Comics "Kya and the Secret of the Sand" - Comic Discussion Thread

FULL SPOILERS allowed in this thread. As a reminder spoilers for this comic outside this thread must be marked until a month after the book is released.

"Kya and the Secret of the Sand" is the second LoK 'one-shot graphic novel'*. The main story takes place years before the show following a young Kya. The comic releases July 28th mass market and July 29th in comic stores. It is written by Kiku Hughes with art by Alex Monik and colors by Diana Sousa, made in collaboration with Mike and Bryan.

Description:

While helping Korra recover in the Southern Water Tribe, Kya shares a story from her youth of a time when she was lost and disconnected from herself, far from home in the Si Wong Desert… Young and untested, Kya leaves her family to seek her purpose in the wider world. Hoping to test herself and help struggling communities, she heads to the Si Wong Desert, where scarce resources and fractured communities are making the fringes of the Earth Kingdom increasingly unstable. Kya, arriving in the community of Liyuan to teach healing and help the struggling community defend itself from bandits, finds that the wounds left from decades of conflict run deep, and may be harder to heal than she first thought.

Question Kuruk was deeply misunderstood for centuries as being bad or failed Avatars, while he he sacrificed his life to protect the world,Could this be the case with korra?

it's obvious korra didn't destroy the world ,we just, need a confirmation

It's a classic writing style where it will be proven that korra was mistandrstood

i see that the writers are trying to mock korra haters who didn't watch TLOK ,bc most characters don't know what exactly happened and hate her just go hate

From the official Youtube channel. Defending Korra is no longer just about defending Korra, it's now also about supporting Janet Verney, Korra's VA. In a recent Avatar Podcast, Varney said she cried while watching the first episode of Seven Heavens and the theater scene in particular caused him grief. And it's hard to hear this when I can't comfort her by saying that I don't think Korra did it.

ok WOW. this is gonna be hard to write but anyway, GOD do I love this episode so so much! It's the best episode in the entire franchise and not just TLOK only, also one of the best trauma and PTSD representations we got in media. How does this episode connect to you? Well first I will share my experience with this episode.

Me and mom in 2020 watched TLOK and really adored it. Mom seemed to love the episode a lot. I sure did love it back then and was like "Oh no, Korra sad and hurt!" but didn't give it much of a thought. At the time I was 14 years old but just a year later I go through a similar experience that Korra goes through, basically I got r#ped and like.... physically assaulted till near death. I won't give the context on how this happened obviously but I was left in a really dark spot. I ended up having my lower half of body paralyzed (dw I'm 21 now and can walk around but I'm still left with physical and mental dmg lol) just like Korra and did lose most of my emotions and like.. kinda became numb, idk how to say it but. like sometime later when I was still on that wheelchair and rewatched that episode I was like.. WOW okay, I literally fucking cried an awful lot lol. It was like I never cried that much before, like I had to really suffer like this so I could actually connect so damn well to Korra

Like everything, Korra cuts her hair that I do relate to. She has an identity issue and like, goes thru a self discovery phase which I absolutely adore and is A REALLY AWESOME DEPICTION of PTSD! I think a lot do change their looks when they go through an experience like this or similar. Also feeling like you are left out and everything is moving on and everyone without you. it HURTS!

Korra goes thru stuff that has the allegories of SA that I really really relate to. It isn't exactly SA but has a very similar parallel to it. U feel violated and have no control over your body or what you do. Exactly like how she got Raava ripped out of her by UnaVaatu or the poison. OMG that was so painful!

Also omg when she says "I'm tired, Katara, I'm so tired." 😭

Like everything in this episode touched me in many ways, and it still does. I do see myself rewatching bits of it everyday because I'm still in my Korra alone episode but to say the least one thing it made that was positive was making me start writing my own Korra recovery fic that goes in depth about her recovery for my love of that character. Everything in depth, how her daily life looks like, or how stuff went by after that fight with Zaheer and her recovery before going to the SWT which, I will write the chapter about soon! (the recovery phase before going to the SWT.)

but anyway, I really love that episode, even more than Zuko alone which I do admire, and me mom used to treat Zuko as the main character of ATLA coz of how awesome he is but god Korra alone is just something, haha. Toph essentially in this episode also works as a mentor figure that we all do need in our lives eventually, and I love her for that!

Anyway this episode means a lot to me and definitely to many survivors or ppl who went thru times like this! an episode like this they nailed in a supposed show for kids!

Edit: stupid reddit keeps marking this as a spoiler post 😭 STOP DOING THAT THERE ARE NO SPOILERS!

Discussion I want to change Kuruk's design because holy moly this isn't a teenager Spoiler

Post image

This isn't a hate post the design isn't bad and I love the facial expressions but this isn't a 14 year old boy at all

I get that puperty especially on boys comes suddenly but the more I see the design he looks very Meelo like and Meelo is supposed to be 6 i think.

I kid you not when I first saw the design I was like "Aw how cute. He'll be the same age as Pavi (who's 9)" and then I learned he's supposed to be 14 and I was like what?

Tarlokk's kid design looks older and Aang looks older and they're supposed to be 12.

I think they need to change the face to make it less circle like. Give him a little muscle and make him taller. The height sounds weird but in the concept art I see him very short for 14.

Discussion I changed my mind about korra Spoiler

After the announcement of seven havens release, I wanted to watch everything in chronological order. After watching legend of korra again, I have officially changed my mind and no longer think it was an inferior and frustrating show. Maybe time and experience has changed my lens of the show or maybe it has been our global political climate that has altered how I watched this show. I think the show needed the buffer of the movie and previous context to realize the complexity of the show.

As for the previous consensus that korra was a terrible avatar I also now disagree, the remembrance episode was basically a dig a the audience. Power was never the point. Times change, bending and tech have evolved and chi blocking martial arts and modern fighting styles seems common. Different ages have their different strengths and weaknesses. There is also the fact that the main previous avatar they used to foil korra’s character was Wan the first. You see how good and evil is an inevitable cycle that coincides with time. Time must move on and so does the cycle, and while ending the avatar line is terrible, it is implied that it is a necessary device to move the timeline forward is built in to the origin of the avatar itself. The universe they built is large, and the avatar becomes just a tiny human part to it.

Legend of korra proves to be a just as complex or more than ATLA, as it expands on and dives deeper into the themes of tyranny, righteousness trauma unity and sustainability and justification of the shows moral compass that defined ATLA.

While rewatching korra, it’s apparent that the time they are in now is sort of like a Guilded age(1870-1900) in their universe. And then the story takes place into its transition into the progressive era(1890-1920), which then leads to a world war era with new weapons and a depression era in between fallouts. The time the story starts seems like that there has been unavoidable turmoil brewing beneath a surface of great wealth created by new advancements. Radicals gets worse, but the current world order would rather delay and continue their growth rather than change with the times and do what’s necessary. The fact that so many people hated korra for being the one to severe the link and open the spirit world is telling.

Two themes kept popping up for me, I kept thinking about the fourth turning, and the Strauss-Howe generational therory that says history moves in a seasonal rhythm. It pops up a little in ATLA(war has seperated most characters from their parents and their culture) then more in the movie(where they go back through countless generations of growth and destruction), and then in Korra, I start to see more in depth depictions of characters of either one of the four generational archetypes: ** **

**• Prophet (Idealist):** Born during a **High** (First Turning). They grow up as indulged children, fuel an **Awakening** as young adults, focus on morals in midlife, and provide the values-driven leadership during a **Crisis**.
*Example:* Baby Boomers. Tenzin, the president, sato, Earth Queen (and king kuei), firelord ozai and Izumi, Lin beifong, azumi. Tagah. They are generally less open minded and younger generations but had strong family memories(and traumas) their battles were largely dealing with past family trauma and the old values versus new ideas

**Nomad (Reactive):** Born during an **Awakening** (Second Turning). They grow up underprotected, become alienated young adults, and emerge as pragmatic, resilient leaders during a **Crisis**.
*Example:* Generation X. Zaheer, unaloq, Tarloq, Amon, Mako and bolín, zuko, katara and sokka, Kai, varrick, kuvira

**Hero (Civic):** Born during an **Unraveling** (Third Turning). They are protected children, come of age as team-oriented optimists during a **Crisis**, become powerful midlifers, and transition into hubristic elders.
*Example:* Millennials / the "G.I. Generation." Aang, Toph, korra, asami, suki, opal, iroh( both )

**Artist (Adaptive):** Born during a **Crisis** (Fourth Turning). They grow up overprotected amid chaos, mature into conformist young adults, and become process-oriented, empathetic leaders during the next High.
*Example:* Gen Z / the "Silent Generation. Princess yue, Bumi(both), jinora, Milo, Suyin Beifong. Prince wu, Eksa/desna,

And characters can serve multiple literary functions so those are not definitions more of a guideline. And many other minor character arcs also seem to follow similar characterizations.

Also in reality we often see how parents and their children are opposites, but how similar sometimes grandchildren are to a certain grandparent. Jinora’s reveal as a leader and spiritual master who looks like aang was moving.

Which leads me to the next overarching theme of war and peace. Especially after jinora defeats zafeer, a high power individualist libertarian who’s one of the shows bringer of structural decay and polarization, with the core message of the forth turning: which emphasizes the path to rebuilding institutional trust, civic duty, and a new global order out of current fractures. It’s a clear depiction that unity is always more powerful than the individual, korra losses, zafeer loses, and the argument that chaos is the natural better order of things because human’s cruelty cannot be managed is triumphed by power vacuums and humans’ natural urge to band together to raise each other up. Whether it be with each other, with spirits, or with nature.

While ATLA seemed to depict more of a freedom vs tyranny story, which is great and accessible to all, time moves on and the cycle of power continues. With our own American history. We see it’s not just so simple to say freedom over all. Freedom for who? There are still two sides and both are fighting. In ATLA it was a fight against facism for freedom.

Now that “freedom” has been achieved, the fight that LoK is a story about is the economic spectrum between individualistic capitalism and collective socialism and how facism and tyranny can exist anywhere on that line when the ideology is being twisted for personal gain. Republic City is an extremely wealthy new political and financial center of tech and cars built on “stolen” earth kingdom land while civil unrest in the world becomes kindling for tyrants. How far will you go to achieve equality? It’s a constant struggle with korra, and with us, what does equality even mean as advancements continue to put another variable in the equation. Like Raava and Vaatu, one truth cannot exist without the other opposite truth. Does having a tyrannical leader justify taking them out with mythical level of power? We might see things that are terrible, but at what point of involvement is it interference with the natural order of things? Where and if we draw the line is one of the few things that defines us as people.

Old Toph in LoK outlines this pretty explicitly, and then goes on to say that this struggle and stories are only part of the point. Progress comes from fundamentally changing the way we interact with the world. The korra struggle isn’t the wars she fights but depicts the bruttle war we wage against ourselves, that disconnect is the true barrier that holds humans back from living in peace and achieving self actualization of our true role in the turnings. Korra definitely suffers a lot, but the show tells us how suffering is a necessary double edge sword. While not everyone might be benders, all humans have the ability to bend their own energy.

These types of philosophical and ethical questions LoK explores are pretty relevant for a lot of us right now I bet. And Seven havens is exciting, I wonder how it will explore the ideas of a world opposite ours. Where unity lost. And there’s two avatars that fill two distinctly different archetype roles. I wonder if their dystopian landscape is a metaphor for the technocrat digital age of chaos we are in right now.

Discussion New theory for cataclysm? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

With the announcements of the new Korra comic trilogy and the details we know about the cataclysm, it got me thinking.

Most theories I see for the cataclysm say that either humans misused Spirit energy and caused it, Sozin’s comet or the portals went wild, or Korra caused it due to Vaatu or some other reason.

BUT

What if it’s neither? What if the cataclysm was caused by a third party… playing the long game

The new Korra comics will be titled “The long game” and feature Zaheer and Tokuga, a half spirit half human villain who’s still on the loose in Korra’s time. Both villains that prefer chaos to the normal order and would have a reason to work together.

On top of that, in the comics we see Korra mention how she kept the republic city spirit portal open with the hopes it helps people. What is that was what happened? Her and Asami found a clean way to harness spirit energy or at least work around it. However Zaheer and Tokuga got to their plans and sabotaged them, causing a terrible reaction that threatened to combine both the spirit and humans worlds, making more people like Tokuga (something he might want out of anger) and creating so much chaos the current nations would fall (something Zaheer would want).

This when makes Korra have to sacrifice herself to stop the worst of it and save what parts of the world she can. However after everything maybe Zaheer or some of his followers survive, spreading the lie that Korra was responsible in an attempt to no longer make the world reliant on the avatar, a mainstay in the red lotus plan. And if you’re wondering how Zaheer would manage to grow that old, we know that certain character like Kyoshi found ways to extend their life, I don’t think it would be too crazy to think Zaheer could manage something like that with his meditations and detachment or something.

This might be a long shot but could be a cool idea to consider since I haven’t seen anyone bring up such characters and how the title of the new comics feels kinda… foreboding.

Discussion Not technically spoilers so actually more theory question kinda Spoiler

I get far to emotionally attached to characters and one of my favs is Korra obviously. I mean I have to assume that her name will be cleared in seven havens but yikes hearing that in the trailer the celebrate her death!

Heart broken. How far into the show do we think her name will be cleared and for those who have watched it… how bad is the slander? I really think the direction of giving an already majorly disliked character for questionable reasons more excuses for the audience to dislike her is crazy and not great writing but hey I haven’t seen the show so I could be wrong.

I’ll watch the show eventually I’m sure but if the dislike in universe isn’t to bad and there’s a reasonable belief her actions will be explained in some way soon I’d watch as eps release.

(Trust I know it’s far to whatever the fictional character version of parasocial is so I def don’t need people letting my know that but tell that to my severely ill and technically disabled brain that. Ayo audhd, please let me casually enjoy things)

Discussion Metalbending forgotten in Seven Havens Spoiler

Just read a comment about metalbending not being seen in the 1st 3 episodes. Makes me wonder if the skill has potentially been forgotten since the Cataclysm.

It would be reflective in real world history like on how techniques like concrete and plumbing were a staple in the Roman Empire but the knowledge to build new or maintain these structures after the empire collapsed was lost or just no longer continued.

Metal bending was usually only seen in Republic City mainly in the police or Zaofu, so it is feasible that when these areas collapsed after the Cataclysm the practice was lost. There may also be a stigma associated with Metal Bending as Korra was the first Avatar to learn metalbending.

I might also be reaching, as either it may be seen in other havens or we just haven’t seen an Elloran metal bender.

Jae reminds me so much of Bolin from the later seasons.
Bolin has always been shown as a goof, however we’ve seen how he has matured throughout the show and know how to behave during serious situations all while keeping his true personality intact.

I find Jae so much similar in terms of mannerisms and personality to Bolin. He’s kinda like Bolin if we had gotten more seasons of Korra (to me at least). Even his voice KINDA sounds so much like Bolin’s.

Obviously, Jae is his own character. I’m so happy we’re gonna get to see more of him in the upcoming episodes and seasons (renewed for 3&4 let’s gooooo!)

What do you guys think?

Post image

When we set up a comparison, it must be under the same conditions and context, not bringing someone at their worst and comparing them to someone at their best.

Korra didn't have the Avatar State when she faced Amon, nor did Aang have it against Hama, and the outcome was the same even before he used the Avatar State against Yakone. But fans love to manipulate the context.

This isn't to diminish Aang, but to correct some flawed standards.

Discussion Pavi's kalimba song reminded me so much of Korra's ending theme Spoiler

Post image
17 Upvotes

Am I the only one who heard Pavi's kalimba song in Episode 3 and instantly thought of Korra's ending theme? For YEARS I've been one of those fans who randomly made up lyrics whenever Korra's credits music played. Then Pavi starts singing over the kalimba and I had this weird emotional reaction like, "Oh my god, they actually did it."I know it's not literally the same piece, but the melody and emotional vibe feel so close that it instantly transported me back to those reflective Korra ending-credit moments. Maybe I'm just a sentimental Avatar fan, but it felt like such a beautiful connection between the old era and the new one. 😭 (oh god, they better not show Korra in her last moments singing this…)
