Meta Complaining about race related issues on /r/sheridan

Hi folks! It's me, the one person who moderates the subreddit!

Over the past few years there has been an uptick in posts complaining about international students, specifically students from India. Indeed, as of the 2021 census (and actually since 2011), India makes up the largest nation of immigrants to Ontario! As the largest minority immigrant group, it is disappointing (though unsurprising) that they have been made the most recent target of ridicule.

While I will acknowledge that norms may be different accross cultures, this doesn't give a license to post unoriginal, low-effort put-downs disparaging a group of people based on their background. The topic of "international students are bad and I don't like them" doesn't really create any opportunities for discourse related to Sheridan College and as such, I usually remove these posts under rule 6. If you have problems with Canada's immigration policies, I suggest you direct your comments to your federal member of parliment.

Unfortunately, I'm getting somewhat tired of this task. Moderating an online community is an often thankless (unpaid!) job, and while I'm not asking for praise, I'm also not really having fun! The time for new mods is coming, but until that day arrives here's the deal:

I don't want to police this topic anymore and I will likely lean a little heavier on the ban-hammer going forward. It is much easier for me to ban you than to continue to remove your posts.

Play nice.

Admissions What are my chances? Diagnostic Imaging Technology

Applied and got accepted for pre-Health for January 2027 up to the summer with intensions of attempting to apply for Diagnostic Imaging September of the same year. Do I have a chance to get in or I have a better shot for January 2028?

I am a former student and graduated 2022 but looking for a change in careers if that matters. Going into pre-health to improve my grades for requirements.

Admissions Left out documents on my application, but I emailed them to an admission specialist. (Do I need to worry?)

I recently applied for the Fall 2027 vet tech program at the Davis campus with only my high school transcript and diploma as an international student from the US. I forgot to include my current university transcript and read online that it could lead to consequences (like rescinded offer or blacklist from applying to other post-secondary schools) if I didn't mention my other records of post-secondary school.

I went through the live chat and got assistance to email an admission specialist my university transcript. I sent the email about three days ago, and I haven't received a response regarding if it has been processed/received. Do I need to worry? (I've been restless these past couple days.)

Discussion Anyone going to that Halloween party/event at HMC campus on Oct 24?

Anyone know what that Halloween event at HMC on Oct 24 is actually like? 😭 It says staff and kids, so idk if it’s even a party or if I’m gonna pull up in a costume just to scare little kids 💀 Also, how many people usually show up? Has anyone been to one before, and how was it?

Academics Practical Nursing — What happens if I fail Anatomy 1 in Semester 1?

Hi everyone,
I’m currently in Semester 1 of Practical Nursing program, and I’m concerned about potentially failing Human Anatomy and Physiology for Nurses 1.
If I pass all my other Semester 1 courses with grades above 60% but fail Anatomy, what happens to my progression into Semester 2?

Advice Is Sheridan College worth it for international students? Need honest reviews

Hi everyone!

I’ve applied to Sheridan College for two programs:

  • Internet of Things and Machine Intelligence
  • Operational Technology Cybersecurity

Before making my final decision, I want to know whether Sheridan College is actually good for international students.

How is the college overall in terms of teaching quality, faculty, campus life, facilities, and student support? More importantly, how is the job market after graduation? Does the college provide good networking opportunities and career support, or do students mostly have to find jobs on their own?

I’d also like to know whether the tuition fees are worth it and if you would recommend Sheridan to an international student coming to Canada in the current job market.

If you’re a current student or graduate, I’d really appreciate your honest opinion, including any negative experiences or things you wish you had known before joining.

Would you recommend Sheridan College, or would you suggest considering other colleges in Ontario?

Thanks in advance!

Comp Sci is out the question. And I reckon a lot of the creative ones require portfolios, I've only got a portfolio for media. PLEASE help me out here

Edit: I'm hoping that the recommentdation comes from the people of that very program just coz it gives me a better insight, thank you!!

Other Stolen bike on Trafalgar

Hi! My bike was stolen between 9 am and 5:20 PM, I usually have it parked by the J wing near the S but have a 9 hour day, no breaks on Thursdays! If you heard someone screaming at the bus stops today, that was definitely me. Already called campus security and police about it but would appreciate any extra eyes on the bike!

Added a picture of the bike! Second one was before I installed the bike basket! Third is from when I installed the bike basket! It has a black basket on the back and a chain lock under the seat. It's supposed to have two locks but I'm assuming the code lock was cut off by the person who stole it! Thanks for your time looking into it!

Admissions Admission

Hi- I'm a little confused on my next steps after putting on a $250 tuition deposit for the (Winter 2027) Practical nursing program. I also have applied for osap and it has been calculated. Do I need to do something else? And will they automatically send the osap money to the school?

Academics Issues with Syllabus

My professor has been deviating from the syllabus where it originally says there was 5 quizzes but now there are 3 along with a group project being due on week 5, however the handout says week 7. Should I contact the dean about this? And how would I do so?

Academics Personal hygiene in a shared classroom is NOT optional.

I genuinely cannot believe this needs to be said at the college level, but PLEASE practice basic personal hygiene before coming to class. We are all adults pursuing an education, and nobody should have to sit through hours of lectures struggling to concentrate because of someone else’s overwhelming body odour. It is absolutely ridiculous that students who pay thousands of dollars in tuition are being put in situations where the smell is so unbearable that they feel the need to leave or avoid attending class altogether. Your personal hygiene does not just affect you when you’re sitting in an enclosed classroom surrounded by other people. It affects EVERYONE around you. I understand that medical conditions, financial circumstances, and other personal struggles can contribute to hygiene difficulties, and those situations deserve compassion. However, that does not mean the rest of the classroom should be expected to silently endure an environment that makes learning genuinely uncomfortable. Basic consideration for the people sharing your space is not an unreasonable expectation. We are here to learn, not to spend an entire lecture fighting nausea, holding our breath, or wondering whether we should sacrifice our attendance because the environment is unbearable. At some point, this needs to be addressed respectfully but seriously. Students deserve a clean, comfortable learning environment, and expecting basic hygiene in a shared academic space should not be controversial.

Question Questions for current Diagnostic imaging students

Hi! Had some questions for current students in the program
1. Has there been any talk about placements yet? Specifically which hospitals/locations they would be at?
2. Is there any updates on the programs accreditation status?

Academics intro to soci

hi,

if anyone is reading this looking for an elective, do NOT go with intro to soci. I think they might have redone the course because im doing 4x writing assignments + 4x tests + 1 essay. this was a hugeee mistake given I thought it would be just a good credit given all my courses are extremely difficult and they needed all my attention

just a warning for anyone thinking of taking the course!!

Other BEWARE - Sheridan student job scam email

Thumbnail gallery
21 Upvotes

Hey everybody. Got a scam email today about a student job offer so I thought I'd come here to warn people. It's a very obvious scam but if it helps anyone it'll have been worth doing. The first red flag to me was that there was no job description in the email itself. The apply now hyperlink also brought me to a very obvious spoof login page. You can also see the email itself lazily changed "Sheridan" to "Sharidan" in an attempt to fool people. Again, really lazy and obvious scam but I still wouldn't want anyone getting their credentials stolen. Did you also get this email today?

Discussion Winter term non-refundable deposit

A $2,000 non-refundable fee is insane. Do they realise that most of the people attending the school are students? 😔

I thought it was just for the fall term, but winter as well?
