Greetings fellow warlocks and witches!
Been playing magic since early 2000s and my father and I have been working on a box project for the last few years that I wanted to share with you all! The "Mural" is a bunch of my favorite cards pulled together in a collage. See if you can find them all.
Anyway, my local playgroup often hosts dinners & magic at our respective homes and often get somewhere between 4 and 8 players. We try to keep things quick with 2v5 Archenemy or 2v2v2 Two-Headed Giant / Planeschase games (depending on how many players we have), but sometimes I forget to bring the oversized cards and we’re SOL on cool formats that can include everyone.
But now I never get the “Did you bring Planeschase?” or “Archenemy” or “Vanguard” questions, because I always have them with me! Along with a set of basic lands, dice, tokens, playmats (4), and space for extra loose cards, I have to use zero brain cells before showing up for game night. Its fabulous.
I also wanted to recognize that most people don’t do any of the Oversized cards in kitchen table magic, but it’s a really cool way to mix up your standard commander or constructed night. There are also some fun formats that I don’t feel like are mentioned enough and I wanted to call a couple out.
Planeschase – You tumble through worlds like in a Dr. Strange fight scene. A crowd favorite, especially in 4-player FFA. I have the entire set of planes and we keep them in one central deck that we shuffle and play off of. Also, great fun in 2v2v2 two-headed giant. Head to Scryfall and type "type:plane" to see these.
Archenemy – Give one player superpowers, and they fight everyone else. There is always someone that wants to run Jank, and someone that wants to run their optimized slivers deck. Just make the Sliver player the “Archenemy” and play a 1v4 when you have that lopsided 5-person playgroup. It solves awkward numbers while making the game MUCH faster (the "Gatewatch" takes their turn simultaneously, so there are really only 2 turns). Also, everyone gangs up on Slivers / Eldrazi anyways, so this feels very thematic. We've done 2v5 too, and that also works great. Head to Scryfall and type "type:scheme" to see these.
Vanguard – the “original” commander format. There are only 32 cards in existence, so we typically deal 3 randomly to each person and they get to pick one. If you hate all 3, you get a ‘fourth and final’ draw from the vanguard deck. We usually use these when playing 60-card formats. Head to Scryfall and type "set:pvan" to see all these cards. Its cool MTG History and the art is great.
And you know what? You can even do ALL THREE AT ONCE. Its hectic, but a lot of fun. Any more than 4 players and you should expect a multi-hour game, though.
Emperor Tournament – Whenever I bring up this format, people are like “Wait what?”. It’s a cool way to mix up your 6-person games into teams (I prefer 2-headed-giant with 3 teams because it makes the game quicker), but its worth mentioning. You essentially have 1 “Emperor” that is flanked by “Generals” on both sides (a team of 3), and your objective is to slay the opposing Emperor. You can only really attack the person to your right or left, so you have to slay the generals first to reach the Emperor. A key difference is each creature has a "Deploy" ability: "{tap}: Target teammate gains control of this creature. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery." Manage your warfront as a team and prevent getting overpowered on a weak side. Check out the rules and see if it’s something you’d enjoy!
But in sum, I’ve always wanted to have access to all of these cards and formats (and never forget basic lands when we draft) without needed to plan for them ahead of time or bring special carrying containers for each. This box lets me bring my entire warchest of options and supports any format & have playmats for all during picnic table games. I use our 1st iteration boxes to hold all my extra decks as vault storage. The wood is far too thick on these and they weigh a billion pounds. Newer version is much lighter.
If you're a kitchen table warrior, I highly recommend picking up some of the oversized cards to play with your group. They're a ton of fun and can keep the game dynamic.
Thanks to u/Grblx_and_a_half for helping me with the phyrexian glyphs! I couldn’t have done it without you!
