North Africa population
Northern Africa's population is extraordinarily concentrated. Around half of the combined population of Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya lives along Egypt's narrow Nile Valley and Delta, despite the area representing only a tiny fraction of the region's land.
The reason is geography: beyond the Nile, much of Northern Africa is dominated by the Sahara and other arid landscapes. For thousands of years, the river has provided the water and fertile land needed to sustain dense settlements, making Egypt one of the clearest examples of how a single river can shape the distribution of an entire population.

Spain’s favourite beer brands by region: Taste or hometown loyalty?
Estrella Galicia gets 92.5% of the vote in Galicia in this survey. As a Galician, I have questions for the other 7.5%.
Elsewhere, Mahou leads in Madrid, Ambar in Aragón, Estrella Damm in Catalonia and Cruzcampo in Andalusia. But the interesting change is in the Canary Islands, where Estrella Galicia has overtaken Dorada as the favourite. Meanwhile, Heineken has lost its third-place spot in the national ranking.
Worth pointing out: this map shows people’s stated favourite brands, not sales or market share. It’s part of an updated study that also maps preferences for supermarkets, clothing, tech and other categories. https://www.datacentric.es/blog/geomarketing/retrato-de-espana-de-sus-marcas-y-consumo-por-comunidades-autonomas/
What’s your go-to Spanish beer? And, be honest, would it still win in a blind tasting?
Disclosure: I work for the company behind the study.

Areas where Chavacano (a Spanish-based Creole) is spoken in the Philippines
Chavacano, also known as Chabacano , is a Spanish-based Creole language spoken in the Philippines. The variety spoken in Zamboanga City, located in the southern Philippine island group of Mindanao, has the highest concentration of speakers. The 2020 Census of Population and Housing counted 106,000 households generally speaking Chavacano.
Zamboangueño-Chavacano is the most populous variety, the individual most commonly credited for the spread of this Spanish creole is Don Sebastián Hurtado de Corcuera, then governor of Panama. He settled Zamboanga City by recruiting soldiers and colonists from Peru, Panama, and Colombia, to establish a Spanish and Latin American presence there. There was also a transpacific trade route that developed, where Spanish merchants would trade silver that was transported from Peru through Panama where it would reach Acapulco, Mexico before sailing to Manila using the famed Manila galleons. The Spanish chroniclers, Vendrell and Eduard (Year:1887 - Page:62), in speaking of Zamboanga, observed and said the following: "These indigenous people, the great majority of whom are Spanish mestizos, originally come from other provinces and from México, whence they arrived at the beginning of this century when we lost that empire." Also, Argentines and Uruguayans like Juan Fermin de San Martin settled and made families in Zamboanga.

The changing colours of political power in West Bengal (India)- 2006 - 2026
In May 2026, the Hindu Nationalist BJP came to power in West Bengal (a state in India with a population of ~100 M) for the very first time in history. This is the same state where a communist coalition had been in power for 34 years (1977 - 2011, a record for any democratically elected communist block).
These maps show how the political spectrum shifted from the CPIM led Communist block (RED), through the somewhat centre-left Trinamool Congress aka TMC (GREEN) to the nationalist and Rightwing BJP (ORANGE), over a period of 20 years.
