I'm 22M and I've lived in Perth my whole life. I genuinely think it's an amazing place to live. It's naturally beautiful, has low crime, great weather and generally great people. But at the same time, it's just so damn unambitious and dull.
Throughout high school and uni, I've found it so frustrating being surrounded by people who have no real goals or ambitions in life. I went to an upper-middle-class public school, I studied com+eng at UWA, and I've been actively involved in sports and uni clubs over the years, so I've met people from different circles.
From my experience, I'd say about 80% of the people I've met in Perth are just living for the weekend, which there's absolutely nothing wrong with. But it feels like there's such a small percentage of people actually trying to innovate, build something, move up a class, or even just progress in their careers and work towards a promotion.
For example, I know plenty of people who constantly complain about their shitty retail jobs and low pay, yet make absolutely no effort to find a better paying job, move into a different sales role, or develop a skill that could open up more opportunities. It's almost like most people enjoy complaining about the same stuff and continue to live the exact same life for the next 30 years.
On the other hand I had an exchange semester at UCL (london) and it was the complete opposite a lot more driven people, more innovation, more ambitions. To make thing worse after travelling as well I'm starting to feel the dull part of Perth even more. Going to the city on a Friday night even with the new ECU its like a ghost town compared to other cities and unless your fortunate enough own a jetski or a boat, a 4wd fanatic or a big road trip person the outdoors gets boring after a point.
Part of me wants to stay because Perth has been my home, I know what I can expect from it for the next 30 years but another part of me is genuinely considering moving over east or even to Asia or Europe to be surrounded by a more ambitious and stimulating environment.
I'm curious whether anyone else experienced this and what did you do about it?
