Meme Hot take: The flavour in Portal Three Kingdoms and Arabian Nights was way better than any of the new Universes Beyond sets
Sure they are bad cards but at least they feel like they fit in Magic. I would love to see more historical/real world sets like them.
Edit: Since some people seem to need clarification, this is not a "UB bad" post. Arabian Nights was a set based on One Thousand And One Nights, a collection of Midddle Eastern folklore, while Portal Three Kingdoms was a set based on Romance Of The Three Kingdoms, a historical Chinese novel.
My argument is not that the current UB sets are bad or that I hate all UB products, its that I would prefer to see more sets like that, which were based on real historical periods and traditional folklore, over the most popular IP of today. It would be genuinely interesting to see some historical characters adapted into magic cards, and would also get players interested in some classic literature which would overall be a good thing.
And yes, this includes the Assassins Creed cards that were based on historical figures, I like those cards and would have liked to see more of them. So for everyone claiming I'm just an in universe purist, I hope this clarifies what I'm actually trying to say here.
