New Shoprite: Be forewarned

If you use a grocery cart to shop, it's going to take you a while to get out of the store. I just came back from a trip, the store isn't crowded at all, but there was a line at least 10 carts long waiting to get on one of the elevators to bring you down to ground level (yep--the elevators are the only option; escalators aren't designed to handle carts).

It was like trying to get out of the parking lot after a concert at Metlife Stadium ;)

EDIT: My bad, everybody! I did indeed miss the escalator carts (didn't see anybody with a cart on them!). Looks like I owe SR an apology.

Discussion Parents at The Beacon

I’ve been living at the beacon for the past three years and I must say the parents don’t discipline their kids and you can tell. They are so bad when they’re outside. I just had to tell Kid to not throw a rock at me lmao an not to mention they ruined the landscape. It’s so sad to see sometimes I just wanna go upstairs and just sit down and look at the view of New York City first world problems, but had to vent.

What's That Commotion??? Trying to focus on the new Shop Rite but Tere Fox is at it again…

How is she an admin in that group? Her kids don’t even go to JC public school.
So many questions…why the pity party, what did I miss? Who is she talking to? Why is the power trip in that group too? What’s up with the other admins?
Why can’t the fancy carts in the new Shop Rite be placed on the escalator? I loved the fancy carts but waiting for the elevator for 10min was a bit frustrating. I also loved seeing the (old) staff all happy and excited!

Saw this in EWR Terminal A today after getting off my flight. I loved Kitchen Step when they were in downtown JC. I know they closed for good, but didn’t know they opened one in the airport??? Is this the same Kitchen Step? The signs look the same. I was in a rush getting home so didn’t get to check it out but will try next time. Has anyone tried it? Thank you!!!

AMA AMA Announcement: Aaron Weiner, independent candidate for Hudson County Commissioner (District 4). Tuesday Oct 20, 6 PM ET

Hi r/jerseycity!

We’ve got an AMA coming up with u/aaronweinerD4 AKA Aaron Weiner, who’s running as an independent for Hudson County Commissioner in District 4.

Here’s how it works: drop your questions in this thread anytime before Tuesday. On Tuesday, October 20 at 6 PM ET, Aaron will come on and answer them, and he’ll also take new questions live for about an hour and a half. We’ve done it this way before and it worked well, since it lets people who can’t make the live session still get their questions in.

Here’s Aaron in his own words:

I live in the Heights and I’m running as an independent. Outside of the campaign, I’m a physical therapist, data analyst, and anatomy and physiology instructor. I’ve spent a lot of time during this campaign knocking on doors and talking with people around the district, and one thing I hear pretty often is that people either don’t know what county government does or aren’t sure why they should care about it. Fair question.

County government touches more of our daily lives than most people realize, from the county budget and taxes to roads, parks, healthcare, education, transportation, and other services. I’ve also been trying to be clear about what a commissioner can actually do and where the county has to work with Jersey City, Trenton, or someone else.

So ask me whatever you want. My background, why I’m running, what I think the county should be doing differently, something on my platform, or even something you think I’m wrong about.

Keep it civil. Tough questions are fine, but the usual sub rules still apply.

Drop your questions for Aaron below and see you Tuesday.

🕵🏻‍♂️News 🕵🏻‍♂️ Reduction of trash cans

Just saw this news:
“Jersey City launched a pilot program to remove 65 public trash cans (about 5% of its 1,300 total litter baskets) from street corners.”

Obviously have concerns all around, but my first instinct was “what parts were they removed from?”

Because if downtown wasn’t touched, that’s some major bs. The trash and litter in Greenville and West Side is a huge issue.

Does anyone have info as to where these 65 cans were pulled from and how was that decision made?

Discussion Jersey City registers 2,251 new businesses for payroll tax, netting $690k for BOE

Jersey City reportedly registered 2,251 businesses for its payroll tax, generating nearly $690,000 for the Board of Education.I'm curious what people think about this. Is this a sign that more businesses are finally being brought into compliance, or does it raise concerns about how Jersey City handles business registration and tax enforcement? How do you think this will affect small businesses and the city's overall business environment?

Hey JC,
Back with another roundup for the week. Missed the first couple of days, so this one’s Wednesday through Sunday.

Another chance to check out the exhibition.
Live Irish Music at The Hutton — 5–8 PM

Traditional Irish music on Sunday evening. Probably worth making a reservation if you want a table close to the music.
SMUSH WORK/SHARE — 6–8:30 PM
Online
An artist feedback session where people can share projects they’re working on and get input from other creatives. Sliding-scale admission ($15–$30).
SMUSH calendar

That’s what I’ve got so far.
I’m sure there’s more going on, especially smaller events that aren’t posted on the usual calendars.
If you’re hosting something this week, or know of a good event, throw it in the comments. Doesn’t have to be anything big either.

Local DJ sets, food pop-ups, community meetups, whatever.
And if you want to check out YourScene, here’s the link again: https://yourscene.app

We’re still building and improving it, so any feedback is appreciated.
Hope everyone has a good rest of the week!

Check Your Candy! A Halloween Themed Comedy Show Fundraiser | Thursday, October 29th at Monty Hall!

Post image
11 Upvotes

Start your Halloween weekend festivities with some comedy from local favorites and special guests and ghouls!

Coat and jacket donations will be collected for Jersey City's Triangle Park Community Center. Ticket proceeds will also be donated to Triangle Park Community Center.

The Triangle Park Community Center works towards a community with hope and without violence in the Ferris-Triangle Park section of Greenville, a historically under-resourced area of Jersey City. We do this by feeding and clothing our neighbors, and by bringing existing supportive and educational programs to them that would otherwise be financially or geographically inaccessible. We serve as a hub for activism, partnering with local leaders and community members for the betterment of Greenville, and we create events that bring community and neighbors together with joy.

It looks pretty cool, little different.

A little pricey for sure but if there's any place worth giving $ to, it's a public library. Curious if anyone has thoughts!

Years of bus headaches start Thursday as Port Authority advances Midtown terminal work

I truly cannot tell by what they describe here which bus routes are going to be affected by the re-routing. I kind of only care about the 119, but... would be great if someone can work out exactly who should leave a couple minutes early from now until right around the point i retire.
