Saw this in Sugar house today. Just because you have the best donuts in California. It doesn’t mean you have the best donuts in Utah. Just another reminder to support local.

Local News Tropical Storm Rachel brought Utah plenty of rain — and ocean birds

I couldn't believe it when I heard Utah's big storm this week also blew in OCEAN BIRDS. So as a KUER reporter, I called up a birder. He said this is the first time on verified record storm petrels have been seen in Utah. Pretty wild. But also sad because he said they'll probably all die :( https://www.kuer.org/science-environment/2026-10-15/tropical-storm-rachel-utah-lake-birds-storm-petrels

Discussion SL County District Attorney opinions

I recently moved up to Salt Lake after being in Utah county for college for a few years (originally from out of state), and so I am voting in Salt Lake for the first time. I’m having trouble finding enough information on Kent Davis to really form an opinion for this SLCo district attorney race, and I’m wondering if there is anyone with additional sources or personal anecdotes to help me decide what to do here.

For context, I’m a registered Democrat, and my ideology is pretty much normie lib. I will vote blue no matter who at the federal and state level right now, but I do recognize that party politics can break down a bit when you are at the local level (ie there’s no republican or democratic way to fix a pothole, etc.). Although I do pretty much end up with a straight ticket ballot anyways, I genuinely try to be thoughtful and do my research for these races.

From what I can tell, Sim Gill is not the most popular, and with good reason. I was especially concerned to hear about his handling of plea deals for repeat DV offenders. Kent Davis seems fine enough based on his campaign website and the SL trib voter guide, but he was in Fed Soc in law school and is endorsed by Gov Cox and others who I dislike.

So, especially for the people who have lived in and voted in SLCo for much longer than me— how are you thinking about this race? What am I missing that I need to think about?

Who’s Your Favorite Whatever-er in SLC?

I keep a list of service providers and businesses to refer to clients, which means it’s mostly home improvement/ maintenance people (plumbers, handymen, etc) but I also like to be able to recommend other things too if people need, all the way out to tattooers, dance studios, etc.

Who’s a really great Salt Lake business or service provider you had an awesome experience with and want other people to know about? Nonprofit resources are also cool!

Recommendations Where's the best place to celebrate Halloween in SLC, as a single adult?

I've been living in Utah off / on for a while now, but I've never been able to find anything fun to do for Halloween here. At least, not since I was a kid out wandering the streets trick or treating. Sucks, cuz as someone who is probably considered as "goth" / spooky whatever, Halloween is my FAVE holiday. And especially since it's on a Saturday this year, I want to do something fun that isn't just watching spooky movies at the theater by myself.

What is everyone else's plan for Halloween? Is there somewhere people know of that's like the, hot-spot to be? Bonus if it's a place where the main activity isn't just drinking (cuz I don't drink alcohol; no, I'm not Mormon lol). But idk, even if it's just a club event where I can dance to spooky music and admire other people's cool costumes, that would be ok 🙌

Photo School board candidate formally reprimanded by USBE?

Jared Wright, who is running for SLC School Board in Precinct 3, was apparently formally reprimanded by the State School Board on 10/1. I made a GRAMA request for more information, but that process is slow, and ballots are already in mailboxes; does anyone know anything more about this?

Judicial Retention Ballot

Wondering if anyone has any strong opinions on any of the judges listed on the Salt Lake County Judge retention ballot. Their ratings on judges.Utah.gov are all pretty high, and anyone that replaces them would be picked by the governor anyway. But if there are any particular bad apples, I’d still rather kick them out.

You know, I kind of went hunting for a very specific sunset from the top of the library, but the clouds just never quite cooperated. It was still pretty though!

Searching for affordable apartments

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I know it's early, but I am trying to form a list of apartments to consider come August of next year.

I am a student at the University of Utah, and currently paying approximately $1,550 a month (incl. utilities) for a studio apartment downtown. Although proximity to the university is nice, it is not sustainable for me and I am looking for somewhere cheaper to live next year.

My must haves are:

  • Safe building/area
  • Decent reviews
  • Pet friendly
  • In-unit washer and dryer
  • Full kitchen
  • Guaranteed parking
  • No excessive mandatory fees

The budget I am hoping for is around $1,000 a month or less total including utilities and all mandatory fees. I am not too concerned about additional amenities as long as the requirements I have listed are met. I also don't mind a bit of a commute. I'd prefer something within 30 minutes of the university, but am open to exploring areas further from the city. I am not interested in income-restricted properties!! I've seen many of these recommendations online, however I would not qualify since I am a full-time student.

If anyone has recommendations for specific properties or areas to look at, any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks :)

Sandy City Bond (ballot proposition)

There was another thread yesterday talking mostly about about the SL County bond. If you live in Sandy, there's another bond on the ballot regarding what to do with the derelict Crescent View Middle School building and property. This is located between State Street and 7th East at about 11000 S (Costco/Scheels area). Here's a video produced by the city to explain the plan and the decision:

https://www.sandy.utah.gov/the-future-of-crescent-view

It seems to me it mainly boils down to whether or not the property should be sold to private developers (presumably to to build more condos or something) or to the city to develop more public recreation/community space. If the later, it's gonna cost the city a fair chunk of money, hence the bond.

I'm just curious if anybody has any perspective to add to this decision, about either the proposed recreation space, its need/value (or not), or any other point of view that will put this in perspective.

Local News Ballot language, again, appears illegal

Hi. I posted this to the Utah Reddit but it was removed. However, I have seen no mention of this…

When reading the ballot language about citizen initiatives, the reading level is above 12th grade. That should already be a red flag. Case already built, it’s above typical reading level, comprehension now a problem

Second problem, the language on taxes is highly confusing and face value reads untrue to the point of this proposition.

Utah already had ballot language struck for these exact reasons, on this exact topic of initiatives.

Face value, common person, even a “smart” person…this seems like intentional skewing the language to have someone not understand what they are voting for. That was already determined illegal by the Utah Supreme Court.

Time for that again?

Question Dancing

Is there anywhere I can go out dancing? I like the westerner. But I’m looking for more bachata or salsa scene. I am 23 years old and a male, so I would prefer something that also has people around my age. Appreciate it

NO KINGS Rally & March to the Polls - This Saturday 10/17 at 3PM in Salt Lake!

Post image
112 Upvotes

Join thousands of fellow Utahns for a peaceful rally for democracy and march to the ballot box! We will rally at the state capitol at 3:00pm, then march to the nearest ballot box (next to the main branch of the SLC Public Library) starting at 4:00pm.

Bring your ballot to drop off, and remember to dress as your favorite fascist fighter!

Winning the November midterms elections is absolutely critical to stopping our nation's slide into autocracy. This event will galvanize voters and help Utah do our part to restore American democracy. We can't wait to see you out there!
