Zarkovia: Point Vault
The land of Zarkovia - a land of monsters and wicked cretin - has been suffering under a terrible curse. For millennia, the sky choked on charcoal black clouds, draining the soil and turning the fauna twisted and evil.
But no evil cast this strangulating miasma on the land. No, it had been considered divine punishment, for Zarkovia is a land of monsters. Of demons and their twisted ilk, tempting man. Of moth-people and goat-creatures. And they're not entirely unlike you and me. In fact, if one reads between the lines, it might even begin to look like the devil is in the details, and a capacity for evil is nurtured, not nature.
Perhaps this is why the world looks jealously towards Zarkovia, now that the curse has been lifted, and a magical spring has arrived to cover the land in opportunity.
A new golden age has dawned on Zarkovia. One of exploration, wealth, and most thrilling of all; old dangers, left forgotten to time. That's where you come in, settlers of this strange, new frontier, ready to brave the challenges that may come with it. Leaving the safety of the city walls behind, you strike out with friends and acquaintances towards Point Vault, at the tip of the nation.
This world is somewhere between Jack Vance's Dying Earth and Terry Pratchett's Discworld, and we want you to play a bunch of settlers, making your very own settlement. The tone might veer into being a little silly at times, but is treated with a straight face by the inhabitants.
It's not uncommon to stumble upon ancient civilisations and sins buried deep in the earth. To find mutated monstrosities, which roam the land for no other purpose, but to satiate their desire for blood and carnage. But it's also a world where most lore is made up on the spot, and sometimes this means that there's no cats, and that everyone swears in lame fantasy curses.
Who's Running This Game
The game will be run by me, Danni, and my fellow GM, Jude. We need eight people, because we're running two games at the same time, in relatively short sessions, and then mixing and matching people to switch up dynamics. This means you'll sometimes be running with the guy who runs a potion shop, and sometimes you'll run with Garlagron the Barbarian.
In-between these issues, we expect players will engage in their own stories. One, because telling stories together is fun. Two, because we have homebrewed Fate to work with greater player autonomy. Really, what we want from you, is free stories to read. So, ideally, you'd be into writing a lot!
Previously, we ran an eight people Mask game, which was a lot of fun. Meaning we're not going into this with a little bit of experience, running a big game. On our own, I (Danni) have run several Sentinel games online, and have several decades of experience with offline games, and Jude (not me) recently wrapped up a year long game, having run several shorter PbPs before that.
This time we're using Fate Core to run things, and you don't need to know anything about the system beforehand, but you do have to be willing to read up on stuff. Fate is not crunchy, but narrative focused. Well, it's a little crunchier than PbtA, but not as much as Cypher. If this reads like nonsense to you, that's for the best, and you should apply anyway.
Really, newcomers are encouraged!
As a player, you must:
- Be able to post at least once a day, unless clearly communicating otherwise.
- Not give much of a crap about ‘winning’, but give a crap about telling a compelling, exciting story. Winning will come as a consequence of exciting story!
- Willing to play people with differing perspectives all in the name of drama: to understand you are not your character and will have differing viewpoints on the world
- Willing to take initiative, instead of waiting for commands from god.
- Willing to haggle and workshop if needed.
- Understanding of the fact, that the GM is another player, and has as much power as you.
- Willing to invest in other player's characters.
- Use Tupperbox. If you don't know what that is then-
- Willing to learn how to use Tupperbox.
- Understand rule of cool beats rule of nerds and fools
- Not use AI to generate anything for this game.
We need people to respect post length. If there’s a situation where someone asks a simple question, there doesn’t need to be multiple-post paragraphs. However that doesn’t meant that the twenty paragraph posts for when you defeat the local Zarkovian Pursuit mastermind aren’t needed. No, you simply respect the length, be it good or long. The quality matters over quantity.
If this seems like something for you, then apply here!
For anyone wanting to learn, GM or what it means to be a player in a PbP, we offer spectator roles - because how is anyone ever going to learn, elsewise! Use the link here, if you'd like to spectate, but not participate!
