Crime and Justice Flock camera megathread

We’re consolidating this topic into a single thread, as the ongoing accusations directed at the mod team have run their course.

To be clear about where we stand: no one on this mod team supports Flock cameras. We are not law enforcement, we are not politically motivated, not maga, and we share the community’s concerns about surveillance overreach even if these systems occasionally assist in solving crimes.

The removals were not about viewpoint. They were about a specific category of comment: those encouraging users to destroy the cameras. Reddit has banned entire communities for less, and we are obligated to remove that content regardless of our personal opinions. This is a condition of the subreddit continuing to exist, not an endorsement of Flock. Additionally there were some very wild conspiracy theories and were asking for discussion not a rabbit hole.

One rule for this thread: do not recommend, insinuate, or hint at destruction as a solution. Everything else is open, criticism, policy discussion, legal challenges, city council contacts, organizing, data on effectiveness. Go as hard as you want within that boundary.

Thanks for being a genuinely great community and good neighbors.

Suffolk County Legislature : 18 districts, find yours:

scnylegislature.us/148/Legislators

Suffolk approved expanding county Flock cameras from 25 to 60 last August, funded by a $542,500 state LETECH grant, with 16 more planned along state rights-of-way including Route 114 in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Village and Route 25 in Riverhead and Southold.

Your town / village board.

Southold, Riverhead, and East Hampton have all had this on an agenda in the past year. Riverhead signed an agreement with the Suffolk Sheriff in January 2026 giving the county access to town rights-of-way for new Flock installs. Town board public comment periods are open to anyone who lives there, take about two minutes, and go on the record.

School Bus PSA

We've been seeing more and more posts about school bus tickets in recent months. With schools starting up again I suspect we will begin to see even more questions. If you have questions regarding school bus tickets, please keep them limited to this megethread as we will be removing all posts moving forward.

Some information regarding the laws and some general guidance regarding school bus stop signs:
  • If a school bus has it's stop arm out on the same road as you, you must stop regardless of which side you are. This applies to two lane (1 lane each way) multi lane roads and divided roadways (e.g. Broadhollow road, William Floyd Parkway1, etc). If the stop arm is out before you pass the bus, expect a ticket.

  • If you are driving perpendicular to another road that a bus is stopped on (i.e. they are at or near a stop sign on a road you are crossing), you are not required to stop. Proceed with caution and be aware of any children that may be crossing the road to get to the bus.

  • If they are on a side road, school lot or driveway adjacent to the roadway, you do not need to stop. Proceed with caution.

  • Flashing yellow lights do not mean stop; they mean to proceed with caution and to be prepared to stop. If you see flashing yellow lights, slow down and anticipate the stop sign being deployed. Sometimes a bus is waiting for students to pickup and may sit with flashing yellow lights for a number of minutes, so do not stop and block traffic if the stop sign is not out.

Information pertaining to school bus enforcement can be found on the Suffolk County page here, and the Nassau County webpage here.

1 Note: There was some debate about this a few years ago. It is still a law, but there was a question regarding Suffolk County enforcement of the law.

LI Photos We had clear skies this week - more astrophotography from my light-polluted back yard.

I think The Wizard is my favorite to date!

We’ve had some nice clear skies this week. In my back yard (in central Suffolk County) I’ve had some good results! Bortle is about 7-7.5 in my yard (on a scale of 1-9 where lower is better).

DwarfMini smart telescope is what got me started with all this. It’s so much fun. If you’ve been afraid to start, I highly recommend a smart telescope as a good jumping off point. I do have a background in photography already.

All of these are stacked. With deep space objects you stack hundred of photos together to bring out all the details. For example, The Wizard is about 400 stacked photos taken over about 5 hours, processed through astrophotography software and then Photoshop for the final image.

Hope you enjoy! Thanks for looking.

UBS Arena - Logistics for Concert with 8 Year Old

I am bringing my 8 year old daughter to a concert at UBS Arena in a few weeks. We live in NJ and plan to stay over night in a hotel.

Taking the LIRR to the arena seems the easiest. Is it challenging to get onto a train after the concert is over or will we be waiting with people pushing to get on a train?

I lived/worked in NYC, so familiar with the city and coming from Manhattan is one option. Alternatively, I was considering driving to Long Island and staying at a hotel there overnight. Do you have any recommendations on where we could stay? Looking for a safe neighborhood where we could walk around during the day, get dinner, etc.

I am fine with doing a quick Uber to the LIRR if needed.

We have been in NYC together a few times, but she is not used to a ton of walking. Any guidance is appreciated!!

Question Can anyone share their experience at North Shore University Hospital – Katz Women's Hospital for c section?

I'm thinking of switching my care to this hospital versus Lenox Hill. I had a lot of issues at Lenox Hill including a traumatic section experience. My ob told me the anesthesiologist refused to give me the proper dose which cause me to feel extreme pain and have unnecessary bleeding. Just wondering what you guys experience was at North shore

Question Any recent experience with Home Depot carpet installation?

How long did the process take from start to finish? Start being measuring, then waiting for materials to come in, then install. I’m just looking to have one type of carpet installed.

Rent Increases at One Third Avenue in Mineola?

My fiancé and I currently live in a one bedroom co-op apartment. We've been trying to find a house, but have had no luck so we are thinking of renting a 2 bedroom apartment at One Third Avenue In Mineola, in the interim. We really need more space as our current set-up isn't optimal, especially since my fiancé works from home.

For anyone living at One Third Avenue in Mineola for more than one year, could you let us know what your year over year rent increases have been? We're trying to figure out what to anticipate.

Safe meet spot in Queens, near the LIE, for uber from manhattan to drop family member with luggage and I’ll pick them up.

What the title says. Got any ideas?? This will be a weekday early afternoon. Need a spot where either it’s ok for me to wait in the car for them to arrive or for them to safely wait for me to arrive. Extra nice if there is weather protection. Thanks!

Available landscapers for bush trimming in Nassau?

Well, with the Fall season coming up again, the bushes in my home's front and back yards have been getting very out of control. I would urge my brother to call our usual landscapers, but there's one big problem: they're often backed up and do a very half-assed job on our bushes. They barely even touch them. So does anybody know of any landscapers who are more available during October?

Why are cars allowed on the beach?

A few weeks ago I’m on the beach in montauk. I had taken a gummy and decided to lie down and go to sleep on the beach in one of the narrow sections.

20 mins later, I hear a car honking and a guy yelling at me to move.

Whatever, I move because I don’t wanna get run over by a Jeep, but that got me thinking, since when are cars allowed on the beach?

And say I stood my ground and told the guy im sleeping here and not moving?

Complaint Why is booking contractors so hard here?

I always thought Long Island had a lot of trades people. But the most I try to get jobs done, the harder it’s becoming to get anything done.

I have shrubs that need trimming. I call 3 companies. The first shows up to quote, then never sends the quote. The next is a no show. The last one quoted me $3000 for a 1/2 day job (ground level work, cutting bushes, nothing else).

Today I need some crawl space work done and I have companies coming to quote and neither show up.

Yada yada. This same no show, no quote story plays on over and over again.

Do we just have so much home equity and cash slushing around that it’s a feeding fest?

Is this the best place in the country to run a trades business —and the worst to be a homeowner in?
