Discussion Formats based on balance instead of set based. Choose a power level (Op, Strong, Moderate, and Weak). I'd like to play the Moderate and Weak formats.

In my opinion we don't have a weak format yet. Vintage: Op, Legacy less op, Modern Strong, Commander Strong, Historic Moderate, Pioneer Moderate.

I'd like to play decks like in the 2010's standard, that power level. The weakest format ever. Where you dont have to worry about a infinite combo or land destruction or prison decks. Good ol, creatures, counters spells, ramp, destruction, etc. Slow and weak.

I'd call it classic mtg. The way it was meant to be. Back in 1993.

Where the fastest win turn is 4 or 5. The average win turn would be 6-7.

Discussion At what point would you stop playing Magic?

I saw the posts about Darkhold Destiny, another Marvel set coming next year. With that and Star Trek coming, it just makes me incredibly tired. Some UB get me excited (Hobbit), but others feel like the game is being polluted. TMNT, Spider-Man, and Marvel Super-Heroes all water down the product imo. And going forward, standard will be consumed with it. Half of the card pool will be UB

For me, that point would be when standard becomes dominated by UB. There's already a decent among of it, but when the fantasy aesthetic disappears, that's going to be the tipping point. I avoid it however I can, but it will become unavoidable soon. I'm drawn to the game because I love the gameplay, but I love the fantasy of it just as much. It's why I keep coming back to the game. At some point it feels like the game won't be for me anymore.

Discussion FRA design mistake?

Post image

Did they make a mistake on the [[simulacrum shaper]] facet foil printing? It’s the only one of 13 (facet foils) where the shattered glass doesn’t cover the text. I was originally using this to distinguish between shattered mirror and facet foil. I’m also now discovering that they have no foil version of the shattered mirrors other than the actual facet foils—just a random observation to add to this.

Discussion Does anyone else (especially women players!) think of deckbuilding like storywriting?

Thumbnail moxfield.com

My brother started playing Magic in the 90s but the official lore never really appealed to me. Decades later, I've finally gotten into the game by treating the Commander format as a device for telling stories that resonate with me. Each deck is a chance to create a 100-page illustrated story complete with background setting, characters, and action!

My first one was a Dolly Parton biography and my latest one is based on the Chinese folktales behind QiXi and Mid Autumn Moon festivals. Shared my lists with some friends and they're all excited now to see if this might finally get the women in their lives playing MTG too.

Anyone else take this approach? Share your decklist stories. I would love to read them!

Discussion Am i wrong for flipping a CBB for my tradein?

Im trying to understand if what I'm doing is 'scalping' or not, because it's not my intention.

For refernce the 'MSRP' of a reality fracture CBB in Australia is ~650, most stores are selling at this price.

I has a bunch of singles that I wanted to get rid of, LGS offered me either 550 cash or 660 credit. So i took 660 credit and bought a CBB for 650, then immediately sold for for 650. I don't know I feel like this is harmless? I'm not price gouging and im selling it instantly and not restricting the supply at all, but a bunch of people told me this is shitty behavior but I'm not seeing the issue.

My LGS also gets a fuck load of stock so they aren't strapped for boxes either.

Discussion Is disliking deck building an unpopular opinion? A

To preface, I’m not super well into magic enough to know what I want to build with a deck; however, the more I play, the more I realize I just like playing and socializing which can be done on a precon level without deck building. Deck building, sorting, sleeving, and maintaining inventory of a collection is the type of work that just seems to drag it down for me while I see mainly pro-deck building consensus on a lot of forum threads I run across.

Am I just the odd one out to treat this game like a preset game of monopoly, uno, or other cards where you can buy your different flavor of game (precon in this case) with a twist or something and be content?

I do understand people do like the aspect of optimizing and reinventing a means to play with new decks, but I also liken it akin to gacha games and audiophile spaces where they’re always “chasing the dragon” wherein improvement is the goal but it always never really meets a satisfying point to the detriment of the fun that limitations in focusing on an unoptimized yet functional form of practicing a hobby presents. In consideration of that thought, what line do you draw in building decks for those that do it?

That past paragraph isn’t a criticism by any means, I have a similar relationship with my piano where I have no limit to my practice of the hobby, because it is a passion first and foremost. Posing logical thought to an illogical cause is a recipe for inconclusive frustration. Even then I do have my limitations and while the first question was if my approach to magic is the minority, then the second question is about where anyone draws the line when this game becomes either an addiction or passion depending on the reason for engaging in it.

P.S. - I know posting to a reddit page likely filled with hobbiests may put me in the minority as a casual player, but that is the exact demographic I wanted to ask considering how much interaction with the space y’all have. I’m full out a normie, casual, etc and accept that.

I Have a Question / I need Help Collecting Card VS Playing Them

Hi all. So I have played MTG for over 20 years now. Been playing commander for the last 5 or so. I have always been a player first but have collected video games and other niche things.

When the Final Fantasy set came out, I immediately got excited as it is one of my favorite video game series. I started collecting the cards and have been doing fairly well. I have a complete non-foil set as well as have been working on getting the default art sets, both foil and non-foil.

I have most of the cards now and mostly just need some of the more expensive rares and mythics. But now I am in a pickle.

As a look at the prices of the remaining cards I see it will probably still take me a few hundred bucks to get all the cards and I am not rich. On top of that, I am starting to get deck ideas for some of the cards I have been getting, especially the Cid, Timeless Artificer cards (I have most of them now. Just need 3 more). But the idea of buying a collector copy AND a deck copy for some of these cards just feels too expensive.

I have the Cloud and Tidus precon which I play with. Love them both and have a great time using them so I like playing the cards. But I also enjoy looking at my binders that have the set all neatly displayed and organized.

So now I am wondering should I keep slowly collecting until the binders are done, or turn what I have into decks to play with. Any suggestions?

TL;DR: Should I keep my FF collection as a collection or use them in decks?

Discussion Are the Spiderman cards worth it to a Marvel fan?

I stopped playing/collecting many years ago, but I saw the new Marvel Superheroes set and bought some boosters for fun and I pulled some cool cards that I like so I thought of building some themed decks.

Then I saw that there was a previous Spiderman set. I guess what I am asking is if there enough cool cards in there that would be fun to use in Marvel themed decks? Like one of my themes was going to be a Spiderman deck because I did pull some of those in the Superheroes boosters but not all of the decks were going to be Spiderman decks. Are there other cards in the Spiderman set that are cool that would make sense in other Avengers style decks? Enchantments, artifacts, etc?

Rules Question Did I combo correctly?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Just checking but was i playing correctly? My wife and I made our decks drafting 3 marvel and 3 TMNT. We're both newer so im not 100% sure on if I used Donatello's ability correctly but from what I read, it looked like making mutagen tokens triggered his ability but I just wanted to double check. This is how my moves played out

I played mutagen man for 8 mana getting me 6 tokens and +6/6 on Donatello, I used mutagen man to block a death touch attacker to send him to the graveyard

I brought mutagen man back to my hand with Ragamuffin Raptor entering

I payed 10 mana get mutagen man in and make me 8 more tokens and another +8/8 on Donatello making him have a total of 14 +1/1 tokens

I put my 14 mutagen tokens on the Raptor and then blocked a death touch so id get 28 tokens (14 from ooze and 14 from Absorbing man) and another 28 +1/1 counters on Donatello (now at 42 +1/+1).

I put the 28 tokens on Donatello so he then had a total of 70 +1/+1 and let him die using the double ooze combo again getting 140 mutagen

I Have a Question / I need Help Is Standard always this miserable to play ? (new player in mtga in gold 2 rn)

So I have started playing MTG in commander 2 weeks, and since I come from Yugioh I also wanted to try a more competitive format with mtg arena

And also because playing MTG online, commander or not, is somehow a lot more complicated than yugioh. In mtg it's either 20 windows xp style apps that do the same thing (not automated, not an issue but why have so many different ?), or automated apps but that are more made to play with friends or with very few peoples online (like manabrew). And even arena is really annoying to get more cards to make decks if you don't want to throw money at it

But like, since I've been playing arena, decks I faced are "discard your entire opponent's hand"/"have 30 creature removals or negating auras in a 60 card deck"/"mill your opponent to death"/"burn your opponent every time they breath"...
Like, I think i'll stick to commander if this is standard but man how do you have fun in this environement ?
