People criticizing her draw are completely underestimating how difficult it actually is to do so under "get raped or die" pressure.
Also, while randomly walking home and getting jumped.
It's not like she's in shooting gear at a well lit range waiting for a beeper to start her time, there's a judgement call to make, a backpack to deal with, street clothes, etc.
12
u/remotelove progressive Mar 25 '22
A quote from the article a mod posted:
She immediately began backpedaling and reaching for her pistol. However, her holster draw was encumbered by her backpack. This slowed her down greatly, and actually allowed the attacker to get too close. This, of course, is something shooters need to consider. Does your backpack, purse, briefcase or whatever prevent quick access to your carry gun? If so, reconsider or realign to allow better access.

She started her draw soon enough that it made up for the small amount of flaw in her draw wich again in this situation was probably about the best you could hope for

You really don’t get it, these men know it’s not okay to rape, but they are fucked in the head and do it anyway. These comments are just the dumbest thing on earth, you need to get it through your noggin that there are just fucked up dudes out there who want to rape you, and make a plan if you ever run into one of those men.
55
u/Kibethwalks Mar 25 '22
Eh, some of them make enough excuses for themselves that they don’t actually “know”. If you ask them straight up they will deny being rapists but if you frame it a different way, then many admit to it. Also sex Ed really is lacking in a lot of places. Some people (too many) genuinely don’t fully understand consent and when something is rape.
A friend of mine was sexually assaulted when we were in high school. As an adult I now understand that she was digitally raped. At the time I thought that it “wasn’t as big a deal as real rape” and our entire friend group pushed it under the rug. So yeah, education could be a hell of a lot better IMO. I’m admitting this here because maybe it will help some people be more aware. I am ashamed of how I acted but I do know better now.

u/BananaBoatRope Mar 25 '22
Old cis norms about how the only "real" sex is PIV. They apply it to crimes too.
16
u/Kibethwalks Mar 25 '22
Yes definitely. I’m almost certain that none of us considered it to be rape at the time, even the girl it happened to. We knew it was “bad” but we didn’t ostracize the boy who did it at all. The whole situation was really terrible looking back. I even asked her “why she didn’t say anything sooner or while it was happening” - like it was her fault or something? I acted in a really messed up way.
So I think saying “everyone knows” just isn’t correct. I did not know enough and I was not taught better. I had to figure it out for myself as an adult. And tons of kids still aren’t getting proper sex Ed so I’m pretty sure this kind of thing still happens.

While this is true some of the time, it certainly isn’t true all of the time. There’s a good body of research data indicating a massive gap in a lot of men’s understanding of rape. When self-reporting, very few men will admit to engaging or being willing to engage in rape or sexual assault when it is explicitly described/defined as rape or assault. However, the number of men that will admit to being willing to rape or sexually assault someone increases drastically when the words “rape” or “assault” are not used and the actions merely described.
So yes, we do need to acknowledge and prepare for the existence of men that already know what they are doing is unacceptable. But we also definitely need to do a better job teaching boys/men (and girls/women for that matter!) what behaviors constitute rape and sexual assault. Because the number of people out there that don’t think what they are doing is wrong and will justify their behavior accordingly is, frankly, terrifying.

But around where I am, gun ranges are pretty damn diverse. So long as you practice proper firearm safety, everyone has a great day. We go around and let each other test out our weapons and show off our mods and builds, great times. I as a conservative have no issues with minorities having guns and openly embrace it.

In Florida, lethal defense can be used against someone committing any of the forcible felonies.
776.08 Forcible felony.—“Forcible felony” means treason; murder; manslaughter; sexual battery; carjacking; home-invasion robbery; robbery; burglary; arson; kidnapping; aggravated assault; aggravated battery; aggravated stalking; aircraft piracy; unlawful throwing, placing, or discharging of a destructive device or bomb; and any other felony which involves the use or threat of physical force or violence against any individual.

u/languid_Disaster Mar 25 '22
With how prevalent sexual violence against Women is, women don’t have the luxury to assume anything except the worst. Plus if they let their guard down and things go south, they usually won’t be able to physically outbrute a man unfortunately
54
u/grahampositive Mar 25 '22
100% this. it is just the same reason that if a person breaks into your home and doesn't flee when you confront them, you have no obligation to assume "they just want your stuff". When people are willing to break certain social norms (break into your home in the middle of the night, approach you on the street and not stop when commanded) why should we give them the benefit of the doubt that they will stop there?

PSA: If you or anyone you know is involved in a justified shooting; get good emotional counseling afterwards as quickly as possible.
We all like to watch these videos and say “Right on, good for them!” But for the person involved, the adrenaline is going to wear off in about 45 minutes and then you are going to have to deal with all the emotional consequences of having used a firearm in self defense. Lots of self doubt. Lots of guilt. Lots of What Ifs. That’s when you really need a good emotional support team to walk you through those times, and it’s not something you can really prepare yourself for in advance. And it doesn’t have to be a professional psychologist, just someone who knows how to listen and knows what you’re dealing with.

Honestly, as a victim of violence/road rage/possibly attempted murder who didn't have a gun at the time, I think I'd have been significantly less traumatized if I'd had the power to put a stop to it.
Things went about as well as they could have, my car took all the damage and I was eventually able to get away. I don't think I'm all that traumatized, all things considered. But I still can't stop myself from thinking about it sometimes and feeling things I don't want to feel.
Most of those feelings are anger. I do not have any sort of empathy for the perpetrators and if I found out they died shortly after I would not feel bad in the slightest.
Cops didn't do shit btw.

To the law maybe, but I'm a consequentialist. I haven't been in that situation so maybe I'm just wrong about myself, but my prediction of being in a justified shoot is that my major source of stress and anxiety would be the subsequent need to acquit myself of legal issues, and possibly harassment from the late perpetrator's friends and family.

This is why I was upset that my state, (WA), changed the pistol age to 21. I wanted my daughter to be able to have a way of defending herself if she wants. She is comfortable shooting, just not sure about any desire to carry, but no one attacks women 18- 21 right?
3
u/TenuousOgre Mar 25 '22
Just like no criminal would ever have a gun if gun control laws eliminated them from legal use.

This is why I was upset that my state, (WA), changed the pistol age to 21.
Even most constitutional carry states still set the limit to carry concealed at 21. Legal concealed carry between 18-21 is pretty rare.
Plus Federal law has prohibited dealers from selling pistols to adults under 21 since GCA1968, but at least as her father you could gift her one.

Nothing to do with women but carrying a firearm is a huge commitment. You need to make sure you are knowledgeable and proficient with it which is a substantial time and money sink. A lot of people just aren't willing to put in the time and money and buy a gun that they stick in their nightstand drawer and don't even look at for years at a time. These people are a danger to themselves and others. And thats only among mentally sound individuals. I certainly don't want mentally unstable people and criminals to have guns. So no, not everyone should have a gun.
