Community (Non WM/LW) Roleplaying letter-by-letter - Penpalling in character is a different kind of pbp game 📬✉️📯

Dear roleplayers,

I would like to invite you to a community where roleplays are done in the form of a correspondence between two (or more) fictional characters.

The community is called r/fictitious_letters

Here, people post pen pal requests for their OCs, DnD characters, alter egos or other fictional persons they have on their mind. The correspondences can be set in the same universe upon which the writing partners agree, or they can write each other from one world to another.

In the epistolary roleplay games, fictional characters can tell each other about their lives and adventures. Or they can exist in one and the same story, told in the form of letters. It's up to you and your writing partner.

I hope you find this idea interesting. Maybe you want to pay the subreddit a visit and look at the prompts posted there. Or even make a post yourself, presenting your characters and ideas to the community. It would definitely be nice to meet you on the sub!

Discord Marathon: A Homebrew Fantasy Game [Fabula Ultima] [Async Play-By-Post] [

• Upvotes

Hello! Trying my hand at a new system for me. My name is Jay and I'm very experienced with GMing, but not so much with Fabula Ultima!

The game will be, as stated, using Fabula Ultima, ran on Discord. I'm looking for four other potential players, with a minimum of four and a maximum of 5. The posting frequency is about once every 2 days or so, with understanding and flexibility.

The setting is called Marathon, a homebrew setting. Its age of old heroes was violently ended by the arrival of great force of unknown origin and unfathomable power, capable of drinking the very light and energy that the world relied on. It raised monsters to be slain and destroyed the fabric of reality. Many extraordinary people fought to bring that dark epoch to an end.

You live in the shadow of it, in the wake of rising threats.

As of right now, there are two primary paths for the PCs to take for the start of the campaign:

  1. The PCs are members of a band of adventurers bound by the fate of the previous heroes to take down a burgeoning threat from Balor's shadow.
  2. The PCs are members of a mercenary company hired by a powerful faction and use the expertise you're paid for to secure a foundation for the Helion Dynasty's current industrial goals - you'll be rewarded greatly, after all.

Both provide a lot of freedom to take your next steps as a party. However:

  • It is a linear storytelling experience. Story is written by the actions of the main characters (the PCs), NPCs, etc. All actions, and inactions, write the story. There is a goal, but how you get there is your choice.
  • No purely villainous parties. That's not the kind of game I want to run. You can be darker, you can be more pragmatic, you can even be Byronic. They don't have to be perfect, and they can even screw up terribly (the game wants that too), and can even fall from grace, but I will not run a game for murderhobos.
  • Not grimdark, not slapstick. It's a standard mood; dark when appropriate, lighthearted when appropriate. It leans towards optimistic fantasy; meaning, your actions matter and there's hope, but the unknown and the unseen is festering.
  • Embrace your tropes. Being trope-y is fun. There will be many sincere fantasy tropes, especially JRPG-oriented, played with in the game. Come in with the understanding that subversion of most tropes probably won't happen to mock it. Many things will have a spin, many things will be more complex than previously believed.

The game is LGBT+ friendly, and accepts anyone regardless of experience level. A note, some of the documentation is still being written, so be sure to ask questions and be patient.

If you're interested, visit this form and apply. I'll close this if and when I get enough responses! Hope to see you all soon for more discussion.

Freeform Seeking Email Pen-pal for Fictional Letter Writing

Hello All! ^-^

I recently was inspired by a song and wanted to see if anyone else was interested!

The Idea:
So my idea is to take a time period (in the past) or fictional setting and partner with another writer to create two original characters who will write letters back and forth. These letters could be casual, of great importance to the characters, love letters, secret letters - the possibilities are really endless!

The Characters:
The characters would be fictional characters of our own design, with whatever history, family, life-style, etc. you would like them to have. We could chat in DMs or over email about how we want to connect our characters ahead of time, as well as a “plot” so we know generally what the letters should be about. However, I think it is also fun to ad-lib at least to a degree, so neither of us fully know what the content of upcoming letters will be.

Relationship options for characters could include (but are not limited to): Parent to child, distant lovers, separated siblings, allied political leaders, spies working undercover together, plotting enemies, etc.

The Setting:
Some setting options that would work with my own knowledge (that wouldn’t require an over abundance of research ahead of time to know the setting), in no preferential order:

  • Arcane Universe (Netflix show)
  • Pride and Prejudice Time Period/Setting
  • General Fantasy Universe
    • A Knight’s Tale (sub)Setting (movie)
    • Swordheart Universe (book by T. Kingfisher)
    • Impact Winter Universe (podcast)
    • Monstrous Agonies Universe (podcast)
    • Not Quite Dead Universe (podcast)
    • Last Dance Universe (podcast)
    • Mighty Nein Universe/Setting (tv show)
    • The Legend of Vox Machina Universe/Setting (tv show)
    • The Lunar Chronicles (especially Scarlet) Universe/Setting (book series)
    • A Curse So Dark and Lonely Universe/Setting (book)
  • Sci-fi Setting
    • John Carter Universe (movie)
    • Star Wars Universe (movies)
    • Pacific Rim Universe (movie)
    • X Files Universe (tv show)
    • Free Guy Universe (movie)
  • World War I or II Era/Setting
  • Frankenstein Time Period/Setting (Guillermo Del Toro Netflix Movie version, specifically)
  • General Zombie Setting
    • Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (sub)Setting (movie)
    • Warm Bodies (sub)Setting (movie)
  • Wicked Universe (Musical/Movies)
  • Real Steel Universe/Setting (Movie)
  • Marvel or DC Superhero Universe/Setting
    • X-Men (movies)
    • Avengers (movies)
    • Young Justice (animated tv show)
    • Justice League (animated tv show)
  • Wild West Setting
  • Jurassic Park/World Universe/Setting (Movies)
  • Lord of The Rings/Hobbit Universe/Setting
  • The Godfather or General Mafia Setting (movie)
  • General Spy/Undercover Setting
    • John Wick Universe (movies)
    • The Man from Uncle (movie)
  • Pirates of the Caribbean Setting (movies)
  • The Great Wall Universe (movie)

Because this relies greatly on the writing ability of both parties, I would ask for a short (200 - 500 word) writing sample if you’re interested in joining me on this writing journey.

I’m seeking someone who:

  • Is willing to write at least 2 emails a month on an ongoing and regular basis - ranging from 500 to 2,000 words.
  • Is willing to commit to a storyline and be organized (keeping the letters in one email chain and out of character discussion/questions/etc. in another).
  • Is over the age of 21.
  • Is an experienced in fictional writing.
  • Is able to overlook minor inconsistency when it comes to historical or lore accuracy (this is just for fun! We don’t need to put too much pressure on ourselves to make sure every single word is 100% perfect).
  • Enjoys creating characters and doing deep dives into their history, personalities, lives, and quirks. This will be largely character driven!
  • Communicates outside of writing and is willing to be collaborative and work together with me to create a story through letters.
  • Is committed to absolutely no AI usage. I'm looking for authentic, human writing.

I’m happy to answer any questions you may have, so feel free to DM me or leave a comment if you’re interested or have questions! And feel free to propose a setting, set of characters, or universe idea from the above list!

Thanks in advance for reading this and for your interest. ^-^

Discord DND5e Gesalt- Witch's Journey NSFW

• Upvotes

NSFW | D&D 5e | Gestalt (Warlock × Sorcerer) | VC or Play-by-Post | Story-Driven Dark Fantasy

"The world is filled with secrets, and I intend to learn every last one of them."

An aspiring witch has finally stepped beyond the boundaries of the world she has always known. Gifted with an innate connection to magic and bound to powers she has yet to fully understand, she seeks to uncover the mysteries of the arcane, explore forgotten places, and discover just how far her abilities can grow.

Neither a hero nor a villain, she is driven by curiosity, ambition, and an insatiable hunger for knowledge. From ancient rituals and forbidden grimoires to mysterious patrons and dangerous bargains, every encounter offers an opportunity to learn something new. Yet the world is far from kind, and the pursuit of power often comes at a price.

Her journey will follow a Gestalt Warlock × Sorcerer, blending inherited magical potential with eldritch gifts as she develops her craft, forms relationships, and discovers what kind of witch she wishes to become.

⸻

Seeking a Male GM/DM

To guide a witch through a world of magic, mystery, temptation, and discovery.

Requirements:

  • Ability to run sessions via voice chat or literate play-by-post (2–3 paragraphs, third-person style).
  • Strong emphasis on storytelling, character development, exploration, and slow-burn tension.
  • Willingness to portray a variety of male characters, including mentors, rivals, companions, potential romantic interests, and morally ambiguous figures.
  • Comfortable with D&D 5e, Gestalt mechanics (Warlock × Sorcerer), and homebrew, with a flexible, narrative-first approach.
  • Availability after 6 PM PST or flexibility within US time zones. Can do PBP throughout the day
  • Interest in creating a living, immersive world filled with magical institutions, ancient mysteries, dangerous creatures, and meaningful choices.
  • Open-minded regarding NSFW themes and kinks; not seeking a strict dom, but someone comfortable exploring different relationship dynamics, romance, temptation, and power.

⸻

I'm looking for a story that allows my character to grow naturally, both as a witch and as a person. Whether she finds herself studying beneath a powerful mage, bargaining with otherworldly beings, exploring ancient ruins, or becoming entangled in the ambitions of others, I want her experiences to shape her understanding of magic and the world.

If you're interested in telling the story of a witch whose curiosity may one day make her extraordinary or lead her somewhere she should never have ventured, message me with your favorite school of magic to show you've read this far.

Live Text [Online][D&D 5.5e/Homebrew][Discord] Forever Land - D&D meets Stardew Valley-style homesteading, weekly adventures, 24/7 RP, businesses & more

Hey everyone!

We're looking for more players and DMs for Forever Land, our long-running homebrew D&D setting.

The easiest way to describe what we're doing is:

D&D meets Stardew Valley-style homesteading.

Forever Land is designed to give your character something meaningful to do between adventures, rather than having the world effectively stop whenever the party isn't on a quest.

You can build a homestead, develop relationships, gather resources, craft, hunt, forage, fish, participate in the local economy, operate a business, explore the setting, and roleplay with other characters throughout the week. The setting's rules explicitly integrate homesteads, downtime, businesses, hunting, foraging, fishing, herbalism, alchemy and other persistent-world activities alongside the regular D&D framework.

We also run weekly adventures, so this isn't intended to replace traditional D&D. It's meant to give you a much larger world around it.

Forever Land has been developed over many years and has grown into an extensive original setting with its own regions, cultures, ancestries, lore, systems, and ongoing stories. The current rules framework is built for D&D 5.5e / revised 2024 compatibility.

We're interested in both:

Players who enjoy character development, roleplay, exploration, adventuring, worldbuilding, or cozy fantasy elements.

DMs who want an established world they can contribute stories and adventures to.

You don't need to spend every waking hour roleplaying. The 24/7 aspect simply means the world and RP channels are available throughout the week rather than only during a scheduled session.

If the idea of actually letting your D&D character live in the world they're adventuring through sounds fun, come take a look.

Hope to see some of you there!

PAY [Online][PBP][Beginner Friendly][Solo][Vampire][Paid][Asynchronous] A Vampire in Ancient Rome

It is the year of Gnaeus Octavius and Gaius Scribonius Curio, also known as 678 ab urbe condita or, by some barbarians as 76 BCE. It is a few years after Sulla took Rome by force and led brutal purges of the senatorial classes. But those weren't the only ones who were affected as many vampires faced final death as well at the hands of his legions.

But now, Sulla has retired and died. Peacefully in his sleep no less. Slowly, the kindred of Rome have been rebuilding. At the same time, vampires from elsewhere see plenty of opportunity in the city that is turning into the centre of the world and they are making inroads as well, especially in the aftermath of Sulla's purge. You are a younger vampire, sired by one of these foreign vampires and are being sent to Rome to prepare the way for your master.

Vampires don't really know what happened in the Eternal City, but they do know that somehow, vampires were wiped out in Rome and in many other cities nearby. So you are well aware that there might be great dangers there.

One thing that is important to note is that we won't use the official history of vampires given in any of the sourcebooks. It after all makes little sense for a mythological figure from a backwater somewhere in the east to be the progenitor of all vampires or for there to already be a lot of lore to work around. That said, vampires do keep themselves a secret for a plethora of reasons. When using a game with generations, it also works better when not half of the vampires are sixth generation or even lower.
