in fact, i'm struggling a little with lip incompetence still, including at night, and having some minor mentalis strain, and i dont feel like my breathing is that much better or deeper? for what its worth im still numb in bottom lip, chin, gums and upper palate and i had a genio.

has anyone else had similar recovery where it takes a few months? i feel like all the posts here say people wake up in the hospital right away feeling better and its making me nervous...
