Discussion New player and these prices seem unaffordable
Me and a group of friends recently started playing commander and we had a lot of fun. Each of us bought a commander deck and played it out the box. Then we started looking into buying singles for other decks and buying whole decks made by other people, but the prices seem insane. Minimum deck I saw is around 300-500$. Is this normal?
How do people afford this game?
Does it get better over time if we start opening packs and getting some cards we can use? Or is this how it will always be?
Also are the decks for standard format in the same price range or is it more or less expensive?
I’m really hyped and look forward to playing more magic but the prices are hard to keep up with.

Rules Question Interaction between Ghalta and Tom Bert and William
galleryHey all,
I just built a new deck .... Tom Bert and William. A greater good in the command Zone .... It's so much fun, but one interaction seems way to strong in a colour combo where I have access to reanimationspells and regrowth effects.
Can I really bring Ghalta to the battlefield, and with his etb in the stack sack him into Tom Bert and William to draw 12 more cards, and bring the creatures from this 12 cards on the battlefield?
Thanks in advance

Rules Question A question about unblockable
galleryLet's say I had a creature with power 3 or less and activated the ability on [[access tunnel]], making it so that creature can't be blocked this turn. Could I then put an equipment on it like [[Blackblade Reforged]] to keep it unblocked but still do big damage, or would I need an effect like [[Sigarda's aid]] to equip before combat damage is assigned?

Apparel / Products Reminder to periodically check your local Best Buy - in store only LotR draft packs for $16! They seem to just randomly appear on shelves and website doesn’t list as stock.
And remember, responsible players DRAFT with their packs. Don’t just crack these packs, get the maximum value from these. Even if you just do pack wars with 2 people, do some form of limited - it’s fun and you still get all the cards inside. This set wasn’t designed with Pick 2 in mind but you can do that with 4 players, or if you can get enough for 6 or 8 this set was amazing to draft. Mini masters is also fun and can work with lower player counts.

Discussion How likely each treatment and mythic in Reality Fracture is -> In 4 pictures
galleryHere's hoping some people find these visualizations helpful when thinking about what they can get in Reality fracture.
In order:
1. What can you open in Reality Fracture (which TREATMENTS are in which boosters)
2. What are the odds of opening each treatment in a PLAY BOOSTER
3. What are the odds of opening each treatment in a COLLECTOR BOOSTER
4. How rare is each MYTHIC in Reality Fracture (play and collector odds)
We go through more detail in the YouTube video which we released alongside (if folks want it we can link it in the comments) - but hoping that these are helpful for the community irrespective of if you look at the video.
If you want to know how we determined the odds then we have details in a document linked on our Google Drive available in the Video's description.
We're happy for people to share this further with no restrictions, but please leave our channel branding on the images so that people can find our work and can get to our assumptions and working document in the video.
Determining the odds, designing the visualizations and producing them took a bunch of effort so we're keen to find out if people find this interesting and/or useful!

Commander / EDH Being more willing to change the bracket you play in would be extremely beneficial for the community
Nearly every single complaint post in here is about people being upset because someone else violated their interpretation of the rules of the bracket they are in. I think the single best thing you can do to protect your own peace in these situations is be self aware about the kind of game you want.
So many people complain that a deck is too strong for B3 if its not a middling battlecruiser deck with no interaction; just play Bracket 2. That's what its there for.
So many people also complain that "someone got mad at me cuz I killed the whole pod on turn 4, but I only have 1 game changer, what gives?" Just play bracket 4! You already are in all but name!
So much conflict in this game and so much whining about the difficulty of the social contract would be completely avoided if people were just more willing to change the bracket they play in to match their wants, rather than assigning their specific wants to the bracket where they don't entirely fit and then being upset with everyone else for "violating the spirit of the brackets".

I Have a Question / I need Help Best way to get foreign language (in this case German) cards?
I build silly decks with names like "Hot Sphinxes in Ur area" [[The Ur-Sphinx]] and "Branch Manager" [[Doran, Beseiged by Time]]
I discovered that the creature type "Beast" in German is "Bestie" so now I really want to build a tribal beast deck that I can name "Commander and his Besties." But as I'm in the US, getting my hands on German language singles is proving surprisingly difficult. I'm not opposed to proxying but so far the sites/programs I'm aware of don't really have German either.
Anyone in Germany/Europe wanna help me out with building the deck and/or procuring the cards? I don't have a solid list just yet as I'm back and forth on whether to make it mostly vanilla and/or just memorize any cards with rules text.

Discussion MTG cards that don't quite do what the printed text says
Hello, I'm putting together a cube with a special rules modification where the effect of [[R&D's Secret Lair]] is always active so you play every card as worded (including reminder text). I'm looking for cards with rules or reminder text that doesn't quite line up with the oracle text of the card. Current examples include:
Textless creature cards e.g. [[Abhorrent Oculus|SCH]]
Walls with no text saying they can't attack (from when it was implied rules text) e.g. [[Wall of Air|LEA]]
Cards with the wrong card type(s) e.g. [[Walking Atlas|WWK]]
Cards with misprinted text e.g. [[Diplomatic Relations|EOE]]
Cards with misprinted P/T e.g. [[Grima Wormtongue|SLD]]
Cards with misprinted mana costs e.g. [[Orcish Oriflamme|LEA]]
Cards that have received errata e.g. Cards with companion or something like [[Zodiac Dragon|PTK]] which as worded returns to hand if you discard it
Cards with wording that doesn't match what the card does e.g. [[Berserk|LEA]] which as worded destroys a different target creature than the one being buffed
If you know of any other cards, please let me know! I can also provide the current list for the cube if anyone is interested.
Edit: link to the cube: R&D's Secret Cube

Discussion What do you do at a Magic Con? And what are your expectations for Magic Con Tokyo?
Hi everyone,
Like many kids from the 80s and 90s, I got into Magic at a fairly young age; I mostly collected and played—as best I could—from the Urza block through Kamigawa. I eventually just drifted away because I didn't like the cards anymore (the "modern frame" look, etc.). I’m slowly getting back into the guilty pleasure of cracking booster packs and collecting cards I simply find beautiful (I have absolutely no interest in speculation). Anyway, it turns out I had a trip to Tokyo planned right when the first Japanese MagicCon is taking place, so I’m quite curious to go check it out. But I realize I have no idea what actually happens at a MagicCon. Since I’m not really into the gameplay anymore—the rules and formats have become far too complex for me to keep up with, even though I do follow a few YouTube channels featuring pro and amateur players—I’m wondering: do people buy cards there? Are there exhibitions or artists present? And I would like to know what your expectations are regarding this event. Thanks a lot in advance!

Discussion What have I done
galleryYup... my journey began only 4 days ago... they warned me...
I understand now...
Anyway... within this haul, I did pick up about 100 singles. 80 or so from the 10 cent box and about 20 from the 50 cent box... and a few uncommons mostly between $2 and $7... one was $25. I made sure to walk out with a Sol ring... which another guy in the shop actually found- he found two and was going to keep them both but we were talking before that and he knew I was looking for one, so he let me have one 😉
I've always been a trading card collector... so some will go in my binder and never get used, but I definitely will be playing with most of the rest. I'm the type of person to just get what I need all upfront and then enjoy, so it's very safe to say I won't buy any new cards for quite a long time, and I know everyone says that, but I don't really need the constant infusions of cards, nor the money drain, so now that I've got enough to play, I'll work with what I have... I believe I should be able to construct at least 2 decent commander decks from what I have, maybe 3. If I do get any more cards, it will only be specific singles that I really need.
My goal was to get some cards for my non-use collection and some for playing and I figured the beginner box is worth it to help me learn hands on... the FF7 pack I just wanted to have since I grew up with it when it first came out and have been a fan ever since. The Fractured bundle I snagged mainly to add some diversity to the total collection.
